Yankees Place Miguel Andujar On 10-Day IL

By Jeff Todd | May 13, 2019 at 4:37pm CDT

The Yankees have placed third baseman Miguel Andujar back on the 10-day injured list, per a club announcement. Lefty Nestor Cortes Jr. was summoned back from Triple-A to take the open roster spot.

Andujar previously suffered a right labrum tear that seemingly threatened to end his season. Surgery wasn’t the first option, however, and Andujar seemed to emerge from a month-long rehab stint in good form.

Unfortunately, the joint has evidently not responded as hoped since Andujar was activated. In nine games this month, he’s hitting just .088/.114/.088.

It isn’t entirely clear at this point what the next steps might be. Andujar could try again to rest and rehab, but it stands to reason that the surgical option will also be revisited.

The Pirates feel your pain. I think that we have more players on the DL/IL than the Yanks.

I think the quantity is close. Pirates seem to have 12 or so from what I can tell while yankees had 14 I think at the most. Hard to contend with the quality of guys yankees had injured though.

Don’t think a 10 day IL stint is going to be enough for what ails Andujar.

its a preliminary placement. if they think the recovery will take 60 or more days theyll move him to the 60 day IL but not until they do more tests/assessments

Have the surgery, Miggy. See you in 2020. Gio is the star now. Kid is a stud in every sense of the word. Hitting like Judge at 3rd.

Let’s see what Urshela’s stats are by season’s end. This is a journey man fringe player that has had a hot start in a small sample size. Let’s not rush to judgment suggesting he may be the second coming of Mike Schmidt.

Just get the damn surgery already! The longer they wait the more they rescue him even being out for the beginning of next season. It’s obvious he needs the surgery.

Yeah but now its gonna be harder to package him in a trade which is what the Yankees were thinking with Urshela coming into own.

Are you serious? The Yankees never made intentions to trade Andujar. If they wanted to trade Andujar they wouldve done it last offseason. Bringing in Urshela, as good as he has played, doesnt give reason to believe that the Yankees had intentions of trading Andujar. They pick up a lot of minor leaguers. Do you think them picking up Tauchman meant they were looking to trade Frazier?

No but the difference here is they think Urshela is the real deal and he has the defensive abilty the Yankees covet at third base. This would make Andujar expendable in a trade for what the Yanks need to put them over the top: one more top flight starter.

No one knows if Urshela is the real deal yet. Not even the Yankees. So far its been a good but small sample size concerning his offensive numbers. Do you also think the Yankees think Maybin is legit because he is doing alright? Should we just drop Stanton now or?

Agreed. Yanks are enjoying what they got at third and Cashman is probably evaluating what he has and what others have to offer. As a Sox fan, I love how he tries to stay one step ahead. He gets the credit but those employees in the back that put the players on his radar deserve credit too.

Do you really think Urshela is suddenly coming into his own? He has 91 at bats and has a .392 on babip. I’m taking all bets on this continuing I’ll play the fade here especially looking at his past.

Same injury happened to the Brewers Jimmy Nelson in 2017 and is still not back. I know he is a pitcher so the timetable is longer but this is a serious injury. He needs the surgery or his career might be in jeopardy if he injures it more. This is not a muscle pull, it is a tear in a major part of your body. Very irresponsible of the Yankees to think any treatment other than surgery is going to work

SS.. My post was referring to the original poster saying it was “irresponsible” of the Yankees that he didn’t get the surgery. It’s not their call. They can’t force it on him. He mayneed it and probably does but it’s his call not theirs.

this is why if surgery is even a possible option, its best to take it. Any time a player tries rest it solves little. No reason to aggrivate things more.

Andujar should opt for the surgery. Next year and beyond matters more than now. Perhaps Urshela isn’t the second coming of Schmidt or even Brosius right now, but hey, let’s take it and hope he continues to do what he does.

You don’t rush into surgery on a torn labrum if it’s potentially avoidable. Cursory Google search brings up a study showing outcomes are much better where surgery isn’t needed. Shoulders are not as easy to fix as elbows.

LH Kyle Seager has a gold glove, motivated after coming off a down year, will be off the DL in a couple weeks- he’d hit 30+ HRs in Yankee Stadium with that RF porch. Give the Ms a RP and a prospect and you can have him.
