Cardinals Claim Adalberto Mejia

By Steve Adams | July 30, 2019 at 2:37pm CDT

The Cardinals announced that they’ve claimed left-hander Adalberto Mejia off waivers from the Angels. Infielder Jedd Gyorko was moved from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL in a corresponding 40-man roster move. St. Louis also announced the previously reported demotion of Harrison Bader and promotion of fellow outfielder Lane Thomas.

Mejia, 26, was only with the Halos briefly. He appeared in four games there, allowing a run on four hits with a 6-to-1 K/BB ratio before being designated for assignment a second time this season. The former top 100 prospect had been with the Twins since Minnesota acquired him in the 2016 deal that sent Eduardo Nunez to San Francisco, but he was ultimately cut loose after significant struggles both with injuries and performance.

A former starter, Mejia shifted to a bullpen role on a full-time basis this season but has been tagged for 17 runs on 20 hits and 13 walks with 21 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings of work. Mejia has a solid track record in Triple-A but can’t be sent there to continue sorting things out, as he’s out of minor league options. He’ll take a spot in the Cardinals’ bullpen for now, but depending on what moves St. Louis is able to make between now and tomorrow afternoon’s trade deadline, his stay with the Cards could prove even more abbreviated than his time with the Angels.

If he can’t throw strikes, he’ll fit right in on some of the other Jewel relievers Mozeliak usually comes up with at the Trading deadlines. Wow! Eating players salaries seem to be getting to the norm, rather than the abnormally with The Cardinals main BRAIN in John Mozeliak.

Agreed. I’m really starting to think about disassociating myself from other Cardinals “fans” cause a good number of them have no idea about anything. Move like this most jump and complain and talk about how it’s not “big enough” even though it’s a depth move, just like getting the guy from the Dodgers was a Depth move. They weren’t intended to be moves to push the club over the hump.

There are millions of Cardinal fans, so please don’t disparage all of the Cardinals fans for a few weak minded or thought out comments. I get the frustration of hoping for a trade piece that will help the club, but smaller moves like this are a necessary part of running a business. Just In case someone reading this thinks it’s all about winning the most games or winning the World Series – it clearly is not. It’s about maintaining a profitable business model and that is what Mozeliak is doing. However, having said that I do believe that if the Cardinals miss the playoffs this year his job is most likely on the line. If it isn’t then we have a clear answer of the DeWitt business model I was just recently at the Cards/Astros game. 44k people there in the sun and paying 10 for a soda and 22.75 for a burger and fries or a hot dog and fried. I bought a $7 bottle of water

Nope. Picking up guys off the waiver wire is a clear indication that they intend to do nothing else at the trade deadline whatsoever, and that Mo/Girsch will do NOTHING to improve the team other than, you know, trade for Paul Goldschmidt and Marcell Ozuna two off-seasons in a row and try to land Giancarlo Stanton.

The acquisitions and NOT making acquisitions that could have helped this team and teams in the last 3-5 years be better. Winning 86 games and missing the playoffs means nothing to me. Gyorko is on a rehab assignment, so his 60 days must be up soon. Hard to see how this move fits if he cannot be optioned. Webb, while hardly reliable has been better than I imagined. Maybe he is part of a bigger deal but it is hard to see many teams wanting him. Chicago does have a number of lefties, Rizzo, Swarber, and Heyward, but expecting Mejia to contribute seems like a stretch. I am confused.

Shaking my head in disgust. Fire Mo and Girsch if this is all they will do. 2 lefty AAA journeyman is pathetic. Save my money for the Blues.

You should be embarrassed as a Cardinals fan after these horrible moves by the front office. Heads need to roll if this is the BIG move.

Dude, are you kidding? This is a no-downside move for a lefty. Nobody said Mejia was going to save the season. These kinds of moves happen every day, former prospects get flyers taken on them all the time.

Grab a waiver guy in May, nbd. Grab one in July and YOU SHOULD BE EMBARRASSED TO BE A FAN.

really because if you read MLBTRADE then you would realize that most articles recently are about these type of moves?

Exactly cards81…..and if you notice, these types of moves are completed by teams grabbing at straws. Right now…..the Cardinals have a bunch of stale straws from A Ball to the MLB team.

Anyone that criticizes this move as “Mo being lazy” will automatically show themselves to be a hate-filled idiot. This is not a move to scorn nor celebrate. This is a move.

Adding Mejia to the 40-man roster, however long would hint more guys on the 40-man are going to be moved. Neither Arozarena nor Fernandez are on the list, so likely any move wouldn’t include them. All speculation at this point I know, but just trying to see how pieces could fit.

Mejia is exactly the type of guy the Angels should have held on to. He had promise at one point and control remaining.

Keeping him and cutting Cahill makes much more sense.

Depth move. Nothing to see here. Get back to grazing at Busch. Mo has new sod being delivered for all the sheeple. Move along. It’s not in sheeple DNA to think for themselves.

Why do you continue to reference the Cubs to me? Other than a massive case of insecurity, what is it? Or is it just that?

The Cubs go out and get Phelps and the Brewers get Lyles and this is how the Cards respond? I won’t be renewing my season tickets.

I guess we’ll find out tomorrow if this was just a depth move or the Cardinals-Dewitt basically saying they spent the money in the off season and foolishly extending Carpenter.

You can’t blame some of the fans for being frustrated at some of the moves and lack of action at the deadline the last 3 season. I mean the Cardinals haven’t been to the postseason since 2015. I get it some deserve Oscars for best dramatic performance.

Hopefully….Just Hopefully, the Cardinals find a trade and pull the trigger for a left handed Starter and a potent lefthander who can throw strikes for the Bullpen before the Trading Deadline.

Lefty’s don’t have to be good against the Cubs: Bring a lefty in to face Schwarbs and Maddon will double switch. Start a Lefty against the Cubs and maybe Maddon sits Mr. Heyward and the Schwarbs. Just having the lefty option will cripple how Maddon wants to manage the game from his predetermined list of moves.
