The Cardinals announced that they’ve claimed left-hander Adalberto Mejia off waivers from the Angels. Infielder Jedd Gyorko was moved from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL in a corresponding 40-man roster move. St. Louis also announced the previously reported demotion of Harrison Bader and promotion of fellow outfielder Lane Thomas.
Mejia, 26, was only with the Halos briefly. He appeared in four games there, allowing a run on four hits with a 6-to-1 K/BB ratio before being designated for assignment a second time this season. The former top 100 prospect had been with the Twins since Minnesota acquired him in the 2016 deal that sent Eduardo Nunez to San Francisco, but he was ultimately cut loose after significant struggles both with injuries and performance.
A former starter, Mejia shifted to a bullpen role on a full-time basis this season but has been tagged for 17 runs on 20 hits and 13 walks with 21 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings of work. Mejia has a solid track record in Triple-A but can’t be sent there to continue sorting things out, as he’s out of minor league options. He’ll take a spot in the Cardinals’ bullpen for now, but depending on what moves St. Louis is able to make between now and tomorrow afternoon’s trade deadline, his stay with the Cards could prove even more abbreviated than his time with the Angels.
twinsfan368
Believe me he can’t throw strikes coming from a twins fan
angels fan 3
I watched him throw strikes
uncle mike
If he can’t throw strikes, he’ll fit right in on some of the other Jewel relievers Mozeliak usually comes up with at the Trading deadlines. Wow! Eating players salaries seem to be getting to the norm, rather than the abnormally with The Cardinals main BRAIN in John Mozeliak.
SocraticGadfly
Exactly. Why?
Note to Mo: There was this guy named “Dallas Keuchel” that you decided not to sign.
EndinStealth
Kuechel had a choice, just so you know. This isnt playstation.
Nick Stevens
He could only choose a team that MADE AN OFFER.
baseballpun
So who’s moving off the active roster?
stan lee the manly
Jedd Gyorko to 60 day. If they make a move for a better lefty, this guy is probably the next to go
baseballpun
Yeah so that gets him to the 40-man, but who is he replacing on the active roster if he’s joining the big league club?
STLCards33
Prolly Tyler Webb
stan lee the manly
Ah I see what you mean. Is Ravelo still on the roster? Him or Webb are my guess.
baseballpun
Oh yeah, probably Ravelo. The way the starters have sold out the pen they better keep Webb up for now.
EndinStealth
There has to be more moves on the way. I just cant see them claiming him and not being able to option him to AAA. It’s a long time (5 weeks) until rosters expand.
Payne Train
Awesome …… just awesome
jdgoat
I’m kind of surprised all these rebuilding teams have now passed on him for a second time. He has a lot more upside than some of the guys that they’re rolling out.
Payne Train
I would probably agree with that – too bad he’s out of options though. Would be nice to just stash him in AAA
kaido24
Mo / Girsch should’ve probably passed on this one.
stan lee the manly
Why? If they get someone better then they just send him on his merry way
jrad2007
Why? He didn’t cost anything and Gyorko goes to 60 day IL. Why not take a flyer on a former top prospect with no risk involved.
kaido24
I’m all for depth moves, but I would have passed on this one. They know more than I do though and he could just be DFAed so if he doesn’t do well or we get something better. *shrug*
STLCards33
He is ZERO risk and a fresh arm for the bullpen. He can be let go just as quickly as he was added
dmarcus15
League minimum not risk at all.
moe 3
I hope Mo realizes even the most loyal of fan bases is really getting tired of crap moves like this and his senseless explanations
batty
This is a common type move that every single team makes. He’s depth that costs next to nothing and easily DFA’d.
Quit whining.
mike-5
Agreed. I’m really starting to think about disassociating myself from other Cardinals “fans” cause a good number of them have no idea about anything. Move like this most jump and complain and talk about how it’s not “big enough” even though it’s a depth move, just like getting the guy from the Dodgers was a Depth move. They weren’t intended to be moves to push the club over the hump.
mack423
This has been my stance since about 2013. Cardinals fans for the most part are not smart. What to do when your own fan base sucks?
batty
Every fan base has these types of people.
clepto
See Themed and Cards81 as pure examples of this. Pure examples…
cards81
shut up Mack423…every fan base has its diversity in fans…so you saying “for the most part are not smart”, really just shows how unintelligent and intolerant you are
cards81
lol clepto my biggest fan…hey clepto! the guy who comes on here with nothing useful or relative to say about article…just to mention me…im so honored
chicagofan1978
Yeah every team on here has that one person that makes their fan base look horrible. It’s sports in general. We get so passionate about it that we think we know everything and how to win our teams a championship.
troll
what did you bring with that comment?
live42day
There are millions of Cardinal fans, so please don’t disparage all of the Cardinals fans for a few weak minded or thought out comments. I get the frustration of hoping for a trade piece that will help the club, but smaller moves like this are a necessary part of running a business. Just In case someone reading this thinks it’s all about winning the most games or winning the World Series – it clearly is not. It’s about maintaining a profitable business model and that is what Mozeliak is doing. However, having said that I do believe that if the Cardinals miss the playoffs this year his job is most likely on the line. If it isn’t then we have a clear answer of the DeWitt business model I was just recently at the Cards/Astros game. 44k people there in the sun and paying 10 for a soda and 22.75 for a burger and fries or a hot dog and fried. I bought a $7 bottle of water
Payne Train
Yeah a whole fan base sucks based off of 10 guys and a online forum ! Grrrrr, I’m bored :,-(
SocraticGadfly
Right. Signing Dallas Keuchel could have pushed the team over the hump.
Oh, wait. Mo didn’t do that.
Payne Train
Unfortunately, you are correct …still trying to figure out why we didn’t .
themed
You must mean people that know exactly what they are talking about. Thank you cleptomaniact
Nick Stevens
Well…. BYE
Sandrsmith
I agree with your comment about concessions, but Busch stadium is one of the few professional stadiums that you can take food and non alcoholic beverages into and I always do.
Cardsfanatik redux
I highly doubt Mo cares what you or I think. This is only a depth move anyway.
cards81
It’s a depth move…he could always clear waivers and accept an assignment to Triple A
baseballpun
Nope. Picking up guys off the waiver wire is a clear indication that they intend to do nothing else at the trade deadline whatsoever, and that Mo/Girsch will do NOTHING to improve the team other than, you know, trade for Paul Goldschmidt and Marcell Ozuna two off-seasons in a row and try to land Giancarlo Stanton.
mike-5
Oh yeah, cause you totally know everything.
EndinStealth
He was being sarcastic
Nick Stevens
Depth move. Code for: piling up s##t
mack423
Not the worst strategy for relief, especially LH relief
themed
Just like the move the cubs made today nicker.
STLCards33
You consistently comment the dumbest stuff ever. It’d be a lot better if you just kept your terrible opinions to yourself
stan lee the manly
You would think a group of people that goes to rumors sites for baseball would at least understand the basis of a depth move, but it is staggering how many people don’t.
Nick Stevens
Depth move is a term used because they know fans can’t think for themselves. And to THEMED, don’t respond to my comments when you already went crying to the moderators to have me flagged.
cards81
Actaully nick I was just listening to espn and major league players and analyst said it was a clear depth move…I guess they can’t think for themselves also?
Nick Stevens
There’s a group of people going to drink koolaid in the jungle. Are you going to join them too? Media latches onto a narrative. Shockingly the public follows them. News at 11.
themed
Where exactly would one go to cry to the moderators. I didn’t even know you could get flagged here but that would me good for you nicker.
Nick Stevens
Nicker? That’s cute.
clepto
Wow, another gem.
cards81
Hi Clepto! Geez I’ve missed you…you haven’t been around much…it’s like ever since I called you out on being a crazy stalker person you stopped commenting on everything I say…but today you made your come back with mentioning me again…I knew my biggest fan was still out there…cheers mate
Nick Stevens
Mozeliak is a freaking joke, but I love the apologists already chiming in and defending this joke of a pick up.
Payne Train
Mozeliak is a GM …. what are you ? A plumber playing fantasy baseball ?
mack423
Mozeliak isn’t even the GM … it’s Girsch. Except when this is pointed out, Cardinals fans like to say, “Yeah, but Mo is still running the show!”
baseballpun
Like how Theo still gets all the credit/blame in Chicago even though Hoyer is GM?
Nick Stevens
So tired of this comment that “Mo isn’t the GM.” We all understand, at least some of us do, how a front office works. If you think Mozeliak and Epstein and other HEADS of a front office are letting underlings like Hoyer and Girsch make the calls, then you are dumber than I already thought. You can just stop with the nonsense.
natelowda2
I hate to tell you mack. girsch cant even do his job because mo has his hands wrapped around everything. nothing will get done if he is around.
Nick Stevens
Girsch doesn’t know the difference between his azz and a hole in the wall. He acts and looks like a deer in headlights standing on I-44.
cards81
lol literally a pick that has no affect on the cardinals plans or keeping them from doing anything else but pessimistic people like Nick here will take any reason to trash talk….they can let him go or he can clear waivers and be moved to Triple A…still have 24 hours chill nick…how many times have you eaten your words lol…im guessing a lot with all the trash talk…lest we forget the cardinals are tied for first place
Nick Stevens
I never have eaten my own words. Why would I?
spudchukar
Because you are starving for attention!
Nick Stevens
Attention on an anonymous forum? You ain’t real bright, are you son?
cards81
because you are wrong a lot
Nick Stevens
Really? Like what? opinions don’t count. Give me facts about what I’ve been wrong about. My opinions differing from yours does NOT make me wrong.
cards81
you are constantly trash talking and think the cardinals are so horrible when they are tied for first place….get a life dude…actually get a doctor to examine why you are so angry
Nick Stevens
Tied for 1st on July 30th. Great. Where have they finished for 3 years? Now looking at 4. I look at the big picture of what has been going. The hirings. The trades. The acquisitions and NOT making acquisitions that could have helped this team and teams in the last 3-5 years be better. Winning 86 games and missing the playoffs means nothing to me. I know it’s DeWitt and Mo’s motto to “be competitive”, but it’s not mine.
cards81
that is fine Nick…but you could do it with a little more class and tactic…I agree that Mo has made some bad moves and Im not to happy about it either…but in the overall picture he has done good things also….every GM or president of baseball operations have made bad moves…look at Theo…the fact that they have only won one WS with that team is a joke…not to mention he is tied with the cardinals for first place lol
WillieMaysHayes24
Dude, no one cares about your ignorant irrelevant opinion. All you do is run your mouth with the SAME bs over and over. You can’t even come up with an original thought….
WillieMaysHayes24
He’s mad that he was cursed with a tiny pecker. And his wife left him for a cardinals fan…..poor little fella.
Nick Stevens
You care, dude.
Nick Stevens
Brilliant message brought to you by your local 5th grade bully. Grow up you ignorant azz
WillieMaysHayes24
I’m just playing your game, Nicole. Don’t get your panties in a bunch.
Nick Stevens
No you’re not, you loser. I don’t feel the need to talk about Male anatomy. People who make comments like that are truly the ones with a complex. Then again, you’re an uneducated azz who doesn’t know that. Keep chirping.
WillieMaysHayes24
Did you forget to take your Midol today, Nikki?
You sure do get triggered easily. Little man’s syndrome as well?
Nick Stevens
Midol. Little Man Syndrome. Got any more gems from your 5th grade playbook, Super Dave?
Bunselpower
As big of a joke as someone that chimes in to criticize a no-downside move?
spudchukar
Gyorko is on a rehab assignment, so his 60 days must be up soon. Hard to see how this move fits if he cannot be optioned. Webb, while hardly reliable has been better than I imagined. Maybe he is part of a bigger deal but it is hard to see many teams wanting him. Chicago does have a number of lefties, Rizzo, Swarber, and Heyward, but expecting Mejia to contribute seems like a stretch. I am confused.
cards81
do people read the article or just comment right away…its not confusing at all…take a chance at depth…if he clears waivers he can be sent down…if not they can release him
“He’ll take a spot in the Cardinals’ bullpen for now, but depending on what moves St. Louis is able to make between now and tomorrow afternoon’s trade deadline, his stay with the Cards could prove even more abbreviated than his time with the Angels.
kaido24
That’s a fair point.
spudchukar
I get all that. Maybe it is a defensive move, but Milwaukee would have to pass, and I have no idea if the Cards would get the next choice or Chicago, since we are tied. Anybody know if all teams would have a shot at Mejia if he is put through waivers, or just teams above St.Louis?
clepto
Pot calling the kettle black?
bkbk
Like those Alligator seats in the Rover, this is gonna bite Eppler in the butt.,
RJY707499
Shaking my head in disgust. Fire Mo and Girsch if this is all they will do. 2 lefty AAA journeyman is pathetic. Save my money for the Blues.
RJY707499
You should be embarrassed as a Cardinals fan after these horrible moves by the front office. Heads need to roll if this is the BIG move.
Bunselpower
Dude, are you kidding? This is a no-downside move for a lefty. Nobody said Mejia was going to save the season. These kinds of moves happen every day, former prospects get flyers taken on them all the time.
baseballpun
Grab a waiver guy in May, nbd. Grab one in July and YOU SHOULD BE EMBARRASSED TO BE A FAN.
kaido24
Seems legit.
cards81
really because if you read MLBTRADE then you would realize that most articles recently are about these type of moves?
uncle mike
Exactly cards81…..and if you notice, these types of moves are completed by teams grabbing at straws. Right now…..the Cardinals have a bunch of stale straws from A Ball to the MLB team.
nmahan1984
Honestly, I’m more embarrassed of “fans” like you.
Bunselpower
Anyone that criticizes this move as “Mo being lazy” will automatically show themselves to be a hate-filled idiot. This is not a move to scorn nor celebrate. This is a move.
DarkSide830
i know, whenever someone does something in their job jurisdiction, i always think, “darn, how lazy of them”
spudchukar
Adding Mejia to the 40-man roster, however long would hint more guys on the 40-man are going to be moved. Neither Arozarena nor Fernandez are on the list, so likely any move wouldn’t include them. All speculation at this point I know, but just trying to see how pieces could fit.
HalosHeavenJJ
Mejia is exactly the type of guy the Angels should have held on to. He had promise at one point and control remaining.
Keeping him and cutting Cahill makes much more sense.
Nick Stevens
Depth move. Nothing to see here. Get back to grazing at Busch. Mo has new sod being delivered for all the sheeple. Move along. It’s not in sheeple DNA to think for themselves.
cards81
lol you are right nick…I’m going to go ahead and not listen to anyone but NICK STEVENS on mlbtraderumors
Nick Stevens
good move
themed
Hey chicago what do you say the cubs just went and lost today!
Nick Stevens
Why do you continue to reference the Cubs to me? Other than a massive case of insecurity, what is it? Or is it just that?
allweatherfan
The Cubs go out and get Phelps and the Brewers get Lyles and this is how the Cards respond? I won’t be renewing my season tickets.
nmahan1984
HAHA! I bet the Cards are gonna make some moves now. Don’t renew, that’ll show em.
619bird
I guess we’ll find out tomorrow if this was just a depth move or the Cardinals-Dewitt basically saying they spent the money in the off season and foolishly extending Carpenter.
You can’t blame some of the fans for being frustrated at some of the moves and lack of action at the deadline the last 3 season. I mean the Cardinals haven’t been to the postseason since 2015. I get it some deserve Oscars for best dramatic performance.
irol2
There is still time for MO to get his sh#$ straight and get Robbie Ray!
uncle mike
Hopefully….Just Hopefully, the Cardinals find a trade and pull the trigger for a left handed Starter and a potent lefthander who can throw strikes for the Bullpen before the Trading Deadline.
troll
mo just petitioned the state of missouri to change his name to less
@budselig6969
Meanwhile Brett Cecil is out there somewhere collecting his money….and laughing.
Honestabe
Lefty’s don’t have to be good against the Cubs: Bring a lefty in to face Schwarbs and Maddon will double switch. Start a Lefty against the Cubs and maybe Maddon sits Mr. Heyward and the Schwarbs. Just having the lefty option will cripple how Maddon wants to manage the game from his predetermined list of moves.
fannclub6
What’s next for our club? Maybe Bartolo Colon for a 5th starter??
