Nationals Place Max Scherzer On 10-Day IL

By Jeff Todd | July 29, 2019 at 2:23pm CDT

The Nationals have placed ace righty Max Scherzer on the 10-day injured list, per a club announcement. Erick Fedde was called up to take his active-roster spot.

Scherzer is dealing with a mild rhomboid strain, the second seemingly minor upper back/shoulder malady he has come down with this year. The hope remains that the superb starter will not miss too much time, but it was evidently determined he’d be sidelined long enough to warrant a move to bring in another arm.

It’s a balancing act for Scherzer and the Nats. Both would obviously prefer that he be on the mound right now, but the issues he’s experiencing are in a worrying area of the body. The club must also ensure it has Scherzer at full health down the stretch.

Fedde, 26, has delivered 50 1/3 innings of 3.40 ERA ball this year in eight starts and five relief appearances. Unfortunately, he’s also carrying an uninspiring blend of 26 strikeouts and 21 walks. He’ll help hold down the fort for the time being, but the Nats have an obvious need to add hurlers over the next two days.

Anyone else hoping everytime they get a notification from this app that it’s an important trade, only to be disappointed by some random news like this

Well as much as I want a big trade as well, I wouldn’t consider Scherzer going to the IL as random.

This move wasn’t necessarily as random, but it was also pretty expected with the recent news of him dealing with lingering back issues.

Still very much news. Have to ask: Would you have same view if he wasn’t a former Tiger?

Aaron Sanchez? That’s a heck of a gamble — if the Nats feel they need to take a big high-reward move to desperately chase the Braves that could their guy, but let’s not overlook his 6.07 ERA. It’s not an aberration either, as his FIP is 5.02 over the last three seasons total.

As a Braves fan opening up a series against them (possibly without Acuna?) – where Scherzer was possibly going to pitch — this isn’t random. This is the 2nd time on the IL for one of the top SPs in the game – 2 days before the (hard) trade deadline for a contending club. This could have ramifications.

There isn’t gonna be any big trades this year. Nobody like Machado is available and teams are becoming to comfortable with their prospects.

One of the best pitchers in baseball is hurt and back on the DL while his team is in the middle of a playoff race. How the hell is this “random news”

Damn it. Nationals need a healthy Max. I don’t want to see him back on the DL, but they need him in September/October more than now

True, but 1 series vs. ATL – then they only have 2 more head-to-head in Sept before the end of the year. It’s those games that are key if WSH wants to make a run at the division.

Yeah Anibal/Voth have pitched well against us. I believe Fedde is starting on Tuesday but as a Braves fan, I’m still nervous. After that 2 game sweep by the Royals, I’ve just had an uneasy feeling. Hopefully Dansby is back sooner than later. Let’s see what AA has up his sleeve in terms of reinforcements by the 31st.

I watched the last game he pitched before the ASB when (as FP Santangelo put it) he emptied the tank in the 7th against KC. Can’t totally blame Martínez for not pulling him earlier given the shaky options in the bullpen.

Right. The Giants are in go for it mode at 2 games over .500. Hard to imagine them even making it to the play-in game, but what will most likely result from their NOT trading MadBum is giving him an insane extension that will essentially make him untradeable for the remainder of his career.

I hate this. I’m a Braves fan and I think the Braves can win the NL East with the Nationals at full strength. The Braves have Swanson and Markakis in the IL and I still think they can because that’s the depth of their line up. Even with both out pitching is STILL the need.

Yes, but Stras/Scherzer have dominated us recently. Don’t underestimate them being out this series when there’s only 2 more together before the end of the year.

Well, considering that he went almost 3 weeks between his last 2 starts, and it still is not healed properly, I would venture to say that this is big news especially with the Nationals on the fringe of the WC.

I wonder if the Nationals can get by with Fedde or Ross in the rotation for any length of time. Fedde is probably a four inning pitcher and Ross was good two games ago but got bombed last time out. More often than not, those are games they lose. It’s too bad Austin Voth got hurt. I have a lot more confidence in him than the others. I truly believe that the Nationals can beat the Dodgers in October if they get another reliever or two but I would like them to get past the Braves which won’t be easy. I think being the wild card winner lessens your chances of continuing. I thought with there being only one deadline, there would be more activity. Shows you what I know. Are there going to be ten major deals in the next 26 hours?
