Rockies Acquire Joe Harvey

By Mark Polishuk | July 31, 2019 at 6:50pm CDT

In a minor move completed prior to the trade deadline, the Rockies acquired right-hander Joe Harvey from the Yankees for minor league left-hander Alfredo Garcia, as per a Yankees media release.

Harvey, 27, was a 19th-round pick for the Yankees in the 2014 draft.  The righty has worked as a reliever in 118 of his 124 professional games, while posting some impressive numbers — a 1.96 ERA, 10.3 K/9, and 2.98 K/BB rate over 170 innings in the minors.  This performance, in particular some good numbers at Triple-A over the last two years, earned Harvey his first Major League promotion, and he delivered a 4.50 ERA over 10 relief innings for New York this season.

Despite these solid results, Harvey was something of an expendable piece on the Yankees’ depth chart, and opted to move him for a younger arm with perhaps more long-term upside.  Garcia, who just celebrated his 20th birthday on July 22, has a 4.85 ERA, 8.6 K/9, and 2.58 K/BB rate over 200 1/3 minor league innings, none above the A-ball level.  Originally signed for a $1MM bonus at the start of the 2016-17 international signing period, Garcia has worked as a starter in 38 of his 42 games in the Rockies’ farm system.

Melchez, go somewhere else. Frazier is a starting OF’er on 25 or so teams, at least. His defense needs work, but he’s proven to be offensively ready for MLB. Garcia is only 20 years old and already at AAA, and he’s a top 100 prospect (ranked 66).

Frazier is only losing value. After a while teams start to wonder why players 25 years old can’t find a way onto an mlb field

his numbers indicate it’s not because he can’t hit. something like .285/.330./500 with 11 hrs in 50 or so games is pretty good.

Can’t find his way on to the field for the Yankees because of (when healthy) Gardner, Judge, Stanton, and Hicks. Also a red hot Mike Tauchmann

They have kept Tauchman and Maybin at the MLB level over Frazier due to their defensive versatility, they both can play all 3 OF positions, not because of offense. Offensively, Frazier is the best of the 3. Frazier’s defensive issues is why he’s in AAA and not MLB.

I haven’t really watched him pitch, but looking at the numbers, Deivi doesn’t scream to me as an “untouchable” prospect. He has promise, he’s been a fast riser, but he struggles with his control. Additionally, a 5’9” right handed starter typically doesn’t lead to being a dominant starter.

But if you listen to NY sports radio m, you have talkshow hosts and Yankee fans claiming this guy can be their savior to their rotation issues this season. Yankees aren’t Boston bad in overhyping their prospects, but they aren’t far off. Same with the Mets, must be a New York thing.

Plus Garcia will likely have training wheels until 2021. He’ll probably make his big league debut next May or June but be limited to around 150 innings and move to the bullpen late in the season. 2021 when he’s almost 22 years old and has a bit of experience under his belt is when he’ll probably have free reign. The people who think he’s debuting this year and will immediately be an ace are nuts

Sometimes the best moves are the ones you don’t make. I think Cashman did the right thing , none of the pitchers were upgrades except for Greinke who wasn;t coming to the Yanks anyway and Bauer who Cleveland wouldn’t trade to the Yanks. Cashman got 2 good pitchers over the winter in Happ and Paxton, they need to pitch to their potential. Losing Severino also hurt. One thing for sure, the best team doesn;t always win in baseball.

Well Happ and Paxton are pitching awful, and Cashman did nothing. Instead we can lose the division series and have Garcia be a middle reliever. All the comparisons to the 1998 team. What else did they have? El Duké! Gotten from a trade and brought the Yankees home a title! But no, let’s keep our crummy prospects. Wild cards fly forever. BVW is better than Cashman at this point. Cashman a joke who should be fired

what is there to be done? what ace is available that they honestly had a chance on? maybe Bauer but just because it didn’t happen doesn’t mean a guy like Garcia WASN’T offered. Ppl act as if a trade happens in a vacuum. maybe other teams had prospect packages that the Indians preferred? stupid reaction from so called “fans”.

Do me a favor. look at the Yanks top 30 prospect list from 2-4 years ago. look at the prospects they kept. Judge, Severino, Sanchez, Andujar, Torres, German, Montgomery, Bird. aside from Bird, they all have graduated and became contributors. Look at how many prospects were traded. that says something. and this far none of the ones traded have given us reason to miss them.

this idea that the Yanks DIDN’T try and were scared to move Garcia are all uninformed opinions. we have no clue as to who they offered, what the the other side thought of our prospects or if they simply took other offers because they valued them more. im 90% sure that the Yanks are committed to win this year but it’s not exactly a geat year for SP on the trade market. The Giants didn’t seem like they really wanted to move Bum. What if the ask was Garcia, Florial, Frazier, Andujar and more. Should he have done it anyway?

i have no desire to protect Cash. im not getting a piece of his check but can we just agree that without knowing what the ask/offer was were really having uninformed conversations and sounding like Monday morning quarterbacks? What if the Indians simply didn’t like Garcia? what if they didn’t want Frazier, what if Florial’s numbers scared them away? why do we think Cash simply wasn’t trying? isn’t that the literal definition of entitlement? If Cash offers then how can you possibly turn him down? yeezus.

Paxton isn’t pitching well right now, but underlying metrics tell a different story. He was lights out up until the IL stint and has faced some pretty good offenses during hotstreaks which even the best pitchers would struggle with. Knee could be a factor. Have a feeling he turns it around this month.

nearly every pitcher traded was arguably better than anyone in our rotation this year. including the great tanner roark…

even ex- yank greene has been better than all but Chap.

facing verlander, cole and greinke is far far far more daunting than pax, tanaka, and german.

Yankees have been cheap, they have been outbid or simply seems like they haven;t tried. I understand back in 2015 or 2016 not to go all in or spend big bucks because you are going under the tax, but in 2017 it was said that money kept Detroit and Yankees from getting a Verlander deal done. Yankees apparently got outbid for Corbin and other in the offseaon. I understand not going all in trading all your prospects but I agree, Cash just cant seem to net the big fish in the pitching sea.

That’s not true at all. Bauer and Stroman are both upgrades on everybody they’ve rolled out their this year. And sometimes the best moves are the ones you don’t make. Sitting back and letting the team that’s most likely going to be your biggest competition go from amazing to God team is not the case though.

Well I still say Yankees lost this deadline because of last offseason they needed to sign another starter they hyped up the fanbase with all this 2 pitchers bologna and they got Happ back (instead of spending a little on Corbin) and they traded away a potential 3-4 starter in Sheff for Paxton.. Not mad about the Paxton deal, but resigning Happ may have sounded good on paper and the track record, but why not sign Corbin as well. People may say well you had 6 guys, Well CC should have never been counted on to go 32 starts, so Sevy went down and German stepped up, but Paxton, Tanaka and German have been on the IL, Essentially you would have ended up with German, Tanaka, Paxton, Happ Corbin, With CC and Sevy on the IL most of the time. Its just the fact that Cash trusted too much on CC and Happ being the guys from the past. He was brilliant when he signed DJ, but Cash has a bad history with signing pitchers and trading for them. Still go Yankees. I hope Paxton and Happ can get their mojo and Tanaka can get back his split to split when he wants it too.

As a lifelong Yankees I’m fine standing pat but there’s no value to Frazier keeping him in AAA. With Judge, Hicks in RF and CF and players options who are contributing in LF – Gardner, Tauchman, Maybin – where is he going to play?

I agree, too many OF.. Even next year where will he play. Yankees gave up his spot when they got Stanton. IF not the OF next year is Hicks CF, Judge RF and Tauchman LF or Stanton at DH/LF. No place for Frazier…

Even more of a problem is that Frazier and Andujar cannot coexist on this team moving forward. They are both DH first players. Unless one finally learns a position, one will have to go.

I personally would have given up Frazier and three other prospects not named Garcia, Florial and Dominguez for Ray.

My guess is the other three were good prospects but still years away from contributing at the major league level – Schmidt, Gil, etc….
