Braves Select John Ryan Murphy

By Jeff Todd | September 17, 2019 at 12:05pm CDT

The Braves announced today that they have selected the contract of catcher John Ryan Murphy. A 40-man roster spot was cleared by placing injured utilityman Charlie Culberson on the 60-day injured list.

Murphy, 28, was added over the summer in a minor swap with the Diamondbacks. He had struggled to a .177/.250/.419 batting line in 69 MLB plate appearances with the Arizona organization.

The Braves likely intend to utilize Murphy to reduce the wear and tear on the club’s primary backstops. With the division all but sewn up, the focus now is on preparing the roster for the postseason. While he’s technically eligible for the playoffs if needed, Murphy is fourth on the depth chart.

Most importantly, the Twins thought so when they traded Hicks for him.

Why? Murphy looks like he was a back up in MiLB to Austin Romine, Bobby Wilson, Francisco Cervelli.

The Yankees valued him correctly. They sold high on him to get one of the better centerfielders in the game, sooooo…

Why isn’t MLBTR allowing comments on the Vazquez story? It isn’t some political article where people are going to disagree and attack each other, pretty much everyone here agrees Vazquez is disgusting.

Censorship my man. I’m sure it’ll be spun in a roundabout way but that’s exactly what it is. Deadspin, Barstool sports, and I’m sure Fangraphs when they make an article will allow comments.

I’ll delete these comments as well, but first let me respond.

We have plenty of experience with this general category of story, unfortunately. Every time we post one and try to monitor the comments, it goes well off the rails and well beyond our capacity to moderate.

Bonquisha – appreciate you reading the site, but … censorship? This is a privately owned site which can choose to host or not host discussions on whatever topics it wishes. And we do not “censor” based upon viewpoint, choosing the ones we like and banning others.

As you note, there are other places to have this discussion. Go forth. You have not been wronged.

Also we will ask that you keep your comments to the subject at hand in a given post. So, please stop spreading Vazquez comments throughout the board.

I’ll behave. But you did prove my caveat to be absolutely correct (roundabout way). Thank you for the response though.

Censorship: the suppression or prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, etc. that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security:

Some of us when making a comment are nutz. Best to shut it down than pick through the wackos comments. Not censorship at all. I like being protected. Sorry and thanks.

Why are comments allowed on the NFL Trade Rumors regarding the same exact issues and stories? That side owned by someone else I take it?

I really hope the braces intend on keeping just McCann and cervelli. I get Charlie was the emergency catcher and now we can’t use our back up catcher to pinch hit on that given day but I’d keep 14 players and 11 pitchers cause if that and you don’t need a 5th starter. Have billy Hamilton, cervelli, Hech, Joyce, Riley, and Duvall as your bench since Charlie and probably Camargo are finished for the year.

Braces? I think the Braves intend to go after a younger catcher in the off season. This very well could be both Cervelli and McCanns last season.

Hopefully we can capture the division over the next couple days and rest some folks. Not to mention get that bench some much needed playing time heading into the playoffs

Yea. I’ll admit… I was one of those guys. In all fairness though…. we made no upgrades to a bullpen that was brutal and everyone else looked to get significantly better. I just didn’t realize that guys like Max fried would take a huge step forward this year and Riley would come up looking like a freak for a month plus. Those little things make a big difference

Like to see Albies and Donaldson get a breather, need to wrap up this division already. 5-4 loss tonight didn’t help.
