The Dodgers placed Max Muncy on the 10-day injured list this evening, an inevitability after he was helped off the field following an ugly left knee injury yesterday. He has been diagnosed with a bone bruise and tells Sonja Chen of MLB.com that he expects to be out for roughly six weeks. Imaging did not reveal any structural damage.
All things considered, this is probably a positive development. Muncy’s knee appeared to snap back awkwardly when he was injured in a collision with White Sox outfielder Michael A. Taylor. Taylor was attempting to steal third base and unintentionally dove directly into Muncy’s knee as the infielder stretched to apply the tag. Muncy was in a lot of pain and gingerly walked off the field with assistance from trainers. It raised initial fears about potential season-ending ligament damage.
Those proved unfounded, though the bone bruise will keep him on the shelf into the middle or end of August. Muncy has been on a tear for the past couple months. After hitting .194 over the season’s first month, he has raked at a .282/.410/.546 clip with 12 home runs since the beginning of May. That shut down any speculation that the Dodgers would trade for a third baseman. A season-ending injury might have changed that calculus, but it’s unlikely they’d alter their deadline plans when they expect Muncy back for the stretch run.
Miguel Rojas gets the first start at third base tonight, drawing into the nine hole against Sox righty Aaron Civale. Manager Dave Roberts told media (including David Vassegh of 570 AM) that Tommy Edman will begin taking third base drills. Rojas, Edman and Enrique Hernández will rotate through the hot corner, allowing the Dodgers to use Hyeseong Kim more frequently at second base. They also claimed CJ Alexander off waivers from the Yankees to add corner infield depth at Triple-A.
I hope they bring up Freeland to give him some experience.
The deadline priority is definitely pitching. Though wouldn’t be surprised if they added a bat regardless….
they are quite gluttonous
I see a low end starter and/or some bullpen help at most. Unless they get an opportunity at another Edman type that they can use in more than one spot and has some power.
Considering the other possibly outcomes, this is a blessing.
There will still be enough time for him to lock in for the playoffs when he gets back. And it’ll get some other guys a few reps.
Seems like a pretty long time for a bone bruise
It’s not
Did you see how his knee bent? I think it’s quick considering it looked like his season might’ve been over
They can linger for awhile.
Oh Noes!! I sure hope to heck the Dodgers have some layer of depth to cover this!!!! You say what? They have 3 maybe 4 layers of depth to cover for any absence of Muncy??? And not just AAA or Quad A depth either: it’s only (you may have heard of them) Miguel Rojas, Kiké, Little Tommy Edman, and Mr. Kim.
You see this is where the vast revenue streams the Dodgers are privy to create unfair competitive advantages. That vast incoming flow of wealth should be ciphoned off to some extent to create more revenue sharing. If any other major league team loses their starting 3B they do not have the luxury of four quality major leaguers to choose from to takeover his spot. The options would be vastly inferior Quad-A or Triple A replacement level dude.
And yet, the other teams could do this and instead the owners pocket the money.
Ignorant Son: Are you suggesting the Dodgers should try to make less money?
No I do not want the Dodgers to try to make less money. I just want them to share more of the money they do make. Especially if the money is reliant on the 29 other teams showing up to play, and the fans of 29 other teams tuning in to watch. Nothing exists in a vacuum. Any more revenue sharing money excised to go to poorer clubs must have stipulations for how that money should be spent. Dodgers revenue sharing money cannot just be pocketed by cheapskate owners of course.
The cheapskate owners are already pocketing millions!! They don’t need more money, they need to spend their own revenue.
Not sure what state you’re from, but I’m guessing that weed is legal there. Saying that Miguel Rojas, Kikè Hernández, Tommy Edman (maybe), and Kim are only available to a team like the Dodgers because of lavish spending makes zero sense. Rojas and Kilké are dirt cheap and are playing terribly. Edman is a bit of a luxury, but he’s been bad this year too. And Kim is a very cheap wild card. The Dodgers just do everything right and you’re simply sad that your team doesn’t.
Kew, I agree with everything you said except for Edman being bad. He does a lot of little things that are not in the stat line.
Freddie – I guess because he started the season so well (then tapered off heavily coming back from the IL), I just expect a bit too much
Kewldude: Weed being illegal has never stopped anyone from getting it. In fact, that’s why it’s been made legal in many places.
Blue – A friend of mine once told me that he saw a sign in an Amsterdam coffee shop for a strain of weed saying: “Americans, do not get this (unless you are from California). We always had the good stuff here since day 1.
Look around the league and see who gets to play when one of their starting 9 goes down. In virtually any case it is a replacement Quad A or rookie from Triple-A. Not an experienced veteran with loads of experience like Edman or Kikè. And we’re not even talking about what the Dodgers can do because of their ability to sign so much pitching depth. It’s definitely a completely unfair advantage because of their absurd revenue streams, but of course no Dodgers fan is going to complain about it or think it somehow tips the scales in any way. It stems all from the keen business sense and unique genius of Walter, Gugenheim, and Friedman. of course. They are like Trump cultists in that respect.
So you’re saying that Frank MCcourt could have done the same job as current ownership?
But he didn’t because he was a cheap sob with little baseball knowledge and only cared about pocketing profits. You’re just angry because many teams have a MCcourt clone who owns the team.
Dodgers fans understand your situation, and are happy to have extremely high level competence on all levels of the organization these days.
Frank could have done most of what current ownership has accomplished if he had the vision and long term planning ability required to pull it off.
So what’s the name of your Frank MCcourt clone owner these days?
The bottom line, the Doyers have an unfair advantage monetarily, and that definitely impacts their success. It is what it is, regardless of whether doyer fans think any team can do it (most can’t).
So again I ask. What is the name of your Frank MCcourt type owner?
Is your payroll now than the Rays?
two things can be true at once. Cheap owners don’t negate the Doyer’s ridiculous financial advantage
Ignorant Son-of-a-b; 😫
That’s my name, don’t wear it out.
Exactly , we most Christian Moore couple days ago , we didn’t have 4 guys with major league deals to bring up , a triple A youngster got the call , ManFred and mlb are allowing the dodgers an unfair advantage , the pirates payroll compared to the dodgers is laughable , they are approaching like 300 million lol
Will Blast: Manfred’s not “allowing.” It’s a free country and the Dodgers aren’t violating any rules.
You want socialism instead?
Not quite “free”. As countries go, in the US, citizens are “free” to choose their health care, but it doesn’t mean most can afford the options available. So they have to opt out. And what about the socialism practiced by the US govt by heavily subsidizing the energy and utility companies, which is at its all-time high right now (as of yesterday)?
In sports, while teams in small media markets understand it’s a free country, few can sustain, from a capitalistic standpoint, the LAD or NYY revenue/investment model. A middle ground exists as both sides of this fence (haves and have nots) have a rational argument.
But the reality is, the MLB model that lacks a salary cap is not working well. 16 of the last 17 WS winners have been top 8 payroll teams. I know some owners just don’t want to spend. But there are also many who would if they could but their revenues don’t enable it (from a strictly business model). The instances when owners shell out their own money and operate at a loss are rare (Peter Seidler?). Perhaps one solution is for the majority owners kick 10-12 teams out of the league and abandon the concept of revenue sharing? That will go over well.
It’s free enough that some owners can’t just arbitrarily and unilaterally decide to kick other teams out of the league or impose a salary cap or other labor rules to benefit themselves.
But go ahead and, quibble about semantics and split hairs if that’s your thing.
Not quibbling, and not supportive of Will Blast’s post, but pointing out that it’s not as simple as you make it sound.
Brew: Actually, it’s not as simple as YOU make it sound, as if a salary cap would be some type of panacea even if it were possible to jam it down the players’ collective throat.
Not saying salary cap alone is the answer, it’s a problem with no one single solution.
What Tampa Bay does with their low payroll compared to what the pirates do with their low payroll is laughable.
The Dodgers are smart like Tampa, but with more resources.
Every single team can be run smartly. Don’t complain about the dodgers payroll when your team isn’t making Tampa Bay like moves. Complain they aren’t smart like Tampa Bay.
And think about how much better the Rays would be with Wandering Frankfurter on the team.
Half man, half wolf. The full moon will rise again in August for the return of the Funky Muncy.
Thank goodness! Whew!!! I thought he would be out for the rest of the year. That is great news.
Muncy is a really slow healer. Double that or triple his recovery time. He’s gone for the season folks. Wonder if the Braves would part with Austin Riley??
THEY LIVE: And where did you receive the medical training that qualifies you to judge this?
Bowling green with envy university
I know the player’s history. Don’t believe me fine. Took him 2 years to recover from a sprained elbow and the dude is just frail and old 34.
Muncy tore his UCL at end of ’21 season. Calling him frail seems like an inaccurate characterization at best.
I was watching this game when it happened and have watched slow mo replays. His leg did *not* snap backward ackwardly or gruesomely. He was clearly in a lot pain, but it did not look like a Nick Chubb incident. The news he just suffered a bone bruise is consistent with the replay.
I agree. Just from watching the video, it appeared the damage was done from his tumbling over Taylor and coming down hard on his knee. The reported diagnosis is consistent with this, not with his knee “snapping back.”
Snapped back and to the left
Does anyone really believe this timetable???
Here’s the deal: Wait a few more weeks. If the Dodgers trade for a 3B, you were right to not believe it. Otherwise, it’s the other thing.
I can’t identify 1 Dodger injury that has actually been accurate in the past decade.
So, the deal stands? I will bet you a virtual dollar.
Mookie last year when he broke his hand is the first to come to mind. Want me to keep thinking and prove you further wrong?
How about Freddie being on the IL for ten days earlier this season?
Aw, cut it out already. I wanted to earn that virtual dollar!
Can’t even get one injury right in an entire decade. Joke of a team.
MLB cant ban one from fandom for betting on one’s own team’s injury report.
Well thanks to the Big Dodger in the Sky for that!

Senioreditor
NO. Dodgers are minimizing it.
Know-it-alls are so much fun.
Dane Dunning-Jack Kruger effect
Minimize? Everyone knows it’s Max not Min Muncy
When your principal owner is the head of the Guggenheim group which is worth close to $350 billion. You can do whatever you want. Baseball has to take control because it is an unfair advantage. We all knew about four years ago that Shohei was going to be a dodger when his Angels contract expired, but not even a hint of tampering? Come on we all knew it.
CC Ryder:,Should someone have made something up?
@ CC Ryder
Two words: Free market.
@CC Ryder….Does that valuation include Earvin Jr.’s and Billy Jean’s net worth? Just curious
lol
He’s on his way to Toronto as we speak!
I figured it wasn’t a season ender because it took so long to hear about it.
Hopefully he doesn’t lose his swing while he’s out injured like Teo and Edman did.
How about approaching the A’s about getting their Max Muncy?
Two Max Muncys on one team would be a hoot. I don’t know if the two of them even met when the A’s visited in May. I believe Max the Younger was on optional assignment at the time. A missed photo op for sure.
They played in AAA and traded lineup cards
Was Max the Elder on a rehab assignment? The only way they could have overlapped in triple-A.
Yup. Aug 12, 2024.
Maximilian and Maximus Muncy being on the same team would be awesome.
We need the maximum Muncy allowed by law
Would you say you’d have a plethora of Muncys?
