Cubs Sign Ryan Tepera

By Jeff Todd | December 20, 2019 at 3:44pm CDT

The Cubs have struck a deal with reliever Ryan Tepera, as first reported by Jon Heyman of MLB Network (via Twitter). It comes with a 40-man roster spot, though Tepera will play on a split arrangement. He’ll earn at a $900K rate in the majors and $300K in the minors.

Tepera, 32, was an effective inning for a nice stretch for the Blue Jays. But he ran into trouble in 2019, when he managed only 21 2/3 innings of 4.98 ERA ball. Long capable of striking out about a batter per inning, Tepera managed a meager 5.8 K/9 in the just-completed campaign. And he succumbed to the long ball malaise that afflicted so many other pitchers, coughing up five in 21 2/3 innings.

It’s a nice opportunity for the Cubs to seek value, though whether Tepera can bounce back may depend upon the question whether he can move past the elbow issues that plagued him in 2019. Tepera lost around 1.5 mph in average fastball velocity as compared to his ’18 numbers, with opposing hitters making contact on pitches in the zone at a 91.1% rate despite typically sitting in the low-eighties. More promisingly, Tepera was still able to generate a 12.6% swinging-strike rate and induce batters to chase on 37.3% of his pitches out of the zone.

Good depth piece. Great addition to the core. Good low risk/high ceiling move. I absolutely love this move. Cubs print money.

Almost as good as the Gio signing. ALMOST I wonder if he took less to be with the Cubs? Maybe he is just like Wheeler taking less money to avoid the south side

When Sox fans figure out that they should probably be concerned with the 14 other teams in their own league the “Rivalry” will finally go away.

It’s fun for the 4-6 games a season they play each other, but it’s old and tired outside of that.

But your assessment is close. Good depth piece, yee, low risk signing, yee.

White Sox fans are strange, they always more into hating the Cubs then rooting for their own team.

When the White Sox won the World Series, they were more focused rubbing in the Cubs fans faces then actually celebrating their team won the world Series.

I have been a diehard Cubs fan for my 39 years on this planet and even I was excited when the Sox won it all. I was at the parade, etc. You are right, it’s definitely more of a one sided rivalry at this point.

Probably just lonely if you look at how much time he spends on just this site. I couldn’t even imagine being that bored. Maybe a kid that hasn’t found the ladies yet, who knows. Merry Christmas!

Keep adding these low risk/low cost depth pitchers. Especially ones w/options. Nice way to fill out the back of the pen and add AAA depth. I’d like to see them sign a few more of these guys.

He’s had success as recently as 2018. It just remains to be seen if 2019 was an outlier, or he truly is regressing. I’m all for it though.

Solid and underappreciated in Toronto. Hope Tepera is healthy and gives the Cubs a boost.

The way this offseason is going I’m expecting a call any day now. I’m only 62 and I can still rush it up there with Jon Lester-like velo. Ready for my minor league deal.

Will you play for free and pay your way? if not the Cubs will not be calling, they have no money. Tom Rickets has been named the new grounds keeper, Theo and Jed and charge of cleaning the bathrooms at wrigley next season. they will get a extension cord and try to get power to run Wrigley field from one of the neighbors.

Theo and Jed are the ones that spent the money poorly and should be cleaning the bathrooms. The extension cord comment made me lol. Nice

Figured that he wouldn’t be back, but I was holding out a bit of hope still. I always liked him and I hope that he does well for the Cubs; he could be a very nice surprise for them.

All of this money spent for “hit or miss guys” is starting to add up. I would rather it be spent on a guy or 2 that are more reliable. I’ve lost all confidence in this front office until they prove me wrong with a deep run into the playoffs.

I see the cubs are settling in for an easy glide to mediocrity. Should be interesting to see how long this continues before Theo steps down or is fired.

2 years left on his contract, at worse he would not be renewed or he may leave. Theo said from day one ten years may be it for him

Cubs have done a bunch of these low risk type deals past couple years and I was alway kinda ehh about them rightly so cause most haven’t panned out..but this one I actually like the guy knows how to pitch and done so very well so I believe last year was an anomaly think he wasn’t fully recovered,I think he will bounce back and this one will be a steal.

If you had TJ surgery, missed three years of ball, had a 6.00 ERA in the minors, played in Japan….or are over 35 and can bounce a ball to the plate as a Lefty……..call Theo & Jed.
