Latest On Giancarlo Stanton’s Calf Injury

By Jeff Todd | March 23, 2020 at 2:33pm CDT

Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton has continued to rehab his injured calf during the coronavirus hiatus. Since last we checked in, it seems he has made significant progress.

In comments to Meredith Marakovits on YES Network, Yanks manager Aaron Boone indicated that Stanton is more or less back to full speed. (Via MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, on Twitter.) Per Boone, Stanton would “probably be ready to go” if spring contests were still on the schedule.

It remains to be seen just when Stanton will actually have a chance to re-take the field. But it’s certainly good to hear that he has improved so much even without any need for urgency.

Stanton had been expected to miss Opening Day but will now be expected to suit up when the sport finally restarts. Of course, that presumes he’ll be able to avoid any further injuries while working out during the layoff. Stanton dealt with a series of maladies in 2019, ultimately appearing in only 18 contests.

Although it seems a lot has happened, it has only been 7 days since Mannfred had his conference call to delay OD. Not saying the season will open earlier than 7/7 but it’s only been 1 week, it’s way too early to tell. Coronavirus is obviously not influenza but you’d have to think the warming of the seasons will have a similar effect on the virus. It helped the SARS outbreak in 2004. Add 3-4 weeks of SIP protocol to rapidly warming weather and I think we take a massive step forward. We should draw up an OD betting chart grid, maybe take inspiration from your favorite SB betting squares?

        630. Amazing. He missed, on average, 41 games a year across his 22 seasons. He would easily be in contention with Ruth, Aaron and Bonds in for top 3 all-time.

Ricky, you dont know baseball, that is apparent with your Griffey comment so I dont know why I bother.. but I’m on lockdown, so I have time.. Griffey played a huuuge portion of his career on the rock hard surface of the Kingdome. And since he was able to cover more ground than anyone except maybe Andruw Jones, he put a lot of hard unforgiving miles on the knees jetting across the turf. Nobody’s body could have withstood that type of abuse.

Don’t these lame injury “jokes” get tiring for some of you guys? If every injury-prone, highly-paid player not on the team you root for is on the shelf, doesn’t that diminish the overall quality of product on the field? Which also means less entertainment value for the viewing audience? Would you be happy only watching your team playing AAAA/AAA teams?

If there even is a season, it will be so abbreviated as to make a postseason virtually pointless. At least it can be an opportunity for the perpetually wounded to get some time off. Honestly, they could play meaningless games in August and September and we would just be happy to watch sports again. Don’t be surprised if the whole thing falls by the wayside. The precedent is doing everything he can to make this worse than it has to be so he can be on TV every day telling us how great of a job he is doing. Complete hogwash.

Such a shame but sooo glad the Dodgers didnt jump on Stanton when he was avaliable even tho I thought they should go get the homegrown smasher. Why did the yanks trade for him, they proved last season that they dont need him to win. Hes so strong and muscular but very fragile keeps having lower half injuries and those could be career nagging injuries. So far that 13 yr contract is not looking so good as he is only gonna get older and more injury prone.

Great for him ……not so good for the Yankees. Those long contracts are bad for baseball and fans who have to pay through higher price tickets.

Ticket prices have little to nothing to do with contracts – granted, a team with more revenue gives out more big contracts, BUT, they don’t give out contracts as a justification for raising ticket prices.

Teams hire smart people to study and project maximum revenues.

Example: you may sell every ticket (40k units) an avg price including concessions of $20 per head. Thats 800k revenue. But, expenses to handle 40k guests may cost you 80k. Net is 720k for the game.

Or, you sell 30k tickets at $30 per head. That’s 900k revenue, and expenses drop to 60k. Now you realize a net of $840k.

They’ve invest money in learning where the maximum yield on the curve is, which may not coincide with selling the most tickets.

Until people stop paying and the yield curve shifts, ticket prices will remain high.

You’re not all that familiar with Yankee ticket prices are you lol?

Everything second level infield is 325 face.

The close ones are 900 each.

          Its beyond ridiculous.

That’s because people will pay it, not because it’s necessary to cover the costos contracts. If NYY slashed payroll to $60mm next year, ticket prices would not go down.

@fivetwos I think AtlSoxFan knows what he’s talking about. The pricing is ridiculous for you and I but there are people willing to pay that amount. You see all those empty seats behind YS homeplate? Sure they could lower prices and fill those seats but they don’t have to. The make the same amount of money by not selling all of them out. The old YS capacity was 57.5 k. The new one is 54.2 k. That is by design to make more money. than the old.

Yes Mr. Atlanta does NOT understand economics. Being retired at 55 years old and a financial advisor, if ticket prices were lower more young people would be at the games and MLB would not be so worried about the future of the game. I know many many many people who have stopped going to games because the price of the tickets. If the owners pay a higher price for salaries than what they take in revenue from tv and tickets they will raise the ticket prices rather than take the loss. It is just like restaurants, after the $15 per hour was enacted for their employees, raising price and passing the cost on to the customers.

Baseball does not have popularity it once had. As baby boomers move from working to social security and their disposable income drops, it will be interesting to see what happens to attendance and revenue. Maybe that’s why MLB is trying so hard to speed up the games and make changes to increase its popularity.

Theres an amazing all you can eat spread with lobster, crab legs, shrimp, lamb, prime rib, oysters and every other thing you can imagine.

They are all hanging out in there. Not at all worth 900 a pop to the average person, but it’s all NY corporate types.

What amazes me are the seats that arent all that close to the field for 325 each. They are for the most part sold out on a full season basis.
