White Sox Sign Zach Putnam

By Jeff Todd | March 3, 2020 at 11:26am CDT

The White Sox have inked righty Zach Putnam to a minor-league pact, the club informed reporters including Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times (via Twitter). He’ll head to the minors side of camp.

It has been a while since we’ve heard from Putnam. The 32-year-old was sidelined in 2018 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. His attempted return last year was thwarted by a hamstring injury.

Putnam was quite an effective relief pitcher for the South Siders before the injuries intervened. Over 139 1/3 frames with the organization, accumulated between 2014 and 2017, he worked to a 2.71 ERA while carrying 9.6 K/9 against 3.6 BB/9 along with a 47.6% groundball rate.

Low-risk, decent reward signing. I want them to sign McHugh, though. Could really boost their BP and even serve as a spot starter if needed.

Agree McHugh would be good on an incentive based deal. Under the impression that his medical reports must not look that good or he would have been signed already. But all else equal, grab another guy and put him in the pool of injury recovery candidates who might help at some point mid season.

Agreed. McHugh also has starting experience which would add to the depth in case the back end of the rotation falters. Nice insurance plan to Gio Gonzalez now that he’s up there on age.

But also it was Colin McHugh who went off on the White Sox for their handling of the Eloy Jimenez situation, so I’m willing to bet ownership passed on him because of it.

I remember a few years ago when somebody would get on base against him, i’d say Zach is putnam on base again…. IK it’s dumb.

Maybe not, but not much to lose by taking a chance that he stays healthy. If he does, he could really help the club.

This would have been bigger news if it was Seth Putnam.

Sox should re-sign sinkerballing Bob Locker and call it an offseason.

King-He is 81 years old which is a tad too long to be out of the game.
I remember him too though so we may be a tad too old to be in the game.

Been a while since I’ve seen that name. Forgot all about him.

Most likely all he’s going to be is just an arm to bring up from AAA when one of their relievers gets injured. If he amounts to anything more than that, all the better.

Costs a lot less than Gerrit Cole, but probably has less upside.
