Giants Sign Chris Herrmann

By George Miller | July 25, 2020 at 3:56pm CDT

The Giants have signed catcher Chris Herrmann to a minor-league contract, according to Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group. He’ll be added to the Giants’ 60-man player pool and will join the three-player taxi squad.

Herrmann spent Spring Training with the Rays, signing on with Tampa in January on a minor-league deal. But with a flurry of other catchers included in the Rays’ 60-player pool, Herrmann seemed unlikely to climb the depth chart for playing time, and requested his release a week ago. He played with the Athletics last year, appearing in 30 games.

The 32-year-old brings some versatility to the table and has demonstrated offensive capability in the past, though the last couple of seasons haven’t been so kind to Herrmann at the dish. In addition to suiting up behind the plate, Herrmann has played first base and both corner outfield positions, which fits in well with the Giants’ mix-and-match lineup formation.

For his career, he’s the owner of a .205/.282/.344 batting line, though he’s had success in stints with the Diamondbacks and Mariners. He managed an .845 OPS in 56 games with the D-Backs in 2016 and looked pretty good in 30 games with the Mariners in 2018.

Finally. Boy, that took long enough. I wonder what the deal is with Russell Martin?

He’s aging and probably doesn’t want to come out of retirement in a shortened season to play for an uncompetitive team

Sure, explain how signing Chris Herrmann to a Minor League contract makes the whole organization a mess?

Do any of you people even watch Giants baseball. I do. And It’s hard to overstate how bad this team is. To call the organization a ‘Mess’ is accurate.

Sabean and Evans BURIED this franchise. And with the lost year of organizational development because of Covid, they are 3 years away from team that finishes above .500 It’s a total trainwreck

What is wrong with the talent in the Farm System?

Burying a franchise idk about that, I’m a fan believe in what’s happening by building farm riding out contracts waiting for prospects etc.. This team during the first few games looks like a little league team. I’d love to blame everything that’s happened, but it just seems super sloppy and not that professional. The bullpen management is not working. Again I’m a giants fan but this shortened 60 game season maybe the longest one in the last few years for us.

Buried a franchise by winning three World Series? A total train wreck? I guess tone trolling is tone trolling, but if you can’t see what the Giants are doing, I guess you don’t understand baseball.

@steph, I understand what Farhan is doing. With the greatly improved farm and soon-to-be out of a number of albatross contracts situation, there’s hope in 2022, ‘23, ‘ 24 and beyond. I will say tho, the first few games have been brutal, even the win yesterday. Not sure about Kapler at this point…..he doesn’t seem to understand how to put a roster together and strategize well. Time will tell. I’m glad this season will be short……as the agony will be short lived for 2020 (Giants’ baseball strictly speaking….)

And the Dodgers look to be good through 2099. Who knew the Giants’s ownership would’ve become Charlie Finley after winning three WS.

This guy’s baseball card doesn’t show a whole lot to be excited about. Is he really any better than the part-timers they already have on the roster?

Heinemann is playing today and this is his 6th MLB game. Per BBRef Tromp played his debut yesterday. Hermann is a major league catcher. There’s such a shortage catchers don’t need to hit for a rebuilding team.

Yep there is a major lack of catching talent these days and so a guy like this is bound to get in some games.

I stand corrected. But I follow the game closely and I’ve barely heard of Brantly. Turns out he’s had 67 at bats in the bigs since 2013. So my point stands.

Herrmann is a complete waste of a roster space, has NEVER hit—despite what the writer says—and makes me question some of the choices the FO is making. I’d rather give Tromp a chance than Herrmann. But I do trust, that in the long run, Farhan knows what he ‘d doing.

Yeah, headed for. It’s going to get much worse than it’s been. They haven’t even picked higher than 10th during Zaidi’s tenure. I think a string of Top 5 picks is coming for them.

If a “string” is one or two, then maybe, but I think Z will have a solid core put together faster than all the Giants detractors
He’s still strapped with the Evans’ bad contracts, but has begun to unearth some decent young players and restock the farm
He just needs a year to see what he’s got, this year’s just extremely extended spring training
They’ll be fine in a couple seasons without needing half a decade’s worth of top 10 or 5 picks, Z’s good enough to steal them from other teams

To which Giants fans will – or should – say, bring it on. A succession of high draft picks and a bunch of money coming off the wage bill. Terrific!
