Brewers Outright Ray Black

By Mark Polishuk | March 30, 2021 at 1:45pm CDT

The Brewers have outrighted right-hander Ray Black off their 40-man roster, the team announced.  Black has cleared waivers and will report to the team’s alternate training site.

Black has been bothered by elbow inflammation for much of the spring, which cost him a chance at winning a job in Milwaukee’s Opening Day bullpen.  Since Black is out of minor league options, a trip through the waiver wire was necessary for the Brewers to remove him from the 40-man.

Injuries have been a recurring problem for Black, beginning with a shoulder surgery that delayed the start of his pro career for almost two years after being drafted by the Giants as a seventh-rounder in 2011.  A strained right rotator cuff kept Black on the injured list for much of 2020, and he appeared in only three games for the Brew Crew last season.

The hard-throwing righty has a strong 30.2% strikeout rate over his 42 1/3 career MLB innings, but also a 5.53 ERA and a very subpar 12.3% walk rate.  Milwaukee acquired Black as part of the Drew Pomeranz/Mauricio Dubon trade with the Giants in 2019.

I’d no doubt do that trade again as Pomeranz was dominate for that half season w/ the Crew where they were in desperate need of bullpen help.

He didn’t call the season a success for the team, he said Pom was really good down the stretch.

Stud? More like a decent starting caliber player. He projects more along the lines of a Marwin Gonzalez than Tatis or Lindor. Btw those two are actual studs.

Hey Underdog, don’t people take a dump on the street in San Fran? Is that what you people in California call a bathroom?

At least we don’t have to worry at all about people raiding and looting Walmarts.

This poor guy…watched him hit 100 mph with his fastball and get much ballyhooed as a “if he could just stay healthy” player with the Giants for years. It’s clear that he’s never going to be healthy.

Did you even read the post? The OP was being sarcastic suggesting the Giants got a deal since we gave away Pomeranz and Dubon for a guy who is now outrighted and broken goods. I guess that speaks to the SFO school system. BTW — In Wisconsin we define success as making the playoffs for the past 3 consecutive season. A place the Giants have visited since 2016. (Not even last year when just about everyone got in. Except the Giants.)
