Blue Jays Place Ross Stripling, Jordan Romano On 10-Day IL

By Connor Byrne | April 15, 2021 at 6:40pm CDT

The injuries continue to pile up for the Blue Jays, who announced that they’ve placed right-handers Ross Stripling and Jordan Romano on the 10-day injured list. The team recalled lefty Anthony Kay and righty Joel Payamps to take the open roster spots.

There is no word on how much time Stripling and Romano will miss, but the fact that they’re dealing with arm injuries is certainly cause for concern. Stripling has a flexor strain, while Romano has ulnar neuritis.

Stripling has been part of the Blue Jays’ rotation this season, though he has slumped to a 7.55 ERA with 13 hits allowed over 8 1/3 innings and two starts. So far, it’s the second straight tough year for Stripling, formerly a useful swingman with the Dodgers who could only muster a 5.84 ERA in 49 1/3 innings between Los Angeles and Toronto in 2020.

The loss of Romano is another serious blow to a Jays bullpen that saw fellow late-game arm Julian Merryweather go to the IL on Wednesday with an oblique strain. Kirby Yates was supposed to be Toronto’s closer this season, but he went down before it began on account of Tommy John surgery, which immediately made Romano and Merryweather logical options to save games. Merryweather won the role, but despite control problems (three walks in 3 1/3 innings), Romano has still only allowed one run and totaled four strikeouts.

I like both of their arms but at this rate an Anthony Castro – Joel Payamps back end of the bullpen isn’t inspring too much confidence. Hopefully the lineup is able to keep the leads fairly large lol.

@terry SSS (small sample size) … Castro and Payamps definitely does not inspire confidence

Bigg we can make that argument for nearly every guy. Fact is the bullpen work by the Jays so far has been excellent, and that includes Castro and Payamps.

Rengilfo is in the minor leagues. And it’s not about Joc and Strip. Angels were also getting Andy Pages who is by most sources a top 5 prospect in a strong Dodgers farm. Joc was a massive piece of a world series champion. Dodgers are just fine with how that deal ended up.

The Dodgers are stupid because they wound up with Bauer and Betts instead of Ryu and Maeda?

We have no idea what the trade was whatsoever

I do agree many Dodger fans over-rated Joc and especially Strip when here, as they still do with Pollock today …..but I think its telling from the FO that those were the guys to be {potentially} dealt.

We handled Strip w Baby gloves while here and he really rode the coattails of that 2018 first half for as long as he could – Loved the day we got Kendall for him and I’m sure Andrew did too

Well, we may see the start of Simeon Woods Richardson and Alex Manoah major league careers fairly soon if this keeps up. I mean, is Dolis the only bullpen piece left that started the season?

Manoah wouldn’t be a bad callup for the bullpen. Although they’d have 40-man roster issues if they do. Tice, Bergen and Luciano most likely they will get the call.

no need to rush Manoah if just to use him in the pen. if it’s still sputtering a month from now then maybe.

No need to rush? Is he scared? At least I justified not bringing him up with the 40-man argument. Yours is coddling adults and taking away a big paycheck from him. Good call.

Totally agree. See if the Jays can weather the storm for now. Keep him stretched out as a starter once the minor season starts. Have to remember the guy has never pitched above short season Vancouver. Let him get some innings under his belt at AA or wherever they put him once the minors start. Too good of an asset to risk moving to fast and messing with his head. He could be just what the rotation needs come August.

This team has been able to tread water so far…but they’re in danger of collapse. They need Ray and Matz to continue to be solid behind Ryu. Matters more than ever now, considering the bullpen is gonna be trash until Romano and Merryweather get back. On top of that, you’re asking two kids (Vladdy and Bo) to carry the lineup, since Springer probably won’t play this year. I believe in those two, but it’s a lot of pressure.

The bullpen has had to work a fair bit. Too bad there wasn’t a durable innings eater with a fresh Cy Young award in free agency. Shucks.

Justifying the pitchers dropping like flies because mini-Jays fans don’t like the way Bauer tweets.

What is the most likely reason for this onslaught of injuries:

    A. Covid schedules
    B. Guys being overworked by the team
    C. Guys overworking themselves
    D. Bad luck
    E. All of the above

If you answered ‘E’ then you are correct. Stop arguing about it because there’s not one person or factor to blame and it’s really tired reading every time this happens to a team, which is a lot.

Merryweather and Pearson were certainly known injury risks too.

And they remade the bullpen into a bunch of guys who throw in the upper 90s. Guys who throw in the upper 90s tend to hurt their arms.

It’s tough when injuries pile up so much. That is where elite mgmt needs to step up. Unfortunately the Alphonse and Gastonne show of the BlueJays executive team doesn’t have the stones to try and fix this.

When Shapiro and Atkins are intentionally making decisions like keeping Roark, ignoring medicals re Yates, trading for guys like Stripling, resigning Robbie Ray who stinks all the fans can do is pray for divine help because help isn’t coming through the leadership.
