Injury Notes: Buxton, Mets, A’s, Cards

By Connor Byrne | May 24, 2021 at 9:34pm CDT

Twins center fielder Byron Buxton could be ready for a rehab assignment near the end of the week, manager Rocco Baldelli told Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press and other reporters. Buxton has been out since May 7 with a hip strain, the latest of an unfortunate number of injuries he has dealt with since his career began in 2015. The 27-year-old was off to a jaw-dropping start this season with a .370/.408/.772 line, nine home runs and five stolen bases in 98 plate appearances before his IL placement, making him the brightest spot on a Minnesota team that has surprisingly gone from contender to calamity.

  • The Mets didn’t need another injury to an outfielder, but they got one Monday: Johneshwy Fargas departed their game against the Rockies with a left AC joint sprain, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com was among those to report. The team just promoted Fargas a week ago when it placed fellow outfielder Michael Conforto on the injured list (he’ll be out until late June with a hamstring strain), and Fargas has since been its go-to option in center. The 26-year-old has fared well with a .286/.286/.524 line in 22 plate appearances, but he may now be on his way to the IL. The Mets’ outfield is already without Conforto, Brandon Nimmo, Kevin Pillar and Albert Almora Jr.
  • Athletics left-hander Jesus Luzardo is going on a Triple-A rehab start Thursday and looks to be closing in on a return to the big league club, per Martin Gallegos of MLB.com. The question is whether Luzardo, who fractured his left hand in a video game-related accident at the beginning of the month, will start or relieve when he returns. The promising 23-year-old got off to a rocky start this season with a 5.79 ERA in 28 innings prior to landing on the IL.
  • Cardinals southpaw reliever Andrew Miller will begin a rehab stint Tuesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat tweets. St. Louis will have a better idea of a return date later this week. The Cardinals have gone since April 29 without Miller, whom they sent to the IL with a right foot issue. The once-marvelous Miller, 36, got off to a tough start this year with 7 1/3 innings of 12-hit, seven-run pitching and eight strikeouts against four walks before going on the IL.

Even when fully healthy, the Mets do not EASILY win the division. No matter what, the Mets and Braves will always be close and either team could win. Both very talented. Even the Phillies can make it to the playoffs if they can figure out their CF and bullpen issues and if the Nationals can have their veterans play well they can make it, too. And crazy enough, just last year the Marlins made it. I’m telling you this entire division is full of talent they just need to stay healthy.

@MetsFan22 Uh, when the Mets were healthier this season, they didn’t look impressive…except when they played the juggernaut O’s and D-Backs. In fact, their best game against the Marlins was with this roster. Prior to that, the only win the Mets had against the Marlins was via Ron Kulpa incorrectly rewarding Conforto for leaning into one in the strikezone.

And sorry, but the Marlins lost 2/3rds of their roster last year and played strong through 60 games. The Mets still haven’t lost as many as the Marlins did last year, and the Mets are struggling through 40 games…even when they had nearly their entire roster.

Just stop already with your excuses. They’re getting tired…especially when every other NL East team is dealing with key injuries…and you look for excuses every year.

And you were looking for excuses before this wave of injuries when you were blaming Rojas for the Mets ineptitude prior to the series with the O’s and D-Backs.

You didn’t lose as much value last year as we did this year just stop. Losing guys with career negative war isn’t the same as losing 7 legit hitters in our lineup. 4 legit pitchers our best RP and other important bullpen and bench pieces! Marlins didn’t come close to that! They may have lost some important players but what’s happening to the Mets hasn’t really been seen in a long time. Not even the 2017 Yankees…. the Mets were 5 games over 500 last time they were healthy… on their way to play and east schedule (marlins Rockies). They also played the Braves and another team but they aren’t bad like marlins and Rockies. So yes they could have been like 7-10 games over rn instead of 1!

Keep saying that the Mets losses were more valuable than the Marlins losses last year. Maybe another homer like you will believe it.

Legit pitchers? Really? It seems that our pitchers are kind of respected and feared around the league. You may have heard of them…even through the fictional Mets Hyperbole you believe in because one of your bedtime story tellers in Ron Darling really respects the Marlins pitchers.

And you were 5 games over after feasting on the garbage O’s and D-Backs. Against the rest of us, the Mets have not fared well. You sure as heck haven’t looked good against the Marlins at all since the Marlins got their players back last year.

Keep telling yourself what you need to hear and keep listening to that Mets Hyperbole. If that is what makes you happy, enjoy. But at some point, you’re going to have to come out of that fantasy world of make-believe.

See how they looked against the D-Backs and O’s versus how they looked against every other team on their schedule.

As a Marlins fan, I can tell you that healthy or not, they didn’t impress us in either series. In fact, this roster looked better against the Marlins than their healthy one…and that’s because our players very likely didn’t have full scouting reports on some of the guys that burned them in the Mets 1 real win against the Marlins this year.

How is it silly when here’s the fact.

With your healthy team, you played us the first time, and the “win” was on Ron Kulpa’s mistake.

With this roster, you got a real win.

The Mets loss all of the other games against the Marlins – healthy of not..

Cameron Maybin is off to an ATROCIOUS start! No hits in 19 at-bats, with 11 strikeouts?

Even the sabermetrics and algorithms think he sucks at -0.4 WAR already, in just 19 at-bats.

What’s Puig doing? Call up Bauer’s girlfriend and get Puig signed!

Because I keep getting banned, but I love everybody and have to remind everybody that emotions aren’t allowed in baseball — only Bill James-approved statistics, exit velocities, spin rates, and other abbreviations that we have no idea how to calculate. Wait until baseball cards have UZR and fWAR on the back.

Couldn’t Bill James’ parents have let him play with toys like normal children? He’s like Egon (Harold Ramis) in Ghostbusters II:

“I had a Slinky, but I straightened it.”

If only Bill James and Billy Beane had emotions when they were growing up, baseball would have still been a great game.

Walk to a mirror and say the Mets aren’t as good as you thought. Stop making excuses. Your team plays in one of the worst divisions in baseball. Your team looks good in a bad division. You can’t lose to bad teams no matter how many guys are on the shelf. No will, no way, no wins.

Blue Jays are over .500 with injuries playing in a much superior division. Rays and Yankees too. Dodgers and Padres dealing with lots of injuries playing in the best division in the NL, if not, in baseball. Your Mets play in the glorified minor leagues in the NL East. Be thankful.
