Braves Designate Ender Inciarte For Assignment

By TC Zencka | July 24, 2021 at 2:26pm CDT

The Braves have reinstated Ender Inciarte from the injured list and designated him for assignment, per Gabe Burns of Baseball America (via Twitter).

This was Inciarte’s sixth season in Atlanta, but he slashes just .215/.276/.316 in 89 plate appearances. He missed time with a strained hamstring and then, more recently, was placed on the COVID-related injured list.

Given the Braves’ current need in the outfield, it certainly speaks volumes to DFA Inciarte at this time. That said, given his $8.7MM contract for this season, there’s a pretty good chance he makes it through waivers and could remain in the organization. Atlanta holds a $9MM club option for Inciarte next season.

I’m guessing the Braves are planning to be buyers rather than sellers with this move. Making room to add.

Why? 5 games back with 7 days left to the trade deadline, with the phillies, Mets, and Brewers coming up… I think this move is more making roster space in hopes to add anyone to the roster that can do better than Ender (low bar) and cutting the bad fat away from the team

I am guessing the Braves are going be sellers with this move. As they would have tried to send his salary to some other team to off set brining back money on a bad contract mixed with a good pick up

I think the Braves are going to likely be very slight buyers at the deadline. I’m not sure if they should be or not but this division is a joke. The Braves really should be in first place. The Braves have outscored their opponents by 8 more runs than the first place Mets have outscored theirs. They call that “run differential” and typically the best teams have the best run differential. Even the 2nd place Phillies run differential is -12. They are really lucky to be a 2nd place team even though they have been outscored by their opponents. The Braves run differential is +26 which makes them the best in the division in that regard. The most ridiculous thing going on in the MLB standings right now is the Yankees being ahead of the Blue Jays in the AL East. The Yankees have a +5 run differential and are in 3rd place. Toronto has a +80 run differential and are in 4th place. +5 isn’t super odd for a 3rd place team like the Yankees. Heck, the Phillies are a 2nd place team at -12. +80 is insane for a 4th place team. The Toronto Blue Jays are literally the best 4th place team I have ever seen. They should pass the Yankees with ease. They should actually be in 2nd place. Only the +88 Rays outscore their opponents more. The Rays should be in 1st place and the Blue Jays should be ahead of both the Yankees and the Red Sox. In the Braves NL East division the Phillies should be in 3rd place and the Mets should actually be in 2nd behind the Braves. The NL East is a bad division but the Braves outscore their opponents more than anyone else in that division. If you were to redo this season over and over again, the Braves would be in first place right now most of the time. The Mets are very catchable. But it’s not because the Braves are great. It’s because the Braves are pretty good and the Mets really aren’t as good as the Braves. The Phillies are just plain bad. Good teams don’t allow more runs than they score. The best teams allow the fewest runs while scoring the most. Whichever team does the best overall combination of that is at the very least the most talented team in the division. The Braves are that team in their NL East division. I don’t think this team goes all the way. I don’t think we should trade the farm either but when you think about all that… Then you consider the fact that d’Arnaud, Ynoa and Anderson are about to come back to give us a rotation of Smyly, Fried, Ynoa, Anderson and Morton… There is no reason to give up. The Braves could easily win this division because they are the best overall team.

I don’t see Atlanta be able to stay in the chase with the bull pen they have. You take a lead than the bullpen gives it up. Will Smith has not been what the giants had that pitcher never arrived.

I am a die hard Braves fan from the days of Dale Murphy but I would almost be okay with Atlanta getting behind more in the division and allows Kyle Wright; Sean Newcomb (he was amazing a few seasons ago ) Christian Pache had 2 months of non stress baseball to see what the 2022 Braves team might have.

Two worst comments on this thread, both by Benjamin. They won’t be Sellers, nor should they be, the Mets are a team that can be caught. Yes, the Braves bullpen is wretched. Thus, they need to go get 2 relievers at the trade deadline.

But, the worst comment…you want to see the Braves lose more so we can see more of Wright and Newcomb??? Wright will probably be moved at the deadline. A deal like Kolby Allard for Chris Martin could be on the horizon. Newcomb is toast. He will not be in Atlanta next year…and he was never great for Atlanta. He had a half a year of being a good starter and then he totally blew up in the 2nd half. He had a decent mid 3’s in ERA a couple of years after that, in a season where spent a good spell at AAA (which is hardly “great”). But we are now a few years from that. He’s done.

Braves are not the best overall team. Maybe if they still had Acuna, Ozuna and their ace, but they don’t. Mets will eventually get back Carasaco, Lindor and Syndergaard. Pretty sure they are more valuable than getting back d’Arnauld.(who will only get hurt again). If the Braves really were a better team, they would already be in first place.

Dude the Braves just went 1-2 over a 3 game span and only allowed 2 runs. This team is in desperate need for bull pen help yes, but it doesn’t matter who you at to the bullpen with this offense. They are desperate for 2 outfielders with high contact rate and some thump right now or since ozuna went down really(even though he was having a down year) I love this team but this lineup outside of FF, Ozzie, and occasionally DS and AR is a AAAA lineup at best. 2 hitter and 2 arms and hope to get hot if we make the post season. These guys can beat up on a bad pitcher and skew the numbers. They’ve score 2 or fewer runs in 30 games. Thats not gonna win you very much.

I always liked the guy. He’s obviously had two bad years, but at age 30, there is a decent chance that a ticket out of Atlanta is needed. He could be in quit-mode due to Pache arriving, and then not getting his job back even after Pache stumbled.

Looks like he can run a bit too…whoops…got nabbed 14(!) times in ’18. Man. Gotta wonder if Cash would pick him up if he could get him for $0.00 like Odor.

Ender isn’t fast, but he reads the ball and positions himself as good as any other outfielder. He’s also a good lefty bat with surprising pop, and when he’s right, he is a tough out. Unfortunately, he hasn’t had consistency because of injuries. If healthy, I’m sure he could still hit .260 with 15 HR in a full season, specially at Fenway. His best days are over, but he could be a 4th outfielder.

I would bet against Bryant going to Atlanta this year just too many holes in the bullpen Acuna out for the year won’t make a lot of sense. Atlanta’s window to compete is not closing this season so no need to go for it and give up what is needed to get him.

I believe Rizzo is only in Atlanta should the Braves not re sign Freddy freeman.

I would really like to get Merrifield. With him and Acuna at the top of the line up next year, you not only have guys getting on but they could have 100 SB between them. Merrifield would have to play left as he is average in the outfield. Second is his spot. That would be a great add

Snit doesn’t emphasize SB and Whit’s speed would be a waste. Not saying he wouldn’t run, but I doubt he’d run as much, especially if you have someone like Freddie, Albies another power hitter, hitting behind you. KC’s lineup emphasizes small ball partially because of their large field dimensions that Truist is not. Just a theory, but unless Whit takes over SS (doubt it), he’s not a perfect fit and worth the king’s ransom Dayton would demand.

You are right about Snit and the Braves team philosophy. I am hoping Snit is gone. Braves are a swing for the fence team and waste good talent. I been a fan over 40 years and they are about as boring as any team around. It’s strikeout or HR philosophy. They are interesting for that 1 inning then the bullpen ends it

My opinion makes no sense to get Bryant as the Braves have bull pen issues. If the bull pen was better maybe but makes no sense in giving up future pieces with Acuna out and the bull pen going cough the lead up.

I think selling and letting some younger guys have a go in the majors would be a smart plan with a horrible bullpen and Acuna out for the year.

I would give Kyle Wright the rest of the year to start and see what he turns in. Both Glavine and Smotlz were horrible early in career. Put Pache in center and see if this two are long term pieces or not.

are either player mlb ready at this point (am asking because i don’t really follow atl milb i barely have time to follow my own lol) if you bring them guys up to soon and they get overwhelmed and lose there confidence and start thinking they can’t play at the mlb level. i’ve seen it a lot team x brings up player y too soon and player y losses his confidence and fizzles out

No, neither are really ready for the Majors. Pache has a GG type of glove, but the bat isn’t there. Wright, oof, I think they just rushed him too much already.

I see Yankee pinstripes in Ender’s very near future.

He’s just going back to Gwinnett, no doubt. Maybe someone gets called up, maybe not. Could care less.

I remember suggesting JBJ for Ender at the start of 2020. The Braves would get an upgrade for 2020, and Pache would start in 2021, with some serious $$$ savings. The RS would downgrade slightly for 2020, but have a starting CF for 2021, which we lacked.

Still think it was a great match, but didn’t age particularly well.

How about making a deal with Arizona for Madbum? Three years of control at $17 mil per year. Morton is making $15 mil this year.

Ozuna has thrown a wrench in everything. We don’t know what’s going to happen with him. So do we have to pay him or is his contract going to be voided? Has a lot to do with how much we can give Freddie. They are talking like it could be next year before that is settled. Once Ender’s back got hurt he was done.

We need a left fielder (Adam D is cheap). Bullpen help, everybody is looking. Bench bat and another starter wouldn’t hurt.
