Cardinals Announce Wild Card Roster

By Mark Polishuk | October 6, 2021 at 12:32pm CDT

The Cardinals have announced their roster for tonight’s showdown with the Dodgers in the NL wild card game.  Adam Wainwright has already been announced as the starting pitcher, one of 12 pitchers the Cards will carry along with 14 position players.

Right-handed pitchers

  • Jack Flaherty
  • Giovanny Gallegos
  • Luis Garcia
  • Dakota Hudson
  • Miles Mikolas
  • Alex Reyes
  • Adam Wainwright
  • Kodi Whitley

Left-handed pitchers

  • Genesis Cabrera
  • Kwang Hyun Kim
  • T.J. McFarland
  • Andrew Miller

Catchers

  • Andrew Knizner
  • Yadier Molina

Infielders

  • Nolan Arenado
  • Matt Carpenter
  • Paul DeJong
  • Tommy Edman
  • Paul Goldschmidt
  • Jose Rondon
  • Edmundo Sosa
  • Juan Yepez

Outfielders

  • Harrison Bader
  • Dylan Carlson
  • Lars Nootbaar
  • Tyler O’Neill

Of the Cardinals’ regular starting pitchers, Jon Lester, J.A. Happ and Jake Woodford weren’t included on the roster — none surprising omissions due to the one-game nature of the playoff.  Mikolas, Hudson, and Flaherty are there to provide some level of depth if Wainwright has to make an early exit from the game.  Of the position players, Yepez is the most intriguing name, as the 23-year-old has posted big numbers in Triple-A this season but has never appeared in a Major League game.

Quick question—as they are not on the roster and not on the DL are players like Lester, Happ, etc allowed to be in the dugout tonight? I guess I could watch and see but if anyone knows, please chime in.

Well, in the playoffs we have played super well against the super team. I don’t know who will win tonight, but it will be a good game. Let’s go Cards.

Cards have nothing to lose. Great finish to the season no matter what happens tonight. But what the hell, believe in Devil Magic one more time. Let’s go Cards!

They can be in dugout, if they paid the airfare.

They ought to make the wildcard teams have the starters they need for the next round on the wildcard rosters. That way you can’t load up on RPs.

Nah why make a game less exciting by having players who will not even make an appearance due to wanting to be pedantic about roster configuration. MLB made the game for rating purposes.

How many RPs do you think they’ll use in 1 game?

5-6 usually if you’ve watched playoff baseball in the last couple years. See how mad max got taken out of the 5th inning.

Hey look at that. They used 5 RP and the game isn’t over yet. Man it’s scary how I predict like everything.

Carpenter is a Dodger plant…only there to get a clutch strikeout.

Yes. Have you seen him hit .118 the last 2 months of the season with a 27% K rate?

Carpenter is wasting a roster space. However, just by saying that, he will probably hit a pinch hit home run, just because things like that happens in baseball.
          Go Cards!

What if the game goes 19 innings and Waino goes out after 5 keysox?

Nootbar is a USC product. Would be cool to see him get a big hit but honestly you can talk about past and future and who could get a big hit all you want but honestly I wouldn’t care if Matt Carpenter bunted down to 3rd with 2 out and score Juan Yepez to take the lead late. Just win the damn game.

I sure hope the folks at MLB know, or postseason extra innings could get really confusing.

Good thing they don’t have the strike zone box on the screen the whole hole. Why let the fans see how bad Joe west strike zone is tonight. And don’t give me the “you know where the strike zone is” argument. You don’t know any better than Joe west you need the box on the screen every pitch. It’s not debatable.

The simple fact that Matt Carpenter made the playoff roster after being left off in the past due to declining and poor play tells you how much this team lacks depth.
