Giants Sign Jon Duplantier To Minors Deal

By TC Zencka | December 4, 2021 at 1:44pm CDT

The Giants have signed right-handers Jon Duplantier and Gray Fenter to a minor league contracts, per MLB.com.

There is, of course a transactions freeze for members of the Players’ Union, but that does not preclude clubs from offering minor league contracts. They cannot, however, incentivize those contracts with offers to spring training or give 40-man roster spots. When the lockout ends, Duplantier is likely to receive an invitation to spring workouts with the Giants.

Duplantier was once a top prospect in the Diamondbacks organizations. The bespectacled 27-year-old had a solid debut in 2019 for Arizona, appearing 15 times (3 starts) and tossing 36 2/3 innings with a 4.42 ERA/3.95 FIP. He has struggled to stay healthy since then, logging just 21 combined innings in Triple-A and the Majors in the two seasons.

Fenter, 25, has yet to make his Major League debut. The right-hander was drated in the seventh round by the Orioles in the 2015 draft. He pitched last season for Bowie in Double-A, pitching o a 5.47 ERA in 77 1/3 innings over 21 appearances (13 starts).

I don’t believe Duplantier was ever a top-, medium- or lower-level prospect with the Yankees.

Baseball Reference doesn’t remember him with the Yankees either.

I don’t think so either. But why are we talking about that?

…and B-R’s “memory” is much better than mine. It looks to have been corrected.

Pretty amazing to watch Farhan treat the off-season like a winter baseball draft. Unlike the player draft in June, these pickups are similar to the low picks in the lower NFL and NBA draft where players are close to being talented and ready enough to play in the league. If they don’t pan out, it costs almost nothing and the Org moves on.

Perhaps a bullpen option if several get hurt?
His BB/9 in the 2019 minor league season was 6.5 though had a 10.5 SO/9
A guy like him reminds me of Tyler Beede. Don’t have a lot of faith in Beede to ever breakout but it’s possible they see something in Duplantier that they can fix

Dupe is a great depth signing; I wanted the Pads to do this exact deal and sign him to El Paso. Alas, FZ beat us to it.

You’ll see if Beede breaks out this year with the giants .. since he’s out of options. Otherwise it’ll be with another team!

I’m not about to claim that I could do this job well or even better than TC but I sure as hell can Google a player’s name and see that he never spent a second in the Yankees organization.

Zaidi woke up long enough from snoozing to try to make fans think he was doing something to make the 2022 Giants a better team. Lol

Do not feed the troll, all he does is grief the Bay Area fans for some strange reason. This TG guy lives on every SF post, super strange. Hes never contributed one iota of pertinent info on any Padre post.

Not gonna lie, I think it’s funny and I lol everytime I see TG’s standard comment. And I’m a diehard giants fan of 30+ years. It’s a golden one liner and the fact it irritates everyone so much makes it even funnier to me. TG shows pure dedication to his troll-craft, even when the giants win the division via 107 dubs. Gotta respect that competitive fire in a 162 game season.

The irony is it’s the Padres who hilariously fail to buy a winning team every year.

        The Padres. Lol

I had already predicted Giants over Blue Jays in 2022 but this move makes it a sweep.

It would be cool if someone signed Correa to a 350 million dollar minor league contract.
