Giants Promote David Villar

By James Hicks | July 4, 2022 at 3:35pm CDT

3:35PM: The Giants have officially selected Villar’s contract.  Right-hander Yunior Marte was optioned to Triple-A yesterday, creating an open 26-man roster spot.

12:31PM: As first reported by Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Giants prospect David Villar is in Phoenix and will be activated ahead of today’s game against the Diamondbacks. Villar, who’s primarily played third base in the minors but has some positional versatility, has logged a .284/.409/.633 triple-slash — and 21 home runs — in 281 trips to the plate for Triple-A Sacramento so far this year.

It isn’t yet clear what position Villar will play in his first taste of the majors, but with both Thairo Estrada and Brandon Crawford on the IL and Evan Longoria entrenched at third, he’ll most likely slot in at second for the time being. He’s played 98 innings at the position, all of them this year.

An unheralded 11th-round pick out of the University of South Florida in the 2018 amateur draft, Villar hasn’t drawn a lot of prospect fanfare but has hit his way onto the big-league radar. While his 2022 performance in Triple-A has taken him to new heights, he showed significant power last year as well, hitting 20 homers at Double-A Richmond en route to a .275/.374/.507 overall line.

He impressed in spring training and I’m excited to see if his arrival and performance will give the team a much needed boost. Because if the current level of play continues you can expect the Giants won’t make the playoffs.

If the current level of “play” continues, MLB will be forced to disband our beloved franchise.

Because baseball is a game where you hit the ball and catch the ball and the Giants have simply stopped doing both of those things.

Hopefully his numbers and defense in the minors will transition into something good with the Giants. Pavlovic sees a lot of good things in Villar.

As bad as they’ve been as of late, it’s hard to believe they’re still 3 games above .500.

Forgive me my ignorance, but the article says “top Giants prospect”, but I don’t see him listed in Fangraph’s top 39 prospects for the Giants. What am I missing?

You are correct — I looked at his batting line and assumed (obv he’s not Luciano, but I thought he’d be up there). Fair to call him a ‘prospect’, though — dude can hit!

Yeah, his numbers on BB Ref look good. but just didn’t understand the top prospect remark. I guess if he’s their 40th or worse prospect, and does well on the ML roster, then I’d think the farm is looking good.

he’s received about little-to-no fan-fare (until lately) despite better than the average hitter (as in 40% better) at nearly every level. i guess that’s just eleventh rounder things, lol.

What’s the deal with the much ballyhooed signee (at the time) LaStella? The only position he seems to be playing is BAT.

A mistake, with another year to go on the contract. The achilles is a pretty major injury, but even at the time it was a pretty meh signing.

Incredible they were able to get this guy out of retirement after such a long, distinguished career with Barca and three World Cups
