Andrés Giménez Played Through Injury, Won’t Require Surgery

By Simon Hampton | October 22, 2022 at 10:43am CDT

Guardians second baseman Andrés Giménez played through a non-displaced fracture in his left thumb for the past month, Zach Meisel of The Athletic reports. Unlike fellow Guardians infielder Jose Ramirez, who underwent off-season surgery for his thumb injury, Giménez won’t require surgery on his thumb.

The 24-year-old put up easily the best season of his young career, amassing 6.1 fWAR and establishing himself as a star in Cleveland. Giménez posted a .297/.371/.466 slashline with 17 home runs in 2022, as he hit the ball harder than previous seasons, while also cutting his strikeout rate by around 5% to 20.1% and lifting his walk rate to 6.1%. Long viewed as an elite gloveman at either shortstop or second base, Giménez was worth 16 Defensive Runs Saved, 12 Outs Above Average and had a 6.5 UZR. The fact he did this while playing through an injury for a chunk of the season makes it all the more impressive.

Having struggled to a .218/.282/.351 line across 210 plate appearances in 2021 after coming across from the Mets in the Francisco Lindor trade, Giménez’ breakout in 2022 certainly makes Cleveland fans feel better about that trade and gives the team yet another superstar infielder to build around. While his efforts won’t be enough to get past Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani for AL MVP honors this year, he’ll certainly receive a number of votes, and the Guardians will be hoping he remains in the conversation for many years to come.

Too bad he rarely hit higher than sixth or seventh in the lineup

I think the fact he had 69 ribbies hitting in those spots in the lineup speaks to one of the ways of how impressive he is.

No. It speaks to the Guardian’s game plan. They don’t have the typical TTO approach of most teams and are much more focused on keeping the chain moving. When you have Kwan, Ramirez, etc getting on it provides ample opportunities to drive men in despite the low lineup spot.

While I agree with your sentiment, yes they do rely on scrappy baseball and making the defense play harder, it still speaks to how good Giménez is. Too often baseball fans search for a reason why the other team screwed up for a guy to have success and try to find out what the other guy did wrong or say someone just got lucky, instead of just marveling at a players talent and just accepting them for what they are: a really good baseball player. It doesn’t matter how many guys get on base for you, you still have to drive them in.

The only time didn’t have at least .300 OBP was 2021. He did so in 2022 and 2020 in the majors and every single one of his stints in the minors.

In order for him to have a decent(and 300 is not decent) OBP he has to walk more or get hit 25x again. I think he’s taking lessons on getting hit from Ernie Pantusso.

What a great role model to the youth. Unlike the garbage time players nowadays that break a fingernail or hurt themselves riding a motor bike and need to miss the whole season. Bunch of babies need to get back in the game. You’re paid to play a kids game not sit on your bottom.

        Quote: Not how it works.
        – Why? Many injuries, can be played through and dealt with. For example, the healthcare system in Canada is a mess because people with actual injuries end up having to wait years on a list just to get it fixed. Strange, that people can still perform activities on a daily basis, despite having to wait years to get it fixed.

BTW, I’m not sitting on my couch. I’m a baseball coach and know when people are able to play and when they need serious help. Most times, it’s not serious and can be played through. My son got hit on the hand and I told him to come out but he wanted to finish the at-bat, in which, he hit a game winning double. Despite having a broken hand, he was able to play through the pain. 4 weeks later, he was back to normal.

You’re a little stuck on Cleveland right now, I see, is it because your daddy took the yanks out? Dang was it really a 3 game sweep? At least the bird dogs won 2 against the no nothing over hyped Yankees. 100% you don’t keep judge and let me find out you win without him as he put you guys in the post season. No one else was good enough to even help. Maybe my baby boy Rizzo helped a little, so handsome. At least Cleveland does it as a team, so fun to watch. Let the kids play not the 45 year old players on the yanks.

They don’t need a payroll increase. That’s the point. The yanks waste money just to suck I mean how long has it been since they were in a world series? They use to own baseball but now they get owned by the players who fleece them. They are a waiver wire team and it’s sad. Cleveland is home grown baby. We don’t need to spend money as we know how to draft.

This has nothing to do with the Yankees. Quit putting your team into every conversation. They didn’t lose because of his and Jose injuries. People always puttin their team into the conversation when it’s not needed. Yankees are to busy right now getting bent over by the Astros. Their not wanted in the guardians section.. smh. Everyone here is such a tool. It be nice to find one decent person to have an actual intellectual conversation but it wont be had here cause people like you are alive.

Mets are better with Lindor/McNeil up the middle offensively and defensively combined than Rosario/Gimenez. The trade worked well for both teams, hardly a “steal”.

The Mets only traded for 1 year of Lindor. They could have signed him as a free agent after 2021, likely at a much lower salary than they gave him on the extention

In total, the Mets received 3.6 bWAR from the contracts to Lindor and Carrasco they received

They could have also watched him sign with someone else. Just because they COULD have signed him doesn’t mean they WOULD have signed him. This is not MLB The Show where you get to sign whoever you want as long as you make the offer first. Other teams have just as much of a chance as you in the real world. Lindor also may have ended up getting traded somewhere he liked and could have signed and extension there instead.

Of course they could have always extended Javier Baez if that happened.

There were many more Shortstops available in 2021 free agency than teams willing to meet asking prices. That will continue in 2022 too

The 1st to sign, Seager, was the only to get anything similar to what Lindor had signed for. Correa settled for merely 3 years maximum. Story and Baez took a fraction of the money over deals 4 years shorter. Semien signed for half the commitment over 7 years

They ignored the supply and demand of the market about to begin. The Mets were always gping to have their pick of the lot if they were willing to spend, yet they chose to spend maximum dollars on top of the trade cost to get it done quicker than they needed to do

          Horrific business decision

Not a homer but Guardians won the trade hand over fist. Gimenez and Rosario been just as impactful as Lindor, so yeah it was a lopsided trade. Carrasco has been a little injured and not been as effective as he was in Cleveland either. We still also have two lottery picks in Wolf and Greene that still have a chance of making it. Also Lindor way overpaid contract makes it even worse

It’s a trade that Cohen’s checkbook made possible. All the Mets wanted to do was to get Lindor and extend him. When you’re rich, you can afford to operate that way. Even for a relatively rich team like the RS, that type of trade would be ruinous.

But Cohen can afford to replace prospects with FAs.
