Cubs To Sign Nick Neidert To Minor League Deal

By Simon Hampton | December 24, 2022 at 10:25am CDT

The Cubs are adding right hander Nick Neidert on a minor league deal, according to Robert Murray of Fansided. The deal includes opt-out clauses which Neidert can trigger on June 1 and July 1 of 2023.

Neidert, 26, made a solitary start for the Marlins last season, going five innings and giving up two runs. At Triple-A, he tossed 46 innings of 1.96 ERA ball, with a 26.1% strikeout rate and 4.9% walk rate. He was designated for assignment by the Marlins and became a free agent last month.

Originally drafted by the Mariners in the second round of the 2015 draft, Neidert was traded to Miami as part of a deal for Dee Strange-Gordon in 2017. He made his big league debut for Miami in the shortened 2020 campaign, tossing 8 1/3 innings of 5.40 ERA ball. He’d continue to serve as a depth piece for the Marlins moving between Triple-A and the majors, and since his 2020 debut has thrown 49 big league innings for a 4.59 ERA.

While he’s posted strong numbers in the minors, Neidert’s struggled to punch out batters in the big leagues, working to a 13.3% strikeout rate over his three seasons. Neidert throws a four-pitch mix, tossing a low-90s fastball alongside a slider, changeup and curveball. He still has one minor league option remaining.

To bad the Nick Neidert story is getting practically zero coverage because of the second Carlos Correa issue.

Good signing for the Cubs. Sure, a depth piece, but worth a look.

Des Moines is supposed to be lovely in the summer. With one option remaining, he will be an Iowa Shuttle participant.

Cubs should move Swanson to third – otherwise its Morel at third and he isnt close to the hitter that Madrigal is

Madrigal and Morel are both utility pieces. And Wisdom is at 3B.

Get used to hearing Hoerner to Swanson to Mertz – double play!

Gomes and Barnhart behind plate. Happ and Suzuki at corner OFs. Belli hitting 9th in CF.

Starting rotation of Stroman, Taillon, Steele, Wasneski and Assad. Hendricks, Thompson and Alzolay could be in mix for starting pitchers.

This is a solid 0.500 team maybe even 85-90 wins if Stroman, Taillon and Steele all have sub 3.50 era. Cardinals and Brewers have some competition in the weakest NL division.

Ok Manny. Lay off the eggnog when posting on Christmas Eve. Mertz? Lol. Is that Fred Mertz?
Also, Madrigal and Morel aren’t proper comps. Morels abilities are far superior to any of Madrigals, except maybe, working counts and contact.

Mervis – ok yeah maybe a +.500 team. And yes Brew crew and Cards aren’t gonna win the NL pennant. Cubs could sneak up and finish second in the division behind the Cards. Keep dreaming about a wild card though. Not in 2023…..

I was first against the signing of Swanson because I am against long term contracts and I thought Hoerner is a good shortstop. However, reading more about Swanson’s leadership and how sorely the Braves will miss him, I realized the Cubs may have made the best free agent signing for the money. Kudos to Hoyer and his staff!

Strike out percentage doesn’t impress me. One pitch can yield an out, but it takes at least three to record a strike out.
