Brandon Nimmo Week-To-Week With Low Grade Strain In Knee And Ankle

By Simon Hampton | March 18, 2023 at 2:26pm CDT

Brandon Nimmo is week-to-week with a low grade strain in his right knee and ankle, Mets general manager Billy Eppler told reporters, including Joel Sherman of the New York Post. His status for Opening Day remains unclear.

Nimmo, 30 later this month, re-signed with the Mets on an eight-year, $162MM deal this winter. The left-hander is coming off another stellar year in which he hit .274/.367/.433 with 16 home runs over 151 games. That last figure is important, as it was the first time Nimmo had topped 100 games since the 2018 season, and only the second time of his career. With that in mind, there’s reasonable cause for concern when an injury-prone player is dealing with any injury, even if this one doesn’t appear to be overly serious.

Having said that, Opening Day is now less than two weeks away, and with Nimmo set to be reevaluated in a week this development would throw a fair amount of doubt over his status for the Mets’ opener. If that is the case, the Mets could use Starling Marte in center field to begin the year, with Tommy Pham and Mark Canha handling the corners. Tim Locastro would likely be the first cab off the rank as a backup outfielder, although one other option for the team would be to use Darin Ruf as their fourth outfielder until Nimmo returns, paving the way for rookie Brett Baty to make the Opening Day roster.

While it remains unclear how much, if any, of the regular season Nimmo will miss, it’s another blow for a Mets side that recently lost star closer Edwin Diaz to a season-ending injury and veteran starter Jose Quintana to a long-term injury.

@case I 100% agree with you. They way overpaid for a injury prone soon to be corner outfielder. 3 years at 45 million with a team option for a 4th year at 15 million would have been generous. The Mets got smoked in this deal, just like the Lindor one

Your generous for offering him that. My offer would be 1 year minor league deal dude is entirely over rated even when healthy hes an average backup utility guy at best.

Lindor is the best SS signing in recent memory. If he was a free agent this past season he would have got 4 more years than the Mets gave him. And he just had an awesome year so you’re dumb for saying Lindor’s deal was a bad signing.

      • metfan4ever

For a guy every year has a high OBP, run hard all the time, works to get better, uses alot of pitches per AB but let’s talk about him getting injured, which insurance will pay. So what’s the downside, he got hurt running hard. That’s what you want a player to do.

The downside is most teams (maybe not Cohen) don’t have multiple CF on 160 mill type deals. Even if you can recoup financial losses your offense still suffers.

        • put it in the books

I would think any team losing a $160m offensive player is going to have their offense suffer as a result.

RHP Michael Soroka (right hamstring tightness)
          So who’s the replacement

        • NashvilleJeff

@metfan4ever The Braves don’t need a “replacement” for a pitcher who hasn’t thrown a ML pitch in the last 2 seasons (and only pitched in 3 games in 2020 before his achilles tendon injury.) Soroka isn’t being counted on to be a starter in the Braves rotation. He has to prove he’s healthy and can still be effective after the mechanical changes he underwent to try and stop being so injury prone. He’ll be doing that at AAA until he proves he can still get ML hitters out.

      • LFGMets (Metsin7)

@VonPurpleHayes depth is king, where is our depth in the bullpen? Our main guys already sucked, this “depth” makes up the worst bullpen in baseball. It was Diaz and Ottavino, everyone else stinks, including 40 year old David Robertson, he looked finished last year in the playoffs and is a year older now. Drew Smith and Nogosek are gonna save the season? I have a better chance of winning the lottery then those guys contributing. The only contributing they are gonna do is piling on to the loss column. This team is finished unless a major trade is coming

        • VonPurpleHayes

I didn’t really have confidence in Robertson last year, and he failed the eye test, but if you look at his actual stats, he was far from done. I think you’re underestimating the Mets. They’re good enough to win with a bullpen by committee.

        • avenger65

The White Sox are going through pretty much the same thing. They’ll be without their elite closer (Hendriks) for the season and will also have a closer by committee situation. The only difference is, the Sox are not a contender

        • LFGMets (Metsin7)

@Avenger65 The whitesox are a better all around team then the Mets. Whitesox bullpen is better, I’d rather have Lynn, Cease, and Giolito over Scherzer, Verlander, and Senga. Whitesox hitting is better too.

          1st Alonso > Vaughn MTS
          2nd McNeil > Andrus MTS
SS Anderson > Lindor (Lindor is much better fielder but Anderson is a much better hitter despite his low OBP skills) WS
          3rd Moncada > Escobar WS
          LF Benitendi > Canha WS
CF Robert > Injured Nimmo WS
          RF Marte > Colas MTS
          DH Jiminez >>> Vogelbach WS

Defense is the only statistic where the Mets are better than the Whitesox. Whitesox just need a real manager

        • BaseballisLife

What are you smoking up there in Queens? The White Sox are a .500 team. The Mets won 101.

        • metfan4ever

So why did the whitesox suck last year. They’re in a very winnable division and can’t win it. All those names and not making the playoffs. The Mets are in a very competitive division and won 101. And the WhiteSucks, how many wins did they have.

        • LFGMets (Metsin7)

@metfan4ever their manager was the problem like I said. Mets couldnt even finish .500 with Rojas till they got Buck. LaRussa was too old to manage. Whitesox with Showalter win 95 games. Mets are worse this year and completely shattered expectations last year + their division got better

I guess that it comes down to pitching and defense. It isn’t all about hits but it is also about run prevention. I think the Mets need to commit to Peterson every 5th day. And if Britton is signed ( Big IF ) and he is still throwing ground ball outs (another Big If) then they should have enough defense to survive some close games, closer committee or not.

The different English expressions can be confusing at times but I mostly find them kind of fun. This one (“the cab off the rank”) probably just means, “next in line” or “next man up”, right? I imagine the writer tries to avoid expressions and vocabulary that Americans wouldn’t be familiar with, but they slip by him once in a while! I also imagine if I were in New Zealand I wouldn’t be sure what expressions were used both there and in my native US.

I like the British/English sland and their usage of words. I’m more familiar with that. I know NZ and other English speaking countries all have their own slang and I find it very interesting. I did catch onto what Simon meant, I’d just never heard that expression. I read a story recently and the word “round” instead of “around” was used and I immediately knew it was Simon.

All you have to do is to look at the headlines on MLBTR every day to see that just about every player is getting injured. Anyone who plays sports is subject to injuries. I don’t understand all of the oblique strains, but arm and shoulder injuries are not surprising because when you throw the ball your arm is in an unnatural position. It just seems that these are happening at a much larger rate than twenty or so years ago.

It just seems so silly to do the rhythmic jumping that so many players do. What is the benefit of the post-game rhythmic jump thing? Is that the only way to celebrate a win? It’s like these players have never won anything before. How about be civilized, tip your cap to the other team, and walk off the field like a gentleman?

I think there is a middle ground here. You celebrate winning a division, winning a post-season series, winning the whole WBC. Toning it down for a run of the mill game seems smart. But when competitive juices get going, it sometimes comes natural

As you can see, the players in the wbc are very passionate about representing their countries. I don’t think that when one country gets an upset victory that they would just tip their cap, wave a courteous goodbye, or shake hands. You would do just what the players on the PR team did when they beat a tournament favorite. Injuries happen.

Ma4170 The Mets are the one team in the majors who have recorded World Series celebrations during Spring Training. I’m not even trying to pick on them here, but a Mets player can totally get injured celebrating in Spring Training.

Side is team if you haven’t worked it out. Probably comes from rugby. Each team is behind the ball so has their own “side” of the playing field.

Braves choked? When was that? I assume that you remember your LOLMets with a one team invitation to Choketober when you only needed to beat the Braves once to clinch the division. Then we lost to the NL team that went to the World Series. You lost to the Padres and Joe Musgrove’s greasy ear.

The players will be fine. The injuries aren’t life threatening. And Nimmo and Diaz already got their $$$$. I love seeing Cohen pay them to NOT play baseball. With luxury tax, he owes nearly $500M this year. I’d love to see his mega contracts all fail.

Jesus. Mets are getting decimated before the season even starts. I thought they would be an interesting and great team a couple months ago, until they lost Correa and now with all the injuries… gonna be tough. You never know if Scherzer or Verlander will hit a wall either at age 39/40. I gotta go with Padres as my pick in the NL, with a lot of stiff competition. Hell of a lineup as long as they are healthy.

Idk, is it better to lose a guy early in the year vs. during the season? Injury’s suck for all, but, they are gonna happen, and if you could pick a time to deal w/ injury”s, pre-season seams like the ‘best’ time???

      Maybe too silver-lining-ing-ey.

@avenger: I can only jinx teams that are from Chicago (which are already jinxed by ownership in the case of the White Sox). I think the Padres can take the NL this year. I’d be content with any team but the Dodgers.

Low grade strain in the knee and ankle? A personal pet peeve… you don’t strain the knee OR the ankle. You can sprain them (meaning the joint) which is a different healing timeline… or you strain muscles or tendons surrounding the sites. Bad reporting, which is very common when dealing with player’s injuries. Strains and sprains aren’t the same nor is their timeline to recover.

I hope that the Mets can finish .500 this year. Without a viable bullpen, this team is finished. Nimmo gets hurt every year anyway, this is no surprise. Its only a surprise to the one who signed him for 160 million dollars and a small minority of delusional fans. I expect the same to happen to Verlander and Scherzer at one point. Thats what happens when you give 160 million in combined money to two 40 year old pitchers, not even including Scherzer’s injury riddled season last year. Spending money does nothing when you can’t spend it correctly. 90% of the online Met fans are delusional. They think this team is a World Series Contender. The fact is that this “Number 1 rotation in baseball” is around below average/barely average, the hitting is maybe slightly above average if im being generous, and the bullpen might be the worst in baseball. Only the Mets could assemble a .500 team that cost 400 million dollars. Pathetic

I cannot believe some people who actively wish more Mets would go down to injury. Anyone wishing that is trash to me. Why can’t it just be ‘I hope they have a bad year’? Like or dislike the team fine but these are human beings who some are hoping get injured and have to deal with the pain and rehabilitation afterwards. I have gone through having to learn to walk again and I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. Here’s hoping Diaz a full recovery and can return to performing as he did before the injury.
