Tigers Acquire Jake Marisnick From White Sox

By Darragh McDonald | May 30, 2023 at 4:15pm CDT

The Tigers announced that they have acquired outfielder Jake Marisnick from the White Sox in exchange for cash considerations. Marisnick wasn’t on Chicago’s 40-man roster and won’t require a corresponding move.

Marisnick, 32, first appeared in the majors almost a decade ago, debuting in July of 2013. He’s spent most of that time as a glove-first outfielder, generally hitting at a below-average rate while providing good defense and some speed. In over 2,000 plate appearances in his career, he’s hit .228/.281/.384 for a wRC+ of 80 while walking at a 5.4% rate and striking out 30.1% of the time. But he’s stolen 79 bases while also tallying 76 Defensive Runs Saved, 48 Outs Above Average and a mark of 22.9 from Ultimate Zone Rating.

He signed a minor league deal with the White Sox this winter and was added to the big league squad about three weeks ago. He was primarily utilized as a defensive replacement, appearing in nine games but with just a pair of trips to the plate. He was designated for assignment last week when the club selected Clint Frazier, then cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment.

The Tigers had their outfield depth thinned a bit today, as Matt Vierling was placed on the injured list, joining fellow outfielders Kerry Carpenter and Austin Meadows. Marisnick will presumably head to Triple-A Toledo and provide the club with a veteran option to turn to if they suffer another injury.

It only took a best of 7 Roshambow. The white Sox lost with 4 extremely hard kicks to the lower regions in 6 tries.

That would be pretty funny if the White Sox turned around and picked up someone for cash considerations.

At this point Johnny Cash would be an improvement, and he is a skeleton.

If the tigers waste ABs on stop gap Marsnick when the ABs could go to a young player, it would totally show Harris is not moving in the right direction. Henry-Malloy looks ready, even though it would be a step back defensively. They need offense and Marsnick isn’t going to provide that. Even Nevin would be a better choice.

Like the article says, they’re sending him to Toledo. They let Davis go and Nevin just got sent back to Detroit, so Toledo needed another body.

They ve been trying to transition Malloy to 3B where he’s been playing all yr in Toledo. Not sure how and OF is relevant to him at this point as far as ABs…

Colt Keith will be the 3B in two years. Henry-Malloy is being transitioned to 3B FROM THE OF. That’s how OF is relevant! He most likely will be Miggy’s replacement at DH next year so may as well give him a taste now. With both Greene and Vierling having injuries, they may need to call up a CF now. Maybe Parker Meadows will get the call.

If they were just intending on DHing him they would not have bothered moving him to 3B this season. Keith just cracked AA. Obviously the Tigers are looking at multiple options going forward for 3B and Malloy is possibly one of them.

And again Malloy has played 0 games in the OF this season in Toledo, so THAT is why OF is NOT relevant to him at this point.

I don’t know the timeline but I’m guessing the Tigers are waiting to promote Henry-Malloy because of service time and getting an extra year before FAgency. Anyone know the rule?

Malloy has cooled off a bit and probably isn’t quite ready to be a full time MLB player (and they certainly don’t want him to be sitting on the bench). He’ll get called up eventually, hopefully when he’s riding a hot streak.

I have not seen much of Malloy but reports regarding his throwing arm at 3B have not been good. Remember Nick Castellanos at third? What about Willi Castro? He may have improved, but…

The date for the the service time crap has long passed. In fact it was over when the Cubs brought up Mervis. In an unrelated note Ross is finally going with my line up suggestion 3 weeks ago when I said Morel should bat 9th and thus put Morel-Hoerner and Swanson together after the line up turns over. About time.

Marisnick also replaces the defense first CF the Tigers traded to the Marlins earlier this month when Chisholm got hurt.

Just yesterday I was excited about the Tigers and their progress. Two more injuries have put a dent in that and Jake Marisnick doesn’t fix it (even if we had a time machine to go back to when he was a decent platoon player).

Why is consideration always plural in baseball transactions like this? Seems odd.

I don’t know. Consideration is something one party gives to another execute a contract. I took 3 business law classes and I don’t recall it ever being plural. I looked it up and still couldn’t find an example of consideration being plural in contractual situations. It’s like someone started saying it in baseball and others just blindly followed suit.

        But, I could be wrong…..

Kinda like when the Marlins made a “Big Splash”, FA signing about 10 years ago….every hack writer was calling every significant FA signing a “a big splash”…..for about 2 years…..
That’s when I realized how bad most of them were…….

I just saw an article reporting that the GM for the Sox, Hahn, says they are not ready to sell yet.. Im not sure what they are waiting for, considering they are back to being 12 games under .500. This team is what it is. People can cry about scheduling or injuries all they want, However this team is what it is: No heart, underachieving, lack of talent and discipline group of goofs just wanting to pickup their checks. With the Exception of very few, this team was built incorrectly and on any other team the GM would be gone. Hahn lucked into an org that refuses to fire people unless they are the manager or lower on the totem pole.

So I was at Palos lanes last week and boy was I having a hell of a game. Was there with my twin brother, his wife and two neighbors. The place was packed full of bowlers. So I got up to order some nachos with extra peppers and cheese. So as I walked past the video games I saw Jake playing Miss Pac-Man . Yes Jake himself. So I stopped and watched and we actually played doubles after his game ended. True story ! He knew I was a Sox’s fan as I was wearing my 1986 George Foster jersey.

Sick dude. I was at the yolk in south loop just the other morning and in walks Clint Frazier! Wasn’t wearing my 2004 Mark Buehrle shirt jersey. Kinda upset that I wore it to mow Moms lawn in Franklin Park just a few days prior. I did mention I was a huge Sox fan. He wouldn’t answer whether or not he could play 2B – what a coy guy!
