The Angels have reinstated outfielder Jo Adell from the 60-day injured list, the team announced. Utility player Kyren Paris has been placed on the 60-day IL himself, freeing up space on both the active and 40-man rosters. In other news, the Angels have optioned Jordyn Adams and recalled Michael Stefanic from Triple-A.
Adell had been on the IL with an oblique strain since the All-Star break. After a particularly disappointing 2022 season, the former top prospect spent the first half of the 2023 campaign at Triple-A, where he posted a .956 OPS and a 121 wRC+. He earned the call back to the big leagues in early July following Mike Trout’s hamate fracture, but he only managed to play four games before landing on the IL himself. With 12 games left on the schedule, he will have a brief opportunity to impress the Angels brass before the offseason.
Paris felt soreness in his left thumb ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Tigers, and it has since been diagnosed as a torn ligament. With so little time remaining in the season, his placement on the 60-day IL is hardly more than a formality; the Angels will have to add him back to the 40-man roster during the offseason.
However, the season-ending injury comes as particularly disappointing news for Paris, who was enjoying his first taste of big league action at just 21 years old. Selected out of high school in the second round of the 2019 draft, he has quickly risen through the ranks in the Angels system. After a strong 2023 campaign at Double-A with the Rocket City Trash Pandas, he bypassed Triple-A and earned a major league call-up when rosters expanded on September 1. While the youngster struggled to adjust to big league pitching (he slashed .100/.200/.100 in 15 games), he showed off his versatility across the diamond, taking reps at shortstop, second base, and center field. Paris currently ranks as the no. 5 prospect in the organization, per MLB Pipeline. He will retain his prospect status next season.
Adams, the Angels no. 15 prospect according MLB Pipeline, has appeared in 17 games at the MLB level, slashing .128/.125/.128 in 40 trips to the plate. He will be replaced on the active roster by Stefanic, who has been on fire this season at Triple-A, posting a .930 OPS and a 139 wRC+. With Adell returning and Paris headed to the IL, it’s no surprise the Angels have swapped out Adams, an outfielder, for Stefanic, an infielder.

All any of us Angels fans can do at this point is laugh. Like, seriously.. the team is a total mess this year.
Halo11Fan
Are you giving up on Adell?
Now that’s funny. He may not turn out to be any good, but believing you know he won’t be good is hilarious.
kellin
I’m laughing at the whole thing. Paris getting hurt, like almost the entire team.. Adams getting optioned down and Stefanic being brought back up.. as if any of these AAA guys are going to do anything.
AngelsFan1972
It is the last few weeks of the season. Is there any better time to bring them up and give them some big league experience?
Halo11Fan
Now that’s fair.
I’m looking forward to the ABs of O’Hoppe, Adell, Neto and Schanuel.
It’s the best reason to watch these last two weeks.
i like al conin
For a continuously low-rated farm system, they sure have a solid, inexpensive core of recently promoted prospects.
halogirl
I Like, I was saying the same thing yesterday before filihok/ halo fan dead panned me
Halo11Fan
Solid is about right. Adell is the only one that can be a difference maker, but he’s also the one who is most likely to fall on his face.
AngelsFan1972
It is a little short sided saying Adell is the ONLY ONE of the group that can be a difference maker. Unless you are able to predict the future, there is no way of knowing .
If you can predict the future, can I have the winning number’s for this weeks lottery please?
prov356
Dude. Adell went 0-5 tonight with 4 strike outs. The kid isn’t getting it.
Halo11Fan
And today he’s two for two with a walk. Which is about as meaningful as last nights game.
Adell is a high ceiling, low floor player.
The other three we are talking about are high floor, low ceiling players.
Adell has the best chance of making multiple all star teams, and the worst chance of getting 2,000 big league ABs.
I think it’s good for a team to have a mix of prospects.
JoeBrady
Halo11Fan
Are you giving up on Adell?
=======================
Finally, after laughing at the LAA FO for promoting Adell three years too early, I think they finally got the timing down.
Now the question is, how quickly will the FO give up on him? Will 30 Ks in April do it? IMO, Adell should get 600 ABs and never be pulled. The are unlikely to win next year anyway. 2024 is the time to decide whether or not Adell is a regular.
Halo11Fan
I’m not giving up on Adell. So much talent. Such a good head on his shoulders. So willing to learn.
He may never have the ability to control the strike zone of have the necessary bat to ball skills.
It wouldn’t surprise me if he made several all star teams or had a sub 2,000 big league at bat career.
It would surprise me if any of the other three made several all-star teams or had a sub 2,000 AB career.
BigFred
All of Adell’s hits this season have been for extra bases. Somewhat of a small sample though.
AngelsFan1972
It maybe small, but is definitely a positive. In a season of negatives…I am ok with a few positives.
prov356
I would prefer Adell hit all singles if it lowered his strikeout rate.
AngelsFan1972
I’d prefer a concession on both, lower K’s and a mixture of power.
Halo11Fan
That strikeout to walk rate is a death sentence. It’s why I’m very skeptical regarding Moniak.
JoeBrady
I seriously doubt Moniak can play, but Adell’s K/W is actually tolerable now. In the past four years, in AAA:
4.3
4.5
2.8
2.2
He’s a bit old at this point for AAA, but even if his MLB K/W jumps to 2.75, with his power, that’s okay.
haighwiser
Do they not stretch out before a game, geeeezzz.. I have never seen so many players hurt before it has to be something they are doing or not doing.
KENNETH A LICHTIG
Don’t laugh. If Mike Trout stays put, he will be our next DH. Shohei will sign with the Dodgers.
Halo11Fan
Rendon and Rengifo will split time at DH.
disadvantage
@Halo
Did you mean Rendon and Rengifo will split time on the DL?
Halo11Fan
Rengifo has been mostly healthy. They are both poor defensive players.
nukeg
Trouts not staying put. I think both sides realize it’s for the best.
AngelsFan1972
Kenneth,
Too late I am laughing!
At his point, there is a chance you are right about both. No one knows for sure.
i like al conin
Nukeg, I’ll bet Trout stays and Arte spends. If he sticks to a top 10 payroll, the only long-term contracts after 2024 are Trout, Rendon and Anderson, they have a solid core of inexpensive young position players and maturing SPs. Trading Trout with his permission will require eating a large portion like the Rockies did with Arenado. Will the spending work? That’s. a different discussion.
nukeg
@I like, word from the inside is that Trout is going to ask for a trade. I also think Arte will sell the team. Arte wanted one last push for a playoff run with two of the best on the field. That clearly didn’t happen.
BigTuna
One writer wrote a non-fact based article for clicks stating “Angels would be open to trading Trout” if he asks for it. I don’t buy it for 1 second. Trout has always expressed he loves being an Angel and confirmed that when he signed a huge 13 year deal to keep himself in Anaheim for the long haul.
Halo11Fan
It was about as meaningful as speculating the Angels would be willing to sign Clayton Kershaw if he wanted to become an Angel.
Just the press being the press.
JoeBrady
if he asks for it……Trout has always expressed he loves being an Angel
========================
You’re debating your own point. “if he asks for it” means he no longer wants to be an Angel.
BigTuna
I’m actually not at all. My point is there was a major overreaction from baseball fans and the media stemming from a baseless article with no real information and just one writer guessing that the Angels would trade him if he wanted it.
AngelsFan1972
Good for Adell. I hope he does well in the last couple of weeks.
We have some nice young budling blocks for the future with Neto, O’Hoppe, Schanuel, Rengifo, Moniak, Joyce, Detmers and Adell, all 26 and younger. Not all of them will star but they should all be nice contributors next year,
halogirl
Let the kids play!
prov356
Yes, but we’ve been saying that in September for 10 years now. We need a season where we don’t need to let the kids play.
halogirl
You’re right. It wasn’t this season so why rehash it?
Get some pitching in the odd season and make a run in 24
AngelsFan1972
I hope you meant off season. But oddly, “the odd season” seems to fit this year.
halogirl
Typo
But yes to off
And yes to it being odd
prov356
We’ve been saying we need pitching for ten years too! I agree though, lets look to the future and hope the team is sold this winter.
outinleftfield
Can you convince Arte to sign a top pitcher to a deal longer than 3 years. The Angels are not getting anyone really good on a short term deal. Just retreads and never has beens.
prov356
I have always said, we only sign pitchers who are looking to bounce back to a once mediocre career.
AngelsFan1972
I am willing to break open my piggy bank. Who’s in with me ?
A collective TR team to buy the team from Arte.
With this collective team of misfits we are sure to drive the team right out of MLB. haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
halogirl
I’m in. I can pull my change jar out of the closet
prov356
I can throw in my ashtray change. (For you kids, cars used to come with ash trays in the dash that non-smokers usually used for spare change.)
AngelsFan1972
we are probably up to $24.36 cents.
Are we there yet prov? (car reference)
prov356
I think I have $3.37 to contribute so we should be there.
halogirl
If Adell finally lives up to the hype. That would be amazing. I think he will figure it out!
AngelsFan1972
halogirl.
I like the positivity,
Reynaldo
I thought Paris and Adams were already demoted last week?
outinleftfield
Angels have now had 34 different players hit the IL. Most of their 40 man roster. That is insane. Arte wouldn’t sell, so the baseball gods decided to break his team, literally.
AngelsFan1972
outinleftfield,
I wonder if that is a record? Most players on the IL?
outinleftfield
That is a good question. I will see if I can find that out.
AngelsFan1972
Good. I was hoping you’d look. I am too busy collecting spare change from prov and halogirl for my efforts on buying the team from Arte.
You in?
outinleftfield
Put me down for a c-note.
AngelsFan1972
outinleftfield…I wonder how many of Prov’s kids are googling “C-note”
halogirl
1972, I have to admit it. I was. I never heard that before
AngelsFan1972
good for you for admitting it. Nothing wrong with it. It just shows how old me, prov, and outinleftfield are. ha ha ha
JoeBrady
kids are googling “C-note”
==========================
While the dinos are googling Zelle & that other thing my kids use.
outinleftfield
I cannot find data before 2015.
In 2021 there were 5 teams that had more than that, but it included those that were on the COVID IL.
In a non-Covid year it’s the most by 4 in the years they have data for.
This season the Dodgers are 2nd in number of players at 29, but have the most player days on the IL.
AngelsFan1972
I wonder if the Dodgers ahd Freeman and Betts go on the IL. What would their season have turned out like?
I know a lot better than the Angels simply because they are so much deeper. But it is interesting to ponder. I would speculate they maybe get in as a wild card.
User 2976510776
Jo Adell is a good example of Angel logic. When he was playing he was usually one of the causes or reasons or had fingers pointed at him for why the team was bad. He pulls up lame with an oblique, just like Ohtani and others, and goes on the IL. Later when fans defend the team or Minasian and gave injuries as an excuse they list Adell among them and say “the team can’t win with so many injuries”. The announcers do it, radio, fans. etc. But nothing changed, he was still mediocre. So Angel players get rewarded for going on the IL. They go from the reason the team is bad to the front office excuse the team is bad in a day. And they sell the idea that the team is a different team if that player had been in the lineup or that player or the Angels are 20-10 with Neto in the lineup if he was healthy they wouldve made the playoffs or Urshela so they’re more important than Trout or whatever. crazy logic.
halogirl
I have read and reread your response. I am extremely confused at what it is you are trying to point out.
The Angels list their best players for an extended amount of time. Add to that all of the other injuries, and the sum of it all is what transpired this season.
I don’t know how else you can look at it
OHoope Neto. Walsh. Urshella. Trout. Rendon. Ohtani. Ward all starters this season
urnuts
Many have said the Angels need to sign a top FA pitcher, I don’t see top FA signing in Anaheim until there is better ownership, a solid and stable coaching staff, and more player development . Why would a top FA want to play currently in Anaheim?
We have a few decent young players who by 2026 hopefully will be solid.
My dream – Joe Lacob is the owner by 2026, our manager someone solid, and the current young pitching is established. A new stadium is approved and we go back to the California Angels name.
(Going into 2026 I see us and the current youth movement set at C, 1b, SS, 2 of the 3 OF positions, #3,4,5 SP, and 3 bullpen pieces.)
Trade Trout and $30 million to Yankees or Phillies for solid a 2b and SP prospect plus a MLB bullpen piece.
Just a dream.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
The Angels need a real life Guardian Angel. To wit, someone in the front office who actually has a clue about talent evaluation.
Gotta rebuild this franchise from within in and put a hold on Artie signing every FA toy that comes down the pike.
A total teardown is in order. Which means not re-signing Otani and trading Trout. Clearly having two Hope Diamonds shining brightly among cheap zircons isn’t working.
Gonna take some serious balls and discipline to let Otani walk and trade Trout, but they can’t afford another ho-hum season like the past dozen. And if they continue to go down the same unproductive road expecting a different result, they are chasing Fool’s Gold.
Sealbeach Comber
“A total teardown is in order.”
For the Dodgers, it took new ownership with very different mindset and priorities and it still took them years to rebuild the organization. It was costly and messy, but they did it right and now they have a very solid winning organization in a huge baseball market.
Halo11Fan
The Angels need a team President. And Arte need to let him hire a GM. And the GM and President can be in charge of hiring.,
For the most part. I think Moreno acts as the team President.
