Giants Re-Sign Cody Stashak To Minor League Deal

By Darragh McDonald | January 31, 2024 at 8:33pm CDT

The Giants have re-signed right-hander Cody Stashak to a minor league deal, per Matt Eddy of Baseball America. He had signed a minor league deal with the club in August of last year but will now return to the organization for this year.

Stashak, 30 in June, made his major league debut with the Twins in 2019 and the start of his big league career went well. He threw 25 innings for the Twins that year and another 15 in the shortened 2020 season. He had a 3.15 earned run average after those two campaigns, having paired a strong 26.1% strikeout rate with a tiny 2.5% walk rate.

In 2021, he made 15 appearances with his ERA jumping to 6.89, though bad luck may have played a role in that small sample. His walk rate jumped to 13.3% but he also punched out 34.7% of hitters. A .389 batting average on balls in play and 62% strand rate were both on the unfortunate side of average. He didn’t get a chance for those numbers to regress as a left back disc injury prevented him from making an appearance after the month of May.

He made 11 appearances in 2022, with his ERA falling to 3.86 in those, but then he required season-ending surgery to repair a labrum tear in his throwing shoulder. He was outrighted by the Twins at the end of the year and then joined the Lancaster Barnstormers of the independent Atlantic League, but signed with the Giants after just a couple of appearances. He made five appearances for Triple-A Sacramento late last year, allowing seven earned runs in five innings.

Though the results weren’t ideal in that brief look, the Giants were nonetheless intrigued enough to bring him back. After so much missed time, it’s hard to know what form he will be in, but he has generally had strong strikeout and walk numbers all throughout his career. In 383 minor league contests, he has punched out 25.3% of batters faced while giving out free passes at just a 5.8% clip. If he gets over his recent health woes, he’ll provide the Giants with some non-roster depth. If he gets added to the roster, he still has a couple of options and just over three years of service time.

The club’s bullpen figures to have a core of Camilo Doval, Luke Jackson and the brothers Tyler Rogers and Taylor Rogers. But the remaining spots could be taken by guys with options and limited experience, such as Ryan Walker, Sean Hjelle, Erik Miller or Randy Rodríguez. If Stashak is healthy and throwing well, there could be a path open for him to get back to the majors.

Guy looked pretty decent until he got injured. Let’s hope he can get back to form and be productive again. In 2022, he was actually underperforming his ERA. ERA was 3.86 compared to his FRA of 3.38. Good pick up by the Giants. Worst case, he doesn’t return to normal and it’s just a minor league contract.

Zaidi needs to stop dumpster diving & get star impact players – at least top of rotation SP & 2-3 star impact bats.

If Zaidi can’t get the job done he needs to be FIRED!!!

You do know that Zaidi makes a high seven-figures, don’t you? Seriously, seven figures. For real.

In Zaidi’s time with the Giants the biggest name for which he has traded is Robbie Ray. The second biggest name is Tony Watson – for real. Maybe GMs find Zaidi as off-putting as fans do…

Buying the next Akiyama and dumpster pitchers is is “signature play”…

          Nope

          Here’s what you said

“If was made a GM for six years my trade record would be better than scoring Tony Watson as my biggest haul. You too filihok, you would do better with trades.”

It’s a bit convoluted because, like most people, you’re writing level here is pre-high school.

Could anyone get a “bigger haul” than Tony Watson? Sure. I guess. Even Zaidi

“In Zaidi’s time with the Giants the biggest name for which he has traded is Robbie Ray. The second biggest name is Tony Watson ”

          This you?

But, then you go on to say “better record with trades”. This is where I take real issue. The average baseball fan, or MLBTR commenter, would get taken to town repeatedly making trades with real front offices (or negotiating with agents).

As to having zero idea about you – wrong.

Using basic Bayesian reasoning, it becomes clear that you don’t know what you are talking about.

tonyinsingapore, Clearly the problem is your delusional belief that being a GM is easy. Generally, no matter how knowledgeable some fans are, they are clueless to how difficult building a roster is. Fans like you, with the power of hindsight criticize what he’s done without ever saying what he should have done.

It’s also interesting how you talk about trades specifically. But you ignore Zaidi’s excellent record of picking up guys like Estrada, Wade, and Yaz for nothing, signing Flores, and drafting guys like Bailey and Harrison. And you show no recognition of his ability to recognize, and profit from, the potential of guys like Gausman, and Rodon.

I’m a Bay Area guy and know all about the FA signings. And I didn’t say I could an organisation. I said if given six years OJT O could land a bigger trade than Tony Watson. And so could you (I said that about the person too).

But you’re not saying you could run an organization? Anybody c make a big trade, the question is how good is it?

So who would you have traded? Keep in mind that when Zaidi took over he had a roster full of untradeable guys. Things have changed though, and they now have tradeable assets. If scoring a big trade defines a well-run org for you, who would you trade now?

Owners are more willing than ever to fire early – same thing in the NFL. Thee must be a clause in the contracts that incents fired Managers and HC to see other work – not as simple as sitting at home and waiting for the cash to hit the bank account…

Bottom line is that the G’s need to win 85+ or FZ is done…

And knowing Brisbee’s, work I can see that he might have offered that opinion, but I highly doubt he stated categorically that Zaid would be fired for failing to make the playoffs. He isn’t dumb.

When Giants sign a player, too often we hear qualifiers like, “if he’s fully recovered,” “if he can bounce back like he did in 2021,” “if the Giants can fix what ___ team couldn’t,” then this guy might be able to contribute at the major league level. I don’t see other teams doing that nearly as often as the Giants in this Zaidi Era.

Rodon seemed to be healthy and ready for success when Yanks signed him. How’d that go? BTW, they fixed Rodon. Luke Jackson was recovering. Cobb was. Desclifani was. Can’t pick and choose 78, except that’s what I just did.

Whether Rodon was healthy or not, with a history of being injured, it was/is a big gamble giving 6 years for the Yankees. Teams see the front end of deals to be the productive seasons, with expectations that the back end won’t be. Not sure how the Yanks will feel should they get only 2 productive seasons out of 6. But, so far Zaidi made a wise decision not to match the Yankees offer.
