Fantasy Baseball: Buying The Dip

By Nicklaus Gaut | June 11, 2024 at 9:46pm CDT

Hello friends.

I always preach patience when it comes to slow starters, but once we get out of May it's officially time to start questioning if what we've seen so far is what we'll be getting for the rest of the season.

For those already rostering these slowpokes, it is a matter of deciding whether it's worth it to keep holding them and root for positive regression, or whether you should abandon all hope and try to ship them out for whatever loose change you can find. And if you don't have any early-season disappointments, it's about whether you should be bargain hunting and betting on the come, looking to acquire the early-round duds whose presence is currently infuriating one of your fellow managers.

Are fantasy sports the bread and circuses that distract the common man from the fact owners steal from tax payers??

No, very few people care about that. The federal government is in the hole for $33T. $100M here or there is lint in their pockets.

Joe, difference is the feds take the same roughly from the working man whether they owed 16t or 32t, by percentages anyways.

Sports teams usually steal most heavily from local municipalities, and, sometimes lesser extent states.

When the braves moved to cobb County, it wasn’t the feds rolling out the cash. That 100m looms pretty large for a smaller taxation pool, not to mention it’s usually 3-5 times that much these days

And the municipality gets something in return. I am pretty willing to wager that NYC received a LOT more in tax revenues than they laid out for the NYY stadium. That might not be the case everywhere, but there is a lot of partnership stuff going on.

Very few municipalities really see the revenue boost you imply, and, don’t forget how that money could’ve been used elsewhere as well without forking it over for the benefit of an enterprise that doesn’t really need it.

I don’t think there’s a single mlb club that can’t cover the bond service on their projects on their own, and, I dont think many of the projects need half the crap they try to pack into a new stadium these days as gimmicks.

Id venture to say there are VERY VERY few mlb cities that see can see such a return, probably can count then on a single hand

Sitting in 1st in my Division at 7 & 4. 14 Player Keeper League, 26 Man Roster carried year-to-year. Just bought Bobby Miller and Randy Arozarena (injured and slow-start) from a much more desperate 4 & 7 Owner for Carlos Rodriguez and Ryan McMahon. Just saying, maybe one more angle you can play with your fellow Owners is to “prey” upon the playoff fringe teams and procure longer term roster upgrades for players that can impact other teams now.

My man. My 3 leagues almost never trade, but I have made a concerted effort this year to focus on August and beyond. Drafted/acquired guys like Verlander, Cole, and Kershaw in the hopes that their contributions later, will help me more than what I’d have gotten in April/May had I drafted healthy guys.

Been there, done that too. The “problem” is winning enough until they come back, but I hear ya! Good luck homie. This was the first year in a decade or so that I don’t have Verlander (Spring Training cut to my 26 Man). I figured he’s getting old, and hurt, but he’s still effective when on the bump. Just couldn’t justify it (anymore)
        Cheers JB!
