The Angels have selected the contract of left-handed pitcher José Suarez from Triple-A, the team announced. To make room for Suarez on the active roster, the club optioned right-hander Hans Crouse to Salt Lake. Meanwhile, the Angels opened a spot for Suarez on the 40-man by transferring Jo Adell to the 60-day injured list, marking the end of the outfielder’s season.
Suarez, 26, signed with the Angels as an international free agent just over ten years ago. He has pitched for the big league club in each of the past six seasons. He was a solid contributor in 2021 and ’22, pitching a total of 207 1/3 innings over 45 games (34 starts) with a 3.86 ERA and 4.16 SIERA. However, he lost most of his 2023 season to a shoulder injury, and he was ultimately DFA’d this past June after a poor start to his 2024 campaign. Over 35 1/3 innings, the southpaw gave up 34 runs (32 earned) on 44 hits and 22 walks.
After clearing waivers, Suarez accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A, where he has pitched to an unsightly 6.54 ERA and 5.10 FIP over 11 starts. While his results have been poor, he offers the Angels a much-needed fresh arm for the bullpen. Top prospect Caden Dana only recorded three outs in his second career start on Sunday, and the bullpen was forced to pitch the rest of the game. Crouse, who was recalled yesterday, tossed 1 1/3 innings in that 7-4 loss to the Rangers, walking two and striking out one.
Adell, 25, landed on the 10-day IL over the weekend with a left oblique strain. By moving him to the 60-day IL with just three weeks left to go in the regular season, the Angels have officially ended his 2024 campaign. The former top prospect seemed to be enjoying a long-awaited breakout over the first eight weeks of the season, but he had since fallen back to earth. Over his last 90 games, Adell was batting .190 with a .611 OPS and 70 wRC+. He will be eligible for arbitration for the first time this coming offseason.

Just when I thought saurez was gone for good.

As long as a player is in the Angel’s minor league system, there’s always a risk they will be called up. None of us understand the team’s love for this guy, but I’ll just say if this isn’t a sign of “tank mode enabled,” I dunno what is..
carllafong
The Angels fans are the only fans in the game that always believe our players are great– even when no one else will have them on their roster and we finish last. Closing in on 100 losses and yet our players are vital. Walsh is where? Fletcher is a knuckleball pitcher in the minors. And now Suarez.
Rexhudler86
@carla I haven’t really seen that. If I recall you wanted them to break the bank in free agency. As far as the players that can be great if your talking about neto, schanuel, and o’hoppe they would be in the top 10 out of the 100 rankings if they were in the minors. They’re not any worse than Langford, crews, and mayo at the moment. Angels just need a couple top 5 picks and hopefully they get starting pitchers in the draft. Walsh was great until he got t.o.s. you can’t blame him or anyone just badluck that you couldn’t predict.
AngelsFan1972
@carlafong
Really? The ONLY fans that believe that?
Come on now
Tim Stewart
carllafong – They are not going to end with 100 losses.

You guys have it all wrong. This is plain and simple Angel nepotism. Bartolo Colon picked up the phone and told Perry, “Call up my son. Now.”
JoeBrady
The former top prospect seemed to be enjoying a long-awaited breakout over the first eight weeks of the season
=========================
Meh. Always check the K/W. He had a 47/10 through the first two months. Even if he did hit 11 HRs, it is always just a matter of time before the pitchers pitch to his weaknesses.
In some ways, his Aug-Sep stats suggested a more sustainable breakout.
bkbk
Yea, he made a major swing change (dropped the toe tap) in the end of july and his numbers were substantially different.
bkbk
The craziest turn is that Moniak seems to actually found a swing over the last three months.

Indeed, Adell had probably the best month of his career in August after he removed the leg kick. However, he was not off to a good start in Sept. It would have been nice to see how he finished off the year. This injury couldn’t come at a worst time. He finally had a month Angel fans could live with and now this.
Tim Stewart
DoodooBean – I think that was a major part of his improvement .
Tim Stewart
DoodooBean – From what I remember he has cut down on wildly chasing, making them throw closer to the strike zone. I will say I am surprised his walk rate has not improved especially from last year. Even if he has not walked more, he is making them throw closer to the strike zone. Theoretically this could improve his balls in play numbers short term because fielding positions for a fast runner like him would be slightly forward , unless his exit velos on ground balls have not changed.
Tim Stewart
DoodooBean- All good points, but making pitchers throw closer to the strike zone should still help some even if he pulls the ball. It also can make it easier to see success when/if he starts to develop a more oppo approach. He can also be deployed strategically against the right kind of pitcher. Just my 2 cents , but I understand your solid points.
GoogleMe
Angels look like they are doing him a solid by allowing him to audition before he becomes a free agent.
taco guy
With the way he’s pitched the last two seasons, it’s best to leave other teams guessing he could pitch instead of sending him out on the mound and removing any hope he can get outs.
Tim Stewart
taco guy – Well as far as I can tell , it looks like he added like 4 mph to his fastball since we saw him last time.
prov356
Not that we need it, but this is the final piece of evidence to show the Angels’ season is over.

I don’t think any Angel’s fans are under false pretenses that the Angels are chasing wins at this point. They are just chasing development. See if Detmers has worked on what he needed to work on. Let Aldegheri, Dana, and Kochanozwicz finish out the season to see what they need to work on. I think they rather be looking at Matthew Lugo instead of Kavadas for a 5th outfielder possibility but Lugo was injured in his first game with the Bees.
They will probably start the season with Anderson, Detmers, Soriano, Canning and Silseth, but the young guys will be needed at some point during the season. With the added year of development for the core and Trout being available maybe the Angels can get to about 75 wins next year.
Plugnplay
@google, 75 wins next season? We don’t know if that will be 65 or 95 wins just yet. Off season moves pending.
RyÅnWKrol
In the first half of the season Angels fans were under those false pretenses because they needed Arte Moreno to tell them their team was rebuilding. It was pretty clear when they just opted for signing relievers and went with a long list of players who don’t even have a full season of experience in the big leagues. There are a lot of former first round picks on the Angels right now. Fans finally figured it out after they drafted Christian Moore and traded Estevez and Garcia. They’re already using the haul they got just for those two.
holecamels35
So I guess we finally learned Adell is not very good, or at best has power with awful plate discipline.
Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman
So it it safe to say Jo is a bust yet?
JoeBrady
Not imho. The Angels did as poor a job of developing Adell as I’ve seen. He was probably the worst player in AAA when he was first promoted. He had a 43/10 K/W with -0- HRs.
He was at least 1, probably two years away from the pros at that point.
So while his elite status is gone, I think he has 30 HR, .260 potential.
Plugnplay
Agree Joe, Adell can and should be serviceable #3 OF, they’ll just need more from the other 2 OF’s. A healthy Trout solves one. Also ward is a solid #2 OF. So, the OF should be fine. Just need get a ton more from a starting staff. However they get it.
AngelsFan1972
I agree as well. I don’t know if I’d give up on him just yet.
Taylor Ward is a good example of sometimes it takes time to “just figure it out”. He was up and down and thrown in at multiple positions for a number of years.
He is very frustrating to say the least.
RyÅnWKrol
They didn’t do a poor job of developing Jo Adell. First round picks tank all the time and then Mike Piazza becomes a Hall of Famer. The only thing keeping Jo Adell from being a successful major leaguer is Jo Adell. In the end it’s about what is going on between the ears. A good portion of a baseball player’s development is how they develop themselves. Jerome Williams once admitted he didn’t live up to his hype because he didn’t work hard enough. That’s what The Natural was about. Player development is not involve babysitting.
outinleftfield
Yes. He should be non-tendered in the offseason.
Tim Stewart
outinleftfield – Adell is fine. He is still young. He has put up inconsistent numbers, something that comes with inexperience. He seems to being increasing his good production times. He hit great in August and for the year he got 20 HRs and 15 steals and was one of the best in MLB in hitting with men in scoring position, not to mention being one of the best fielding right fielders with a cannon arm. I can assure you he will not be non-tendered.
outinleftfield
Adell is not fine. He is bad. His offense was typical for him, meaning substantially worse than MLB average at an 88 OPS+. Overall he put up a 0.7 WAR in 130 games, barely above replacement level and well below MLB average so far this season.
A month of decent hitting does not make him worth the raise he is going to get in arbitration. He hit .277/.361/.485/..846 with RISP which is tied for 63rd in MLB. Not one of the best. Not even close.
He is barely above average defensively in RF with a 1 OAA. fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?lg=all&sea…
Time to cut him loose.
HalosHeavenJJ
This is great news for opposing hitters.
Ok Yankees Fan
Rumor Has It, Adell is really hurt.
outinleftfield
Hopefully that is the end of Adell’s tenure with the Angels.
AngelsFan1972
Why would you non-tender him? He is under team control for many more years. He would not cost them anything extra. At the very least, bring him back to spring training.
outinleftfield
He is a BAD player. He had an 88 OPS+ and has never been able to be even approach MLB average as a hitter. His WAR at 0.7 was barely over replacement level and far below average. His defense was barely above average at a 1 OAA.
He is arbitration eligible this off season. and will get a big raise in arbitration this offseason. If he wants to sign as a minor league free agent and with an invite to camp, that would be ok. But giving a guy that will be 26 next season more chances is just not smart. Get a real OF. Someone that is at least MLB average. Santander will be a FA this offseason and he can actually hit.
AngelsFan1972
Based on your description of “how bad he is”, why would he get a big raise?
Arbitration is to reward those who play above the league minimum.
outinleftfield
You really need to look into how arbitration works. Arbitration estimate systems like the one this site uses show that Adell is looking at a raise to between $1.9 and $2.1 million in his 1st year of arbitration eligibility. Roughly tripling what he is being paid. That is a big raise.
Players that are not non-tendered are pretty much guaranteed a raise and that raise is not 100% dependent on actual on-the-field performance. Time played is considered performance in arbitration and regardless of how bad he played, Adell will have played in at least 130 games. Adell also has 20 HR, which weighs heavily in arbitration. What doesn’t is WAR, OPS or stats like wRC+ and OPS+ that show him as far below average.
What, pray tell, is the league minimum?
Dumpster Divin Theo
Adell be roiling in the deep
