Joshua Palacios Elects Free Agency

By Anthony Franco | March 31, 2025 at 11:23pm CDT

Outfielder Joshua Palacios elected minor league free agency after being outrighted by the Pirates, according to the MLB.com transaction log. Pittsburgh had designated him for assignment during the final week of Spring Training. Palacios cleared outright waivers for the second time in his career, which gave him the right to choose free agency instead of accepting a minor league assignment.

Palacios landed with the Bucs in the Triple-A phase of the 2022 Rule 5 draft. He made a career-high 91 appearances the following season, hitting .239/.279/.413 with 10 homers. Palacios held his 40-man roster spot throughout last season, though he spent a decent chunk of the year on optional assignment to Triple-A. He hit well in the upper minors, posting a .291/.372/.489 line with five homers over 208 plate appearances. Palacios got into 23 big league contests and hit .224 with a pair of longballs.

Originally a fourth-round pick of the Blue Jays, Palacios debuted with Toronto in 2021. He logged limited action with the Jays and Nationals before landing with the Pirates. The lefty-swinging outfielder is a career .230/.286/.364 hitter across 433 plate appearances. He has a much more impressive .303/.388/.485 slash in more than 700 trips to the plate in Triple-A.

    A+ decision

Escape this loser franchise. Or at least try to. Can always go crawling back because not like they develop prospects and are loaded with outfield depth.

It’s not only a loser franchise, it’s a toxic franchise. “Escape” is
      undisputedly the appropriate word here.

He stunk up here. What’s that say about him if the Pirates send him down?

Exactly. If the “lowly, loser, toxic…blah, blah blah” franchise couldn’t use him, what’s that say about him at the moment? Best for both.

What’s it say when the guy couldn’t break the 40 man roster in a terrible franchise?

The White Sox should sign him. He probably has more to offer than Travis Jankowski at this point.

Palacios hits the ball hard. He seemed to be making progress with plate discipline and reducing his strikeouts. At this point, he just needs an extended opportunity even if it’s strictly as a platoon piece.

Clearly Skenes does not belong. He’s out of our league. Trade him now before TJ happens.

I would be worried that the most useless GM in baseball would ask for prospects that wouldn’t have the talent to make a strong difference on the major league roster

Paul-I respectfully disagree.Cherington would get very good lower level prospects, but they would become worthless in two years with his developmental system.

Another weak if not pathetic excuse for an offense in last night’s game
10 strikeouts, 0 walks, 4 hits and only 1 run

Shelton, arguably the worst manager in baseball, sits Cutch who accounted for one of their 2 runs in Sunday’s game with a solo homer, benched for last night’s game while worthless Pham achieves another 2 strikeouts and no hits

The bullpen which was supposed to be a strength is already showing that was a misconception

In 5 games, 4 of them losses, they’ve scored a total of 15 runs and have struck out a total of 45 times

Return Mlodzinski back to the bullpen. There was a reason they moved him there originally.
Cherington needs to bring up one of the youngsters to start.

Reading through all of the Pirates news today and landed on this one with an urge to comment on the big picture. All of these roster changes and lineup changes that we have witnessed in the past two (three or four?) decades (with some exceptional periods) makes me consider how much roster and lineup stability factors into any team’s success. How many of us would be at our best when facing the uncertainty of what the next days or weeks have to offer in terms of what will be asked of us? Are we at our best when we are worried about our job security? The recent Pirates have a lot of uncertainty by way of ownership management and on-field management. It’s an ugly experiment that never seems to end. I wonder how ownership, GM, VP, field manager, development department would respond to this.
