The Red Sox announced some minor injury-related transactions today involving three right-handed relievers. Nick Burdi, who was on the 60-day IL with a foot contusion, has been reinstated and optioned to Triple-A Worcester. To make room on the 40-man roster, Luis Guerrero, who was on the 15-day IL with a sprained elbow, was transferred to the 60-day IL. In addition, Zack Kelly (oblique strain) has been reinstated from the 15-day IL and optioned to the minors.
Burdi, 32, was a second-round pick by the the Twins back in 2014 but didn’t make his big league debut until 2018 as a member of the Pirates. He struck out an impressive 38.3% of his opponents from 2018 to 2020, but did so in just 12 1/3 innings of work total as he was dogged by a series of elbow problems. He missed the entire 2021 season before re-emerging at the big league level with the Cubs in 2023, for whom he made just three appearances before he was sidelined once again due to appendicitis. He later pitched for the Yankees but battled hip issues before signing a minor league deal with the Red Sox this past season and having his contract selected in May. He’s spent most of his time as a member of the 40-man roster on the 60-day injured list due to a contusion of his right foot, however.
That laundry list of injury woes has left Burdi to total just 30 1/3 innings of work total for his career, which spans more than a decade in professional baseball and parts of six big league seasons. He’s struggled to a lackluster 5.34 ERA in that time as well, although it’s worth noting that his 31.2% strikeout rate and 3.84 FIP both indicate he’s pitched better than those lackluster results would imply. His strikeout rate is down to 23.1% in Boston this year, but he’s posted 5 1/3 scoreless innings across four appearances. He’ll head back to the minor leagues and serve as non-roster depth for the club going forward.
Making room for Burdi on the 40-man roster is Guerrero, a rookie who made his big league debut last year. He’s made 22 appearances while shuttling between Triple-A and the majors since then, and has generally pitched quite well with a 2.63 ERA and 3.49 FIP in 27 1/3 innings of work despite a lackluster 17.6% strikeout rate. Guerrero was shelved in late June due to an elbow sprain, but the injury appears to be serious enough that he’ll need to miss at least another month. He’ll now be ineligible to return to the majors until August 27 at the absolute earliest, but given the nature of elbow injuries it wouldn’t be a shock if Guerrero ends up being out for longer than that or even potentially not pitching again this year. No timeline for his return to action has been provided by the Red Sox at this point.
As for Kelly, the 30-year-old is in his fourth season as a member of the Boston relief corps. He’s struggled with his results this year, posting a 5.56 ERA in 22 2/3 innings of work, though a 3.63 FIP and 24.3% strikeout rate both offer at least some reason for optimism about his ability to turn things around now that he’s healthy and back to pitching. Of course, he’ll first need to prove himself at the Triple-A level given that the club’s middle relief mix is currently occupied by pieces like Jorge Alcala, Jordan Hicks, and the newly-acquired Steven Matz.
Oh, good… Zac Kelly to the rescue.
Maybe that’s why Breslow didn’t add to the bullpen (Matz? He can’t be any better than Bernardino).
It’s an options/analytical thing with ownership. Having Bernardino in reserve is better than having him on the roster but not having Matz in reserve. Very unfair as BB didn’t deserve the demotion.
Bernardino has been over used and has looked gassed on the mound. The trip to Worcester might just be a chance to rest him without a phantom IL stint
Rsox, wish I thought of that but it plays on his pay and service time so it’s still unfair in my view.
True but it’s a loophole they can exploit so they are
Rsox – That was the case in June, he was definitely gassed.
But in July he was rock solid, In fact since June 28 he didn’t allow an earned run in 13 innings during which he gave up only 5 hits and 5 walks.
So if he was gassed again, his pitching didn’t show it. I think the Matz acquisition was just insurance against a future injury.
Looking at just their raw numbers, Bernardino has been the better pitcher this year too.
Bernardino has become a favorite of mine, a random RP who has been good.
How is it Zac Kelly to the rescue when he’s on Worcester. . Reading is hard.
“In addition, Zack Kelly (oblique strain) has been reinstated from the 15-day IL and optioned to the minors.”
Kelly will be in Worcester.
I am exaggerating of course but I dont think I have ever seen Kelly record an out.
Bernie could use some rest. He’s gonna be leaned on heavily down the stretch. He’s been lights out lately.
Astros had 14 LOB.
Red Sox win was a nice one.
Second place.
hayzee – This time you’re right, very good win. Buehler was not sharp, but he managed by getting a couple DP’s.
It also helped the Astros were without Pena and Alvarez, and their SP sucks. LOL!
Buehler needs to get his command back sooner than later. He could be a useful starter. I’m curious to see May. I like Matz out of the pen for now. All three of these guys have higher ceilings than they’ve shown lately. It will be interesting to see what they get out of them.
Criswell pitched well. There’s a lot of depth in the pitching as well as talent. That’s what gets them to the promised land, all those game 7 losses (1967, 1975, 1986) and many other postseason failures were due to lack of pitching depth. You can also factor in the injury curse ( Tony C, Jim Rice, and yes, Tom Seaver).
Hayzee – Why did they swap Gio with May?
Hayzee – You forgot to include 1946 in the Game 7 losses
I didn’t watch that game and didn’t follow the team and wasn’t born and I could ask my older brother but he was only 5 so he might not remember and my dad isn’t around to ask.
Not sure what you’re asking.
Hayzee – May was supposed to pitch today.
How are the Giants doing?
Ghost – They don’t start the regular season until Sept 7th @ Washington.
A win tomorrow gives them a 9-6 record over what was a very tough part of their schedule (Cubs, Phils, LAD, MIN and HOU). And this coming after a 10 game win streak. Kids are looking good. Remy is a LHP assassin. Let’s go Gio.
So true, Swan. Sox have the hardest schedule in the MLB after the all star break but the kids are performing as advertised. Great mix of vets and kids. It will be fun to see how far they get this year!
Its not a coincedence that the team got hot once Devers was gone.
Wait, you think entitled, overpaid, me first babies are bad for the team?
Swan – I’m definitely happy with the results but the Sox have had more than their fair share of good luck. They caught the Twins, Dodgers and Astros at a perfect time and were very fortunate to not face guys like Ryan, Yamamoto, Glasnow, Snell or Ohtani on the mound. The dropped popup in Philly was divine intervention. LOL
Let’s hope the offense gets out of their slump because guys like Roman and Duran can’t carry the offense every game.
Giolito is suddenly pitching today. I’d more than bet it has to do with his team option for 2026. He has a clause that if he pitches under 140Ip, the team can enact a 14M option for 2026. If he pitches over 140, he gets unrestricted FA. He most likely went to brass and said he didnt want to be skipped because he needs every start to get over the 140 and get a longer/better aav deal this offseason.
Good point. The Red Sox have 50 games left. If Giolito starts today and pitches every 5 games, he can possibly exceed 140 IP. He has 87.2 IP before today’s start. So, 10-11 more starts at 5-6 innings per start would put him over 140 IP. He doesn’t have much room for error.
And why would the brass say yes?
Because they wouldnt want a disgruntled pitcher with 139 innings pitched starting in a deciding playoff game.
You don’t think Giolito would want to pitch well the rest of the season if he were going to be a free agent?
He’d be more likely to tank it if he was under contract.
Im not following you. If he pitches less than 140 innings, Giolito would be “under contract” for 2026, because his team option would kick in. So that is the scenario I describing where he would “tank it”.
Why would he “tank it,” if he knew he was under contract with Boston next year for 14M?
Why would he “tank it” for any reason? All that does is hurt his future earnings. He;s having a great year.
You saying he “went to the brass” and said “pitch me tomorrow or I tank it” is super odd.
Whoa “tank it” is YOUR WORDS not mine.
Where did I say “pitch me tomorrow or I tank it”?
I just requoted you to keep it simple. Its Super odd, you brought the expression into the conversation, then get argumentive and try to say I said it.

You got a bone with me or somethng? Never heard of Ghostofwhoever. What was your name yesterday?
Red Sox:
Offense:
4th in Runs Scored
Pitching:
8th in ERA
Defense:
4th in Defensive Runs Saved
Tracking upwards in all three catagories even with the tough schedule.
Being 4th in defensive runs saved gives them a look of being a good defensive team. They still lead the league in errors. The Sox have 3 positions where they standout in DFS
catcher , centerfield, and right field. We still gotta tighten up the D.
“They still lead the league in errors”
I’d say the exact opposite. Leading the league in errors is such a small part of the defensive game, yet its the first stat novices look at when judging defense. After all, DRS includes all plays including errors in its calculation. Yet, it still considers the Red Sox defense 4th in the league.
Wrong ,/!!
A side note. The Red Sox are 10 games over .500 since shipping Devers out. The Giants are 11 games under .500 since Devers joined their team. Devers is a cancer and Breslow excised that tumor from the Red Sox clubhouse and now its healthy.
