Tylor Megill Undergoes Tommy John Surgery

By Darragh McDonald | September 23, 2025 at 5:20pm CDT

Mets right-hander Tylor Megill underwent Tommy John surgery yesterday. Anthony DiComo of MLB.com was among those to relay the news. Megill will miss the remainder of this year and likely all of 2026 as well. It was reported last week that he had been recommended for the procedure.

The news doesn’t come as a shock. He has been on the injured list since June due to right elbow inflammation. He had begun a rehab assignment in August but was shut down in early September due to renewed soreness. As mentioned, he was recommended for surgery a few days ago, though he was still considering other options. It seems he couldn’t find a viable non-surgical alternative and decided to go under the knife.

The 30-year-old has generally put up decent numbers for the Mets over the years. In total, he has thrown 409 2/3 innings over five seasons, allowing 4.46 earned runs per nine innings. He has struck out 24.3% of batters faced, given out walks at a 9.3% clip and kept the ball on the ground at a 42% pace.

His volume of major league work has been capped by a few factors. The Mets have often had him just outside the top five of their depth chart, meaning he has been shuttled to Triple-A and back a number of times, depending on the overall health of the staff. He has also had a few injury absences of his own, including shoulder strains in both 2022 and 2024. He has only once surpassed 90 innings in a big league season and has never hit 130.

This year was Megill’s first arbitration season and he is making a salary of $1.975MM. He can be controlled for two more seasons via arbitration. He’ll be in line for a raise for next year, though he’ll be a bit limited by the fact that he only made 14 starts this season. The Mets could tender him a contract, perhaps bumping him into the $3MM range, speculatively speaking. They wouldn’t get anything in return for that investment in 2026, as the odds of him returning late in 2026 would be very low, but they could then keep him around for 2027 at about the same price.

They will have a few weeks to decide if they think Megill’s 2027 worth that kind of multi-year investment. In addition to the money, they will have to think about the roster ramifications. There’s no IL between the World Series and the start of spring training. If they want to keep paying Megill over the next year-plus with the plan of having him be a part of the 2027 club, he would have to take up a roster spot through this winter. He could then be put back on the 60-day IL during the 2026 season, though he would have to retake a roster spot again in the 2026-27 offseason.

Regardless of that decision, he won’t be part of the club’s rotation plans for the next year. The Mets will go into this offseason with their potential 2026 starting group including David Peterson, Clay Holmes, Nolan McLean, Jonah Tong, Brandon Sproat, Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea and Christian Scott.

Tough break. Didn’t he have a TJ procedure earlier in his career? I might be thinking of someone else….

    Never 😈

Trevor is going to the postseason. Wish Tylor would have missed the postseason only due to the Mets’ collapse rather than this truly unfortunate injury. Hope Tylor returns healthy and successful.

This makes a minimum of three players the Mets will carry on the 40-man all winter with no chance of them pitching at at any time next year. And we’re still waiting on Reed Garrett.

Mets article up two hours, and only a few Mets fans comments. Yep, far lower turnout than when they were winning. I’m not surprised.

    Must be Jets…um…Giants…um…Liberty…um…Nets…um…Knicks season now?

How about those Marlins? or the Dolphins? maybe the Heat? surely they are worth talking since you seem to love New York sports then anything Florida related

Yep @GoTopes. Marlins, right behind the Mets for far less $100s of millions are worth talking about. And the Heat, the team that has won championships in this century…and within the last 50 years are worth talking about. And the Dolphins, while just as lousy as the Jets, actually have more Superbowl titles and a season no other team has matched yet.

Hmmm…If you want, we can even talk hockey if you want.

Wow is that all must be so amazing being such a sad sack that is all you do your a complete disgrace to all Florida fan bases and just drag them down and give them a bad name please keep going on how great is being a fan of the Dolphins and how Tua could drop because of his own team is failing him? or how about the Marlins pocketing money and refusing to spend while you sit there and cry about Kim Ng? I could go on about the Jags, or how the Heat are in the saddest division in the NBA along with the Buccs in Football but sure keep going on about how much of a great and wonderful person you are that you have zero compassion for a guy getting hurt and is going to get surgery. I have no pity for some creature who lacks a soul.

I love someone calling someone ‘ignorant’, in a post that includes a run on sentence, and adds grammatical gems like “…your a troll…” And ends the post with missing punctuation.

          Ignorance truly is bliss!

Oh no! someone is attacking me for my grammar because they have no relevant argument! What shall I do? oh woe is me I can’t believe how clever and cunning they are using a tactic that no one has ever thought of and that brings so much to the table on the topic of baseball!

Yep…rooting for a baseball team that has won just as many championships as the Mets in three less decades of existence, who currently stands a few games behind those Mets while being $100s of millions cheaper is truly suffering.

Man, I don’t know how bad it can get. I would hate being a fan of one of those teams that hasn’t won a championship in more than 35 years…or a fan of a team with one of the top 9 longest championship droughts in MLB…or the longest championship drought in their division. That must suck for fans of those teams. That must be true suffering.

I would rather root for the armies of the underworld then root for any of the teams in Florida there is nothing great about them and I am not missing much. What have the Marlins even done in the past 20 years? the Mets at least have made it to world series and make the playoffs more often. The Marlins can’t even do that its like watching a pig rolling around in mud and I would rather see that then a joke of a franchise that does nothing but pocket money and refuse to spend.

I’ll go with a longer sample of years. What have the Mets done in the last 38 years compared to the Marlins?

Marlins have two World Series championships. The Mets have won how many World Series championships in the last 38 years?

Is it worst to root for a team that actually wins championships while the owner is thrifty or to have ownership that spends tons of money for failed seasons? Way over $300 million in payroll and added luxury tax payments for a team that won’t even win 85 games this year, and will barely finish above that thrifty team in the standings.

Living in the past is a Mets thing. You all squawk like it’s 1986 when you actually had a championship team. As of 2025, you’re a traditional choker. How’s that for getting with the times?

And to fall in line with the poster you defended using the last 20 years he cited, but now with the Mets. What have the Mets done in the last 20 years that everyone remembers? Hmmm…oh yeah…they have epicly choked away seasons in September three times – being eliminated by the Marlins on the final day of the season in all three…2007, 2008, and 2025!

Oh the irony since this clown keeps bringing up the past because that is all you do and bring nothing relevant because the dead fish have no future nor any one cares about them not even you since all you talk about is the Mets tell me what is it like being able to think and talk nothing about one thing your whole sad life? Its funny seeing you do nothing but act like a fool for everyone to see I am glad I enjoy showing other people that you have no life because there’s more to life then the Mets but only you are weak enough to choose that for yourself.
