Bo Porter Hoping For Another Managerial Opportunity

By Nick Deeds | October 20, 2025 at 9:59am CDT

Angels coach Bo Porter is hoping to get another chance to manager in the majors, as he told The Athletic’s Britt Ghiroli recently. More specifically, Ghiroli writes that Porter is “very interested” in the current managerial vacancy in Anaheim.

Porter, 53, was previously the manager of the Astros from 2013-14. That stint in Houston did not go especially well, as the club went a combined 110-190 under his guidance in those two seasons. Outside of that managerial stint, Porter’s previously served as the third base coach with the Diamondbacks, Marlins, Nationals, and Braves. He was initially hired as the first base coach in Anaheim but was moved to third base in May. He also played parts of three seasons in the majors with the Cubs, A’s, and Rangers.

For Porter and any other former managers hoping for another shot, the current landscape is certainly a favorable one. There are seven teams currently hunting for a new manager. While the Giants seem to be closing in on their decision, searches are still ongoing in Anaheim, San Diego, Baltimore, Minnesota, Atlanta, and Washington D.C. while the Rockies have not yet even begun the managerial search as they sort out who will run the front office going forward. While it seems as though Porter is more broadly interested in a return to managing, he specifically highlighted his desire to be considered for the job in Anaheim again after interviewing for the role back in 2023 before it ultimately went to Ron Washington.

“I would enjoy managing the Angels because I’ve been there the last two years, I’ve made an investment there,” Porter told Ghiroli, “The relationships have already been fortified.”

He went on to note that he’s made his interest in interviewing for the job known to club GM Perry Minasian. As noted by Ghiroli, at one point it seemed as though the Angels’ managerial search might be a quick one given future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols’s status as the favorite. Since then, however, Pujols has also interviewed with the Orioles while the Angels have begun to interview other candidates. That seemed to suggest a more wide open search, but Ghiroli reports that some of the candidates the Angels were previously reported as hoping to interview for the position have not yet been contacted by the Angels.

That could be taken as an indication that the tide is shifting away from a wider managerial search, though it’s also possible the club is waiting for more information on Pujols’s candidacy before more fully conducting a wider search. After all, Pujols was viewed as the heavy favorite for the job at the outset of the offseason and was known to be actively discussing a contract with Angels brass less than two weeks ago. Of course, it’s also possible that the Angels are simply opting to take their time with their search for a new manager. That would make particular sense if the club has interest in interviewing any personnel from the Dodgers, Mariners, or Blue Jays organizations given that all three of those clubs are still in the playoff mix at this point.

After what happened to Ron Washington, the Angels job has to be a least favorable of all the openings.

Yeah it’s crazy how they had the same manager for 18 years and now they basically fire their manager every year now. Bo porter also was not a good manager in Houston so He’ll probably have a quick hook too.

Even though scioscia started getting angry at every GM he had I give him credit for somehow winning a World Series in Anaheim

He is probably too old for the job but someone like Scott servais might do well

That’s a tough job to fill with talent. Any prospective manager worth anything sees that the owner will never give him a quality pitching staff. We have one of the worst farm systems, shotgun player development, and zero depth, not to mention no autonomy to manage the game as he sees it should be managed. What a poop sandwich.

Best of luck to him but with his previous managerial stint which wasn’t successful he’ll have a difficult time finding another job managing

He did what he was hired to do, tank repeatedly to get good draft picks. MLB changed the rule after find the astros were deliberately doing so. Not the first or last time the astros were caught cheating….

Hopefully, Minneapolis, Denver and Cumberland can consider Porter in addition to Anaheim.

Whomever it is, it’ll be moreno calling the shots, minasian using a computer to make in-game decisions and the manager thinking he has a minutia of say so when he actually has none. Baseball is run via computer now, the manager is just the puppet/fall guy.

While I may agree the sport’s continued focus is on analytics, the manager is still an important part of the team.

Leadership, culture, mentoring, and a clubhouse presence during practices and games bring together the analytics with the players’ egos and personalities.

Anyone who’s played organized sports would tell you a head coach/manager is important, whether there’s more analytics involved or not.

The Houston Astros was a complete rebuild when Bo Porter was the manager and everyone knows that. Here’s a a previous article discussing Mark Kotsay as a Manager. Let’s keep the same energy….look at
Mark Kotsay is only 179-307 over three seasons as the Athletics’ skipper, though the poor record doesn’t fairly access his managerial ability given how little Kotsay has had to work with on a rebuilding roster.

There’s a clear double standard at play and without question Bo Porter deserves another shot at managing a ballclub!!!

The A’s owner is infamously cheap. There’s a reason you can make with Mark Kotsay’s situation.

Arte and his cronies are not good at evaluating talent. Hence the current state of the organization from top to bottom.

Porter might be a great choice here. He might not. Judging that by whether or not he gets the job is wrong, though.

There were several comments coming out of Houston when Porter was fired that his managerial style was a detriment to the development of young players. Apparently Porter also liked to leave daily affirmations in the players lockers which i could see many players not being fond of

    Bo Porter deserves a shot.
The Angels’ third base coach knows the players, knows the culture, and wants to interview for the manager role. Why not him? Familiarity matters—especially when the clubhouse needs stability.

    But here’s the twist:
Albert Pujols was reportedly Arte Moreno’s chosen one. The deal didn’t happen. Why?

Was it the “personal services” contract—$1 million a year for 10 years that complicated things? Did Arte expect Albert to take the job under that old agreement? Or did Pujols push for a renegotiation, and Arte balked?

there should be another opening in Boston as far as I’m concerned, the fact Alex cora still has a job is so infuriating after that showing against the Yankees

Bo Porter DESERVES another managing opportunity — he can make your team a winner in short order. (I just hope your team doesn’t happen to be my team, too.)
