Tyler Locklear will begin the season on the injured list while rehabbing from elbow and shoulder surgeries, leaving the Diamondbacks thin on the first base depth chart. The left-handed hitting Pavin Smith will get at least a share of the regular at-bats, but given Smith’s struggles against southpaws, a right-handed bat would be a useful platoon partner or a candidate for DH time. With this in mind, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7FM radio believes the D’Backs will “kick the tires on a reunion with Paul Goldschmidt” this winter.
Goldschmidt spent the first eight seasons of his outstanding career with the Snakes, making six All-Star appearances while hitting .297/.398/.532 with 209 homers over 4708 plate appearances. Traded to the Cardinals prior to the 2019 season, Goldschmidt kept up much of that form over his six-year run in St. Louis, but he has just about been a league-average bat (102 wRC+) over his last two seasons and 1188 PA with the Cardinals and Yankees. Playing with New York last year, Goldschmidt had a hot start but faded down the stretch, leading the Yankees to give Ben Rice an increasingly large share of the first base playing time.
Now entering his age-38 season, Goldschmidt may no longer be an ideal everyday option, but he had a .336/.411/.570 slash line in 168 PA against lefties in 2025. These splits will get him looks from multiple teams in free agency, and returning to his original team in a timeshare with Smith seems like a pretty decent fit for all parties.
More from around the National League…
- Joe McEwing and the Cardinals “mutually agreed to part ways,” according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. McEwing spent the first two years of his playing career in St. Louis in 1998-99, and returned to the organization as manager Oliver Marmol’s bench coach prior to the 2023 season after over a decade on the White Sox coaching staff. The bench coaching job lasted only one year, as McEwing spent the last two seasons as a special assistant to president of baseball operations John Mozeliak. With Chaim Bloom now taking over the PBO role, it could be that Bloom is looking to make some more organizational changes, or McEwing could be moving on to explore other coaching or front office roles.
- The Giants seem to be nearing an unique managerial choice in Tony Vitello, as it would represent the first time that a big league team has hired a college coach who had no prior experience in any aspect of pro baseball. The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly looks at some of the details involved in San Francisco’s pursuit, and suggests that Max Scherzer could be a free agent target if Vitello is indeed hired. Back when Vitello was an assistant coach at the University of Missouri, he recruited Scherzer to pitch at the school, and the two have stayed great friends over the last two decades. The Giants are known to be looking for pitching, and Scherzer could essentially replace Justin Verlander as the rotation’s seen-it-all veteran voice. As Baggarly puts it, “who better than Scherzer to ensure that Vitello gets full buy-in from even the most skeptical veteran player in the room?” The 41-year-old Scherzer posted only a 5.19 ERA over 85 innings in an injury-shortened regular season for the Blue Jays, but he delivered a strong start to get the win for Toronto in Game 4 of the ALCS.

Just what I was thinking, the Giants are just a college coach and a 41-year-old pitcher away from a championship.
Verlander worked out so well for them they want another one
It definitely would be a good idea to get them both in the same clubhouse again it’s not like the 2023 Mets would happen again
That would be so fun to watch.
Dbacks signing Goldschmidt would be immensely popular with the fan base and give Locklear more time to develop.
I agree with the first half but IMO Locklear does not need more time to develop. He’ll be 25 at the start of next season. He’s been in the minors for 4 seasons with over 1200 ABs. He needs a chance to get some big league ABs. He doesn’t have anything left to prove in the minors.
Yeah, Locklear batted .293/.388/.495 in AAA. (Keep in mind – he played in the PCL but in a home park with negative offensive factors) He needs to get AB’s. But Goldy would be a killer platoon IF he’s willing to accept that kind of role.
I’ll always dislike Scherzer because he gave up on the team during the playoffs when he was briefly with the Dodgers.
What do you mean? He pitched in 4 games in the playoffs with a 2.16 ERA with a 12.4 K/9 and even got a Save. He was great for the Dodgers both in the regular season (1.98 ERA in 11 starts) and playoffs.
Yep good ol “dead arm Max”. One of the more hated short-term Dodgers along with Machado.
Dodgers fans are so spoiled
That increases the likelihood he signs with the Giants. Dudger$ fans hate him
Until he eventually quit in what should have been his second start in the NLCS because of a “dead arm” forcing Walker Buhler to start in his place.
Dead arm is a real thing. Have you seen how intense Scherzer is? You think he just wanted to sit out and collect a check? Ya, that seems super likely.
Recycled managers is the best way to go.Wouldn’t be surprised if Bochy manages again.More experience means better results.
Nope not really plenty of examples of first time managers having success
it’s sarcasm boss
Who is sarcasm’s boss?
I doubt it
Sarcasm’s boss is Mr Satire.
Surely you jest.
Scherzer a win away from a trip to the series and you’ve already got him in SF. Love the rumour mill.
How do you know that Scherzer won’t want to keep playing for the World Series Champion Blue Jays?
Because reality is a pita.
This comment won’t age well after either today or 2 weeks from now
@sad tormented neglected mariners fan
No worries. I generally don’t care…
Because he wants to play for his buddy and San Francisco is a lot cooler than Toronto.
@KirkRueter
Okay, fair enough!
Joe McEwing leaving St. Louis means one thing. It makes room for Yadier Molina to hop right into that role. Give him a year on the Major League staff. They will move Daniel Discalso into McEwing’s role and make Molina into the bench coach for next year, and then slide Molina into the manager for 2027..
I hope you are correct about a method of moving Molina into the Cardinals manager’s seat. With Marmol — playoff contention is out the window!!
Molina would definitely be 100% better at handling a pitching staff over Marmol !!!
You do realize that Marmol led the team to a division title and the playoffs in 2022, don’t you? The last three years have been mostly talent issues over managerial issues.
@Landirac whatever you say, Oliver.
And you do realize that 2022 had the team built up by and for Mike Shildt!!
I’m not saying Marmol is a bad guy!!!
However —- check your statistics over the past 3 years…. and especially in 2025.
How many games has Oli Marmol blown by leaving his starters in the game until the games had gotten completely out of hand…. after his starter had given up 5+ plus runs?
(I will say this —- strictly on my observation —- and when he did use them, Marmol did handle his “bullpen” much better in 2025, but not his starters).
I will say, the Cards are the only team that had no pitching injuries this year. Very important because we had no pitching depth at all.. That speaks to his handling of pitchers i think.
First of all, Mozeliak and Gircsh built that 2022 team, not Shildt. Anyway, that just showed how good of a manager Marmol can be when he actually has a really good team to manage. It also completely contradicts your claim that Marmol can’t manage a team to the playoffs.
Anyway, aside from times when the starter got shelled so quickly that the game got out of hand before the starter could reasonably be removed, no, Marmol didn’t do that often at all. You don’t usually take a guy out in the 2nd or 3rd inning just because he’s already given up a few runs, or you could ruin the bullpen. However, when the starter does get shelled, which did unfortunately happen way too often this season, it’s often good strategy to leave the starter in even longer to save the bullpen for the next day when you’re probably going to lose anyway.
Meanwhile, Marmol has done a good job of managing the lineup and bullpen over his tenure. Most notably, the Cardinals have outperformed their Pythagorean record each of the last 3 years and by quite a large margin for the last 2 years.
Well, one relatively minor injury to King, but yeah, that’s practically unheard of.
Well, not counting when Marmol didn’t actually have a bullpen to speak of in 2023 aside from Helsley, Romero, and (after the trade deadline) King.
I’m always a fan of players returning to the team they’re known for. Why the rockies haven’t signed D.J. Lemahieu is a wonder to me
“Why the rockies haven’t signed D.J. Lemahieu is a wonder to me.”
Because he can’t play anymore.
Check his savant page. He can still be a utility/bench guy and his bat will play up in coors.
He’s cooked
The Rockies had no problem paying Charlie Blackmon $13M for his age 37 season.
Granted , that was the “old regime,” but ownership is unchanged.
And, to be fair to Blackmon he played league average.
Charlie. Retirement, shave, and a haircut
away from absolute anonymity.
Goldschmidt could be for the D’backs next season what Evan Longoria was in ’23; a veteran presence and mentor while serving as platoon 1B/DH
Also!!! Goldschmidt not only has gas left in his tank left. He’s a “Class Act!!!”
Giants don’t yet know when Eldridge can take over 1st base, especially full time.
Outbid AZ for Goldy to provide a year’s insurance and a short-side platoon partner for Eldridge, as he acclimates to the bigs.
He’s always mashed at Oracle and wouldn’t shy away from it.
I don’t think Goldschmidt’s glove holds up enough.
Yeah, he’s no Gold Glover anymore, but maybe still good enough in limited starts…he’d probably be used as often to PH as he would to start.
And this from Google: “According to advanced defensive metrics, Paul Goldschmidt was a significantly better fielder in 2025 with the New York Yankees than in 2024 with the St. Louis Cardinals.”
If that’s true, he’ll likely still be an OK defender for another year.
Why don’t the Giants just re-sign Verlander, assuming that he wants to return to the team for 2026?
Because I don’t think anyone can assume Verlander wants to return. If Verlander does, then I think he’d be their first choice. I don’t think it’s a choice of preferring Scherzer over Verlander. If Verlander wants to go to a team with a better chance of getting wins, then Scherzer would be an option.
I think the thought process is that Verlander would have other suitors on the open market, possibly contenders.
So, the Giants hire a college coach and then possibly sign three players who aren’t much younger than him. That will work out well I’m sure!
👌
You’ll never know, it’s baseball. It may or may not work out.
Plus, Tony Vitello hasn’t been hired yet. Save the sarcastic reactions for later.
Giants getting younger with a Scherzer signing to replace Verlander LMAO
See comment above. Same deal…
Man, if goldy goes to AZ, the diamondbacks will destroy with their prospects and injuries coming back this offseason.
Goldy and Pavin Smith could be a decent 1B platoon. I think Locklear will be on the IL for quite a while and may not be ready to return to the majors directly after his rehab is complete, if at all this year.
