Alex Wilson Opts Out Of Contract With Indians

By Jeff Todd | March 21, 2019 at 5:34pm CDT

Righty reliever Alex Wilson has opted out of his contract with the Indians, per a club announcement. He will head back onto the open market in search of a better opportunity elsewhere.

Wilson, 32, had been competing for a spot in the Cleveland bullpen. Had he earned a nod, his minor-league deal would have provided a $1.25MM salary and $750K in potential incentives.

Though he has maintained a 3.23 ERA over 320 2/3 MLB innings over his career, including 61 2/3 frames of 3.36 ERA ball last year, Wilson was non-tendered this fall by the Tigers. He has never had the peripherals to support the results, but Wilson has certainly defied them for quite a long stretch. He turned in 8 2/3 innings of action this spring, allowing just two runs on five hits while compiling seven strikeouts against two walks.

there have been injuries since then, plenty of teams could use an extra arm.

Ain’t much better opportunities available than in Cleveland’s bullpen.

I don’t understand why he doesn’t have a major league offer. Teams are focusing so much on these cyber stats. He doesn’t throw 95 mph, he doesn’t strike out a guy an inning. All he does is he gets guys out.
    Sign him already.

For those that take FIP too seriously, remember, he will only be pitching with a full team of fielders behind him.

The Indians should publish a press release stating that the club asked Wilson if he could win them a world series.

They have a dearth of guys just like him at Iowa. Would be a waste of money.

Some players defy the “peripherals” and it’s time that talent was reflected in the algorithms! Like my Dad the math teacher taught me, “you can make math say anything.”
