Giants Option Andrew Suarez

By George Miller | May 26, 2019 at 12:16pm CDT

The Giants have optioned left-handed pitcher Andrew Suarez to Triple-A, tweets Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic. His spot on the roster will go to right-hander Sam Coonrod, who has been recalled from Triple-A.

Suarez’s demotion comes after making just two starts for the Major League club, neither of which yielded particularly promising results. In ten innings of work this season, Suarez has conceded three home runs and ten earned runs while walking as many batters as he has struck out.

Of course, the 26-year-old Suarez is still young and relatively inexperienced, having worked just 170 1/3 career innings in the big leagues. Though the early returns for the 2019 season have been ugly, his rookie numbers were far more encouraging, suggesting that Suarez is at least worthy of consideration for a spot in the rebuilding Giants’ starting rotation. For the time being, though, his tryout for new president of baseball ops Farhan Zaidi will be put on hold and Suarez will head to the minors to iron out his issues.

As Baggarly notes, it appears that Suarez’s absence will clear the way for Dereck Rodriguez to reclaim his spot in the rotation. However, that is not certain; Tyler Beede is another candidate to replace Suarez in the rotation. Rodriguez, for his part, has not enjoyed much more success than Suarez in 2019, but after a brief stint in the minors he could be given the chance to show that his rookie success was no fluke. Sam Coonrod, meanwhile, will pitch out of the bullpen as he makes his Major League debut.

Coonrod, a fifth-round selection of the Giants in 2014, is a 26-year-old right-hander who began working out of the bullpen in the minors last season after beginning his professional career as a starter. Coonrod has played at the Triple-A level in 2019, pitching 18 innings in as many games, striking out 30 batters and walking 11. Though his 7.00 ERA is unsightly, his peripherals are considerably more impressive and point to MLB-caliber stuff.

White Sox Option Nick Delmonico

By George Miller | May 19, 2019 at 4:54pm CDT

The White Sox have optioned outfielder Nicky Delmonico to Triple-A Charlotte, tweets James Fegan of The Athletic. While a corresponding move will be made official tomorrow, it’s expected that rookie outfielder Eloy Jimenez will be activated ahead of the series opener versus Houston.

Delmonico has scuffled out of the gates this season, posting a disappointing .586 OPS in 20 games for the White Sox. Following a promising rookie season in which a 13.9% walk rate carried him to a .373 OBP, Delmonico’s plate disciplined has trended steadily downward, culminating in a 6.3% walk rate that has fueled a .281 OBP in 2019. What’s worse, the 26-year-old’s strikeouts have moved in the opposite direction, with 35.9% of Delmonico’s 2019 plate appearances ending in strikeouts, compared to just 18.7% in 2017. Of course, the hope is that a stint in the minor leagues will allow the young outfielder ample opportunity to reverse these troubling developments and make the necessary adjustments to return to the big league club.

Assuming that Jimenez takes Delmonico’s place on the active roster, it will mark his first appearance since April 26, when he suffered a high ankle sprain. The highly-touted rookie has thus far experienced a mixed bag of results in the Majors, with a .674 OPS and 25 strikeouts in 85 plate appearances.

Quick Hits: Clevinger, Rays, Rangers, Kelley, Phillies, Quinn

By George Miller | May 19, 2019 at 3:54pm CDT

In a promising development for the injury-stricken Indians, right-hander Mike Clevinger is steadily progressing towards beginning a rehab assignment, writes Mandy Bell of MLB.com. Clevinger, who was able to make just two starts before landing on the injured list with a strained back, has thrown a couple of bullpen sessions, and will build up his workload in subsequent sessions before embarking on a minor league assignment, which should come in the near future. Expect Clevinger to conduct a few more bullpen sessions to increase his pitch count before returning to game action in the minor leagues. Certainly, the news should inspire some optimism among Cleveland faithful, for whom the presence of the intense Clevinger on the mound will be especially comforting, considering the team’s unfortunate struggles with injuries to Corey Kluber and Danny Salazar. As Bell notes, June 7 marks the earliest date that Clevinger could be activated.

Here are the latest tidbits from the baseball world…

  • The Rays will deploy minor-league infielder Jake Cronenworth as a two-way player moving forward, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Cronenworth was used as the “opener” yesterday for Triple-A Durham, reportedly flashing a fastball at 94-96 miles per hour. The 25-year-old, a 7th-round selection of the Rays in 2015, pitched at the University of Michigan. It bears mentioning that Cronenworth has been plenty successful with the bat in 2019, slashing a cool .367/.460/.511 in 37 Triple-A games this season. This, of course, marks latest experiment for the innovative Rays, who also feature high-profile two-way player Brendan McKay in their farm system.
  • Rangers reliever Shawn Kelley, who Thursday underwent a procedure to remove lumps from his throat, is back throwing live batting practice, tweets Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, who further notes that Kelley could even be activated as early as Monday. Kelley last appeared from the Rangers on May 4, and was subsequently placed on the IL with an infection, though it was unclear just what Kelley was dealing with. Of course, the Rangers will breathe a sigh of relief as they hope to welcome back Kelley, who has been one of the club’s most productive relievers.
  • Phillies outfielder Roman Quinn, currently on the injured list recovering from a strained groin, will hit exclusively from the right side when he returns to action, notes Matt Gelb of The Athletic (subscription required). Quinn, a natural righty, began hitting from both sides at the beginning of his professional career per the Phillies’ request, but injuries have stunted his development as a switch-hitter. As a result, he has informed manager Gabe Kapler that he will bat only as a righty, where Quinn has enjoyed considerably stronger platoon splits, upon his return from the injured list.

Minor MLB Transactions: 5/19/19

By George Miller | May 19, 2019 at 1:26pm CDT

We’ll use this post to track the latest minor moves from around baseball…

  • The Blue Jays have agreed to a minor-league deal with left-handed pitcher Buddy Boshers, tweets Scott Mitchell of TSN. Boshers, who formerly pitched in the bigs with the Angels and Twins, is the owner of a 4.59 ERA in 86 1/3 career innings. He spent last season toiling in Triple-A with the Astros and Pirates organizations, posting a 3.32 ERA. Per Mitchell, the 31-year-old has has been pitching in the Mexican League; however, he’ll now return to affiliated ball, joining the Jays’ Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo.

Mariners Designate Mike Wright

By George Miller | May 19, 2019 at 12:18pm CDT

The Mariners have designated right-handed pitcher Mike Wright for assignment, according to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times (Twitter link). In a corresponding move, right-handed reliever David McKay has been recalled from Triple-A. The move leaves the team with an open spot on the 40-man roster.

The news—marking the second time Wright has been designated in the last month—comes in the wake of an ugly outing last night, in which Wright was shelled to the tune of five runs in two innings amidst a 18-4 drubbing at the hands of the Twins. Despite the unsightly 9.00 ERA Wright has posted in his brief stint with the Mariners, who acquired the 29-year-old in late April, Wright’s peripherals seem to indicate better underlying performance than during his stay in Baltimore. In seven games with Seattle, he has pitched to a 3.29 FIP, a much better mark than the 7.68 FIP that earned him a one-way ticket out of Baltimore.

Nonetheless, it evidently was not enough to compel the Mariners to keep him around, and Wright could once again find himself on the move should a team choose to take a chance on his stuff. If not, Wright could remain in the Mariners organization and serve to provide minor-league depth. Of course, this is the latest disappointing development in a rocky career for Wright, who has posted a 6.08 ERA in 253 MLB innings.

Meanwhile, 24-year-old David McKay will join the Mariners’ active roster and is slated to make his Major League debut. The right-hander has appeared in 14 games for Triple-A Tacoma, striking out 34 batters in 21 1/3 innings of work. Acquired early last season from the Royals for cash, McKay features a fastball/slider combination that could make him a suitable relief arm in the middle innings.

Cardinals Expected To Activate Carlos Martinez

By George Miller | May 17, 2019 at 2:00pm CDT

May 17: Martinez is likely to be activated before tomorrow’s game, per MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch.

May 12: Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez, who has yet to appear in an MLB game this season, could rejoin the Cardinals as early as this weekend, per Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Martinez has been dealing with shoulder issues for the last couple of months, holding him out of action for the first quarter of the season. He recently began rehabbing in the minor leagues, making one appearance at Class-A and three more at the Triple-A level, all out of the bullpen. It would be a welcome sight for the Cardinals to add Martinez, who has an impressive history both as a starter and a reliever, to the existing bullpen mix. He offers a high-leverage option, as well as a potential multi-inning threat to bridge the gap to closer Jordan Hicks.

Goold notes that Martinez is scheduled to pitch for Memphis on Sunday and Springfield, the Cards’ Double-A affiliate, on Wednesday, at which point the Cardinals will evaluate whether he is able to join the Major League team for its weekend series in Arlington against the Rangers. If the team is indeed comfortable adding Martinez to the roster, he will slot into a bullpen role, bolstering a unit that has enjoyed stellar performances from Hicks, John Gant, and John Brebbia. On the other hand, the club could decide that Martinez needs more rehab time and revisit the issue at a later date.

Of course, Martinez returning would require a corresponding roster move. In that case, Luke Gregerson is perhaps the most obvious candidate to be replaced, though Dominic Leone could also be fit for a demotion, with his ERA ballooning to an unsightly 8.20 after an impressive start to the season. Gregerson, who is owed $5MM this season, has made just three appearances for the Cardinals in 2019, but has allowed 3 runs in those games and doesn’t have a history of success with the Cardinals; the veteran righty posted a 7.11 ERA last season, his first in St. Louis.

Tigers Place Tyson Ross On Injured List

By George Miller | May 13, 2019 at 3:26pm CDT

May 13: Manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters today that Ross isn’t feeling any better and could schedule an examination with the same surgeon who performed his initial thoracic outlet surgery (Twitter link via MLive.com’s Evan Woodbery).

May 12: The Tigers have placed right-handed starter Tyson Ross on the 10-day injured list, reports Chris McCosky of the Detroit News. It’s a nerve issue in his right elbow that will keep him out of action for the foreseeable future.

Certainly, this development is most unwelcome for a Detroit ballclub that has already endured several injuries to starting pitchers. Michael Fulmer and Matt Moore are both sidelined for the remainder of the season, and Jordan Zimmermann recently joined them on the injured list. With Ross joining them, the Tigers will be pressed to find solutions from within the organization.

Of course, those losses have been mitigated by the performances of Matthew Boyd and Spencer Turnbull, each of whom has dazzled with dynamic strikeout stuff, emerging as the most productive Tigers starters. Daniel Norris has joined the rotation in the wake of the slew of injuries, though there appears to be a dearth of options behind the existing slate of starters.

Ross has endured a season of inconsistencies thus far in 2019, posting a lackluster 6.11 ERA in his first 7 starts. His 1.39 K:BB ratio has been unimpressive, as walks have once again inhibited Ross’s success. It’s an unfortunate break for Ross, who struggled through a frustrating start in Saturday’s matchup with the Twins, allowing six runs in five-plus innings. It’s unclear just how serious the nerve issue is, or how long it will keep Ross on the shelf, but the outlook is certainly not a rosy one for the Tigers.

Orioles Notes: Draft, Rutschman, Bundy, Hyde, Hays

By George Miller | May 12, 2019 at 3:53pm CDT

With the first-year player draft fast approaching, Orioles fans may want to acquaint themselves with Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman, who could be the team’s next top prospect. The Athletic’s Dan Connolly offers a detailed profile of the college junior and his path to prospect stardom. With the O’s holding the first selection in June’s draft, general manager Mike Elias and company will have their choice of the best amateur players in the country. However, Rutschman is doing what he can to make Baltimore’s pick an easy one; the switch-hitting catcher has emerged as the favorite to have his name called first by commissioner Rob Manfred, earning rave reviews from scouts, coaches, and teammates alike. On the baseball diamond, Rutschman earns praise for his outstanding defense at a premium position, which he pairs with an impressive combination of power and contact at the plate. At a pivotal juncture in the Orioles’ rebuild, the organization’s choice at the top of the draft could be a franchise-altering decision,

Here’s the latest news out of Baltimore…

  • In Connolly’s latest for The Athletic. he offers thoughts on all things Orioles, including a drop in velocity that prompted manager Brandon Hyde to yank Dylan Bundy from his last start in just the fifth inning. The source of the declining velocity is unclear; it could merely be a continuation of a trend that began in 2016, or there could be a health issue, though Bundy claims he is healthy. Regardless, it’s a situation to monitor going forward, whether because of injury, or because the O’s might consider tinkering with Bundy’s repertoire.
  • More from Connolly: Brad Ausmus, who succeeded Jim Leyland as the Tigers’ manager from 2014-2017, offers some advice for rookie manager Brandon Hyde, who finds himself in a similar situation, having to follow in the footsteps of the respected Buck Showalter. Hyde certainly has been, and will continue to be, subjected to his fair share of scrutiny in his first month-plus at the helm of a Big League club. Commandeering a rebuilding team, Hyde has had to balance outsiders’ demands to win with the mandate to identify and develop young players around whom the organization can construct the next great Orioles team.
  • Talented outfielder Austin Hays, a preseason favorite to play his way into in the Orioles’ starting outfield this season, will make his season debut in the coming days. After suffering a thumb injury in March, Hays should join one of the O’s low-level affiliates shortly and work his way through the ranks, hopefully culminating in an extended stay in the Majors, where he could contend for a starting role. Hays has long tantalized fans with eye-popping minor-league numbers, though he struggled in his 2017 debut. After a disappointing 2018, the hope is that Hays will actualize his offensive potential and force his way into Baltimore’s lineup.

Yankees Claim Breyvic Valera

By George Miller | May 12, 2019 at 1:41pm CDT

The Yankees have claimed infielder Breyvic Valera off waivers from the Giants, according to The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly. He will report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for his new club. To make room for Valera, the Yankees have transferred first baseman Greg Bird to the 60-day IL, adds James Wagner of The New York Times.

Valera, 27, was designated for assignment by the Giants not long after he was acquired from the Orioles. The Yankees will mark his fifth club since 2017, having spent time with the Cardinals, Dodgers, Orioles, and Giants over the last three seasons. He has amassed just 86 MLB plate appearances owing to a lack of opportunities, though Valera is the owner of an impressive BB:K ratio in his minor league career.

Valera will join a Yankees infield that has been hit hard by injuries early in the season, though the emergence of Gio Urshela and Miguel Andujar’s return to Yanks’ lineup will likely limit Valera’s opportunities to receive playing time. For the time being, he slots into a organizational depth role behind the likes of Tyler Wade and Thairo Estrada.

Giants Claim Andrew Moore, Designate Breyvic Valera

By George Miller | May 5, 2019 at 4:43pm CDT

The Giants have claimed right-hander Andrew Moore off waivers from the Rays, according to Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic (Twitter link).  Moore will report to San Francisco’s Double-A affiliate in Richmond.  To create a 40-man roster spot for Moore, the Giants have also designated infielder Breyvic Valera for assignment.

Valera’s stint on the Giants’ 40-man roster has come to an end before he appeared in a game with the team, which acquired Valera in January when he was designated by the Orioles. In 24 games at Triple-A this season, Valera has posted a .257/.397/.338 slash line, including an impressive 16-to-10 BB:K ratio. The 27-year-old Valera has made only 86 MLB plate appearances and has produced a .529 OPS across parts of the last two seasons, which he spent with the Cardinals, Dodgers, and Orioles.

Moore has appeared in only 11 games in the Major Leagues — nine starts with the Mariners in 2017 — posting a 5.34 ERA in those games. Triple-A has not treated him well this season, as Moore has conceded 9 home runs in 17 1/3 innings while walking as many batters as he has struck out. Moore, a former second-round selection of the Mariners, was recently DFA’d by the Rays, but will hope to make a home in San Francisco. He is just 24 years old and is not far removed from successful seasons in the minors in 2016 and 2017.
