There's saddening news out of Minneapolis today, as Twins general manager Terry Ryan has announced, via press release, that he has been diagnosed with a treatable form of cancer:
"During the course of a routine annual physical, Twins team physician Dr. Vijay Eyunni detected a lump in my neck which required further review. A subsequent biopsy confirmed the lump was cancerous, leading to an official medical diagnosis of Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Thankfully, incremental tests indicate the cancer appears to be confined to my neck and has not spread to other regions of my body."
According to his statement, Ryan is being treated at the renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. (about an hour south of the Twin Cities) as well as Minnesota Oncology (in the Twin Cities metro area). Said Ryan: "I’ve been assured this form of cancer is treatable and remain optimistic about my return to good health in the near future." (The entire statement can be read here.)
Ryan will not be attending Spring Training in Fort Myers, but the Twins will send assistant GM Rob Antony and vice president of player personnel Mike Radcliff to Florida to oversee the Spring Training operation.

Treatable or not, cancer stinks. However I am glad to read that it is treatable. Hopefully one day all cancer will be treatable or, even better, cancer will just go away. Get better soon Mr Ryan!
Yes, squamous cell carcinoma is treatable. I know this personally having had 5 such circumstances–2 on my left hand, 2 on my face, and 1 on my right forearm. The major concern is that any runners have not penetrated too deeply and that the runners are completely removed during the surgery. I have felt fortunate it was not melanoma, as I am sure that Terry Ryan feels.

Skin cancer is one of the easiest cancers to treat. Squamous Cell Carcinoma sucks but he’ll be fine as long as they caught it at an early stage.
This particular form is. Melanoma is a skin cancer and is one of the deadliest cancers.
I know I’m a MOHs tech and help remove skin cancer in a dermatology clinic. As long as they catch it early, he’ll be fine.

The doctors found a relapse of Squamos Cell Carcinoma in my wife exactly one year ago tonight, she only lived two weeks :(. Best of luck Terry, from a dedicated Twins fan

Terry Ryan is one of baseball’s good guys. A man who knows talent and has dedicated his life to the game we all love. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. Twins nation loves you TR!
