Odds and Ends: Colon, Koskie, Atkins

By Tim Dierkes | January 28, 2008 at 7:00am CDT

We take a break from your regularly scheduled Erik Bedard drama to bring you some random links.

  • The White Sox made an incentive-laden offer to Bartolo Colon, but Colon apparently physically disappeared at the thought of it.  There’s a joke here, somewhere.  Kenny Williams also almost kind of hinted at implying that he made some kind of effort to acquire Bedard.
  • A brief note from the Sun-Times – outfielder Brian Anderson may be traded to an NL team (Marlins?).
  • It’s possible that Corey Koskie makes another comeback attempt.  He’s gone through a postconcussion syndrome nightmare.
  • The Denver Post’s Troy Renck is always going over to Rockies players’ houses and chilling in their living rooms.  This time, it was Garrett Atkins.  Atkins says the Rox made a multiyear offer to him a year ago more similar to Jeff Francis’ (4/13.25) than that of Aaron Cook (3/30) or Troy Tulowitzki (6/31).  That offer was to cover Atkins’ three arbitration years and have a club option for his first of free agency.
  • I recently did a Q&A with Science Fiction Baseball.
  • Website note: I am leaning toward doing a full redesign.  New logo, widen this baby, brighten her up, increase the font size, and yes, do away with the white on black type.  Lots of room for improvement with this clunky old design, we all know it.

Bedard Traded To Mariners?

By Tim Dierkes | January 27, 2008 at 11:31pm CDT

UPDATE, 1-27-08 at 11:29pm: Geoff Baker checks in again.  He notes MacPhail’s careful choice of words and reiterates that a deal appears close.  He seems to think only a Peter Angelos objection could kill it, but would consider that a crazy thing for him to do.

UPDATE, 1-27-08 at 10:55pm: Jason Churchill, referencing three sources, believes this to be 99% done.  He is hearing Jones, Tillman, Sherrill, Tony Butler, and Kameron Mickolio to the O’s.  He’s not sure whether Bedard extension talks are a factor but you have to think that might be holding it up.  He’s also unsure on whether the O’s would include anyone else with Bedard.

UPDATE, 1-27-08 at 10:25pm: Jon Heyman of SI.com says "there is still some internal debate in Baltimore over the deal."  Heyman’s heard that Jones, Tillman, and Sherrill are possibilities but the Ms may keep Jeff Clement.  Heyman then goes on to add that the O’s might send Brian Roberts to the Cubs for Sean Gallagher and Felix Pie if they finish the Bedard deal.

UPDATE, 1-27-08 at 9:32pm: No deal, says Andy MacPhail.  He denies that Jones is headed to Baltimore for a physical.  This Baltimore Sun link also has quotes from Jones, which kind of started the whole thing.  Someone must’ve said something to him.

UPDATE, 1-27-08 at 8:45pm: A high-ranking Orioles official told the Baltimore Sun that a trade has not been completed.  Meanwhile MLB.com’s Jim Street believes the Ms will send Jones, Sherrill, Chris Tillman, and a minor leaguer for Bedard.

FROM 1-27-08 at 7:49pm:

According to Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times, Adam Jones is headed to Baltimore in an Erik Bedard trade.  Jones was pulled from the Lara Cardinals’ lineup today in Venezuela.  Cardinals manager Luis Sojo confirmed Jones went to Baltimore for a physical.

Baker got in touch with reliever George Sherrill, who has not been informed of any involvement in a trade.  When we hear about the other players involved we’ll post it here.

Roberts Deal Trailing Bedard Trade?

By Tim Dierkes | January 27, 2008 at 10:39pm CDT

SI.com’s Jon Heyman believes completion of an Erik Bedard trade to Seattle could be followed with a trade of Brian Roberts to the Cubs.  He says that would be "possibly for Felix Pie and Sean Gallagher."

Two seasons of Roberts for twelve of Pie and Gallagher doesn’t seem wise for the Cubs.  To me, Pie and Gallagher seem likely to at least become solid Major Leaguers.

Granderson Has Multiyear Deal Talks

By Tim Dierkes | January 27, 2008 at 7:46pm CDT

According to Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers had preliminary talks earlier this month with Curtis Granderson’s agent regarding a long-term contract.  The Tigers initiated the conversation, but they didn’t discuss length or amount.  Must’ve been a short meeting, right?

Morosi suggests the Tigers’ recent model of buying out one year of free agency could result in a deal for Granderson of five or more years.  He’s eligible for free agency after the 2011 season.

Granderson, 27 in March, hit .302/.361/.552 for the Tigers in ’07.  If he figures out lefties, he’s a superstar.  The Fielding Bible’s panel of experts ranked his defense fifth among center fielders.

Fake Bedard Rumor

By Tim Dierkes | January 27, 2008 at 3:19pm CDT

Hi everyone, Tim Dierkes here.  There is a weird fake rumor going about, being propagated by someone pretending to be me.  I am not sure what email address it comes from, but it claims some kind of Erik Bedard/Angels nonsense.  It’s 100% fake and wasn’t sent by me.

The only thing I ever send to my mailing list subscribers are exact copies of the posts on MLBTR, nothing else.  And my email address is dierkes@gmail.com.

Nathan Waits For Santana Resolution

By Tim Dierkes | January 26, 2008 at 1:42pm CDT

The AP has some quotes today from Joe Nathan and his agent.

  • Whether he re-signs with the Twins or hits the free agent market after the ’08 season, Nathan isn’t playing for a discount again.  He said: I think we definitely gave them a really good deal this last time around. I felt I left quite a bit of money on the table, to be honest.  This time around, we expect it to be different.
  • Nathan’s agent expects the Twins to resolve the Johan Santana situation first.  They reached out to the Twins and had some conversations, but it didn’t go beyond that.  Now the ball is in the Twins’ court to come to Nathan and his agent.  Or, Nathan could be traded anytime between now and July 31st.
  • Nathan would like to pitch for seven or eight years.  As for his next deal, what do you think?  Four years, $60MM?

Introducing Cork Gaines and Matt Birt

By Tim Dierkes | January 26, 2008 at 1:21pm CDT

I’m proud to announce two more additions to the MLBTR Bullpen.  At this point I will probably not add anyone else.  However I am keeping all the applications on file and regret not being able to act on many excellent ones.  Thanks for all the interest in helping out.

Cork Gaines is the editor and lead writer for Rays Index. He is a Tampa native and University of Iowa graduate that is currently lost in New York City.  Despite this, he still maintains his status as a Tampa Bay Buccaneers season ticket holder and often makes trips back to the Bay Area just because he has an urge for a grouper sandwich from Hurricane and to see people wearing jorts. In addition to Rays Index, Cork wrote a chapter in the "The Hardball Times 2007 Season Preview". Outside of baseball writings, Cork has authored several scientific publications about whales and DNA that are written in a language even he does not understand.  Cork can be reached at corkgaines@gmail.com.

Matt Birt is currently a high school English teacher in Ohio, hoping to head to graduate school in the fall to pursue his doctorate in English Literature.  This is Matt’s first sports writing gig, though he has held a post at a small-town newspaper covering school board meetings and potluck dinners, and he can often be found about town in various restaurants and coffee shops writing and rewriting his fantasy baseball line-up (a compulsion only the fantasy baseball gods can fully understand).  His most bizarre baseball memory involves a Cincinnati Reds winter basketball barnstorming team, his best friend’s house, and Barry Larkin in bib overalls staging a wrestling battle royale with his two brothers, Stephen and Byron.  Matt can be reached at mattbirt.mlbtr@gmail.com.

Brian Bannister Q&A, Part 2

By Tim Dierkes | January 26, 2008 at 11:58am CDT

Royals starter Brian Bannister was kind enough to answer questions for MLBTR readers.  Check out Part 1 and Part 3 of the Q&A, also.

MLBTR: What’s the most misunderstood aspect of succeeding in baseball by typical fans, sportswriters, and announcers?

Bannister: There are two things that make baseball unique from other sports. One, baseball is a game of skill that is accentuated by the physical tools of the person performing those skills. Most people superficially judge a position player solely on size, strength, and speed, when his eyesight, balance, rhythm, hand-eye coordination, and mental makeup are much more influential factors in his future success. It is when a player embodies all of these qualities that we get our superstars and hall-of-famers. I would much rather face a hitter with "80" power and "80" speed but bad strike zone discipline than one with no power and a .400+ OBP. Over the course of time, the hitter with the .400+ OBP is going to hurt me much, much more, especially if he is surrounded by other good hitters.

Secondly, whether you like it or not, baseball is a game of randomness. We play outdoors (mostly) in changing elements and field dimensions, and each pitch results in a series of events that can go in either teams favor. One thing that I have have come to accept is that just because I train hard physically, I practice perfectly, I prepare diligently, and execute a pitch exactly as I wanted, it can still result in a home run. In golf, if you analyze all the variables correctly (lie, distance, slope, wind, etc.) and execute your swing perfectly, it will result in a great shot. Not so for a pitcher or a hitter. A hitter can swing the bat perfectly and it will result in an out more than six times out of ten. Therefore, as a pitcher, I study and play to put the percentages in my favor more than anything because I know that I can’t control the outcome in a single game or series of games, but over the course of a season or a career I will be better than average.

MLBTR: How will you prepare to face the Tigers’ everyday lineup?

Bannister: I have a good knowledge of and also a healthy respect for the Tigers’ lineup, and I have faced new additions Miguel Cabrera and Jacque Jones before. Edgar Renteria is the one new player that I don’t have any experience against.

I think the most important thing when preparing to face a lineup of this caliber is to be realistic and to recognize how they have been playing recently, because confidence level is everything with a good offense. If you look at good lineups, they tend to be extremely streaky, but their cold streaks will be much shorter than their hot streaks over the course of a season. During the hot streaks, teams and opposing pitchers tend to be intimidated by their offensive prowess, and games can be blowouts. In contrast, during the cold streaks they can seem to be a totally different team because they have very high expectations placed on them by the fans and media, and when they’re struggling, it tends to snowball.

When a good lineup is hot, the only thing you can do is throw strikes and not allow yourself to put hitters on base unnecessarily. They are going to get their hits, and when they get them, you don’t want a lot of runners on base. By keeping yourself ahead in the count, you can reduce your pitch count and hopefully their slugging percentage as well.

When a team is struggling at the plate, a pitcher can take advantage by expanding the strike zone, especially with runners in scoring position. Hitters that have had a drought of home runs/RBIs tend to press in those situations, and they will underperform their historical OBP because they are anxious to drive in runs and break out of their slump.

I will also apply this strategy to individual hitters within the lineup. I choose my spots to try and get outs while avoiding the hitters that are hot. A lineup is a constantly changing dynamic that requires a mix of planning, psychology, and quick adjustments in order to be successful.

Pirates Rumors: Bay, Nady, Capps

By Tim Dierkes | January 26, 2008 at 10:56am CDT

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has a few new Pirates tidbits today.

  • Jason Bay expressed displeasure with the Pirates’ lack of activity, but his comments were respectful.  He hopes to stay with the Bucs and win. Bay says he "found a whole different level of being in shape" this winter, which bodes well for a bounceback.
  • Kovacevic says Neal Huntington and Kevin Towers have been in touch this week regarding Xavier Nady but nothing is close.  Towers admitted publicly that he was looking at Nady and Matt Murton.
  • There’s been "little progress" on a multiyear deal for Matt Capps. The Pirates approached Capps earlier this month with three or four-year scenarios in mind.
