Five Teams Pursuing Jose Contreras

By Tim Dierkes | January 14, 2010 at 2:04pm CDT

At least five teams - the Cubs, Cardinals, Rockies, Phillies, and Padres - are named as suitors for free agent righty Jose Contreras in a tweet from Newsday's Ken Davidoff.

Perhaps Contreras' stuff will play up in the NL.  The 38-year-old posted a 7.2 K/9, 3.6 BB/9, and 4.92 ERA in 131.6 innings for the White Sox and Rockies last year.  He whiffed a batter per inning in his Rockies stint, though we shouldn't read into 17 innings.  Contreras averaged 92 mph on his fastball last year, so it appears something is left in the tank.  Swingman candidate D.J. Carrasco just got a $950K minor league deal with the Pirates; maybe Contreras will sign a similar deal.

I don’t understand the Cards interest…they either need to commit to going young or sign one of the better options on the market (Davis, Garland, ect)

Agree, with little left in the bank we need to look at Smoltz or middle relief. Should also look in to taking care of the hot corner. Freese is immature and can EASILY be arrested…..thoughts on Lugo at third?

Then who is gonna back up Ryan if (when ) he gets injured or back up skip or be a PH off the bench. We would close one hole and open up another.. Not worth it

Ha yeah, Thurston is long gone, and good riddance IMO… And how can you agree saying we needed a younger free agent pitcher like Smoltz? He’s 2-3 years older than Contreras! I say sign a 3rd baseman like Crede for 3-4M, and let one of the 3 or 4 young guns fight it out in the spring… One of them has got to be better than Wellemeyer!

Ummm… There is a guy on the roster that is being paid minimum. His name is Julio Lugo. He can play short.

I know why he’s not getting any interest in the AL…they’ve seen him pitch a few times.

He’d probably do well in San Diego.

Didn’t Contreras try to go to Japan, but they didn’t want him? Irregardless, why would anyone be interested in a fifty year old pitcher? I kid, kind of.

The only way I’m okay with the Cubs signing him is if its a minor league deal with a spring training invite. Give him an opportunity to earn his way on to the club and provide some sort of stability to the rotation until Lilly gets back. Then he can go to the pen. I think the Cubs are better served to take a risk on Sheets than on Contreras.

Jose Contreras still has it – he just doesn’t have it every 5th day for 162 games.

Man everyday that goes by the Padres are looking at lower an lower level of players….if they can get him for veteran Minimum maybe Petco could do him some good…but there are still a few decent pitchers available…..interesting for discussion though….

Listen, I like Jose more than most. I am very happy with what he’s done for the sox in the past, as well as being a pitcher who always would take the ball and pitch what he could. But no, he’s pretty much done. A low 90’s fastball doesn’t mean he can still pitch in the majors.

Now if he can throw that forkball like he used to, you won’t find a better mid rotation guy to go 3-4 outs. But I doubt that’s what he wants.

“the Cubs … are named as suitors for free agent righty Jose Contreras”

This has to stem from interest pre-Silva acquisition or on a minor league deal. Otherwise, he doesnt really make any sense at all with the number of starters we will be forced to carry on the roster.

But if Hendry really is targeting Jose, then, well, see my avatar. (or whatever that icon thingy is called)

NOOO! It stems from the Cubs looking through binoculars up at the Cardinals in the Central and flipping the desperation switch on.lol

Can’t believe they got Carrasco that cheap…why weren’t more teams interested in him? Rubber arm, quality innings, low low price. Guys not nearly as good as Carrasco are getting 3-4 times the money.

i agree man…i thought the phils would have kicked the tires on him instead of gettin baez for 2 years at a much steeper price…

The Padres need an innings eater, Contreras does not exactly fit that bill, prototypically.

Ya Hendry will sign Conteras to a 4 yr deal with an option for his fifth year as a present for his 55th Birthday. Total dollars $40 mil and a no trade clause

dont really like seein the phils on this list….i hope they are keeping their 5th starter option open to the wanganator…dude’s got great stuff, only been in the league 5 seasons, plenty of time to rebound from this injury. a transition out of the AL east will do him good, i hope the phils are in the mix when his name starts gettin tossed around…

Contreras is unhittable when he is on. I think he would do good as a long relief swingman for a team. Especially a NL team like the Padres that play in a cavernous ball park. St Louis wouldnt be bad because I think as long as the language barrier isnt a problem then Dave Duncan can make him into a serviceable pitcher. Every fifth day pitcher he is not. But when he has the fork ball working he is as good as they come. I know it had to break Ozzie’s heart not to be able to keep him.
