Padres Sign Mark Worrell

By Luke Adams 2 | January 7, 2010 at 6:27pm CDT

The San Diego Padres have signed Mark Worrell to a minor league contract, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com.

The 26-year-old right-hander was non-tendered by the Padres last month, after he missed the 2009 season following Tommy John surgery. Worrell was initially acquired by San Diego last winter, in the deal that sent Khalil Greene to St. Louis.

he was traded along with Luke Gregerson last off-season who ended up having one of the biggest seasons in baseball for a relief pitcher.

thats true. Their bullpen is the best part of their team not named Adrian Gonzalez. It was only a minor league contract though its not like they spend 5 million dollars.

Worrell is very unorthodox, if healthy he could be valuable to the team down the road. I am not sure why the negative feed back, pitching pitching and more pitching. He aslo had a very productive minor league career, I actually look forward to see what he can do healthy.

Obviously this is a minor move, but Gregerson was the “more” coveted player (in the Greene trade) from the jump anyways, so again I don’t understand the negativeness to a minor league signing.

It’s not so much negativeness as it is…sign someone who we can actually want to see play like every other team does… 2 AAA catchers and Worrell is what we have so far.

Every team makes these “minor” moves or signings, of course it would be nice to hear of a big FA splash but Hoyer and the FO have made it very clear that is not the case, having said that, what do you expect?

Hey, I am not satisfied with status quo but I am always looking for ANY minor improvement or signing and or trade.

I would like to see the Padres sign Jerry Hairston and possibly Khalil Greene but would that “satisfy” the fans? I don’t think so. Why focus on players who will never even be an option, knowing the financial situation and the teams needs?

I for one am glad that it has been a relatively quiet off season, that means thus far they (the FO) have yet to give in to deals the Padres and FO do not think would be a good baseball trade over a financial trade, thus far that has been the case.

Of course Adrian will be traded at some point, but MY point is I like so far how the new regime has operated, more strategically. IMO the fans do not need to know everything, don’t tip your hand.

I do like KT, but all too often I thought he said WAY too much. As much as I loath the lack of moves so far, I can only take that as a positive sign that they are not trying to just move players to move them and strictly dump salary.

As much as I would like to see the padres sign:
      Orlando Hudson
      Bengi Molina
      Erik Bedard

They wont give up the draft picks and the cash

Exactly what is going on with Greene right now? Without looking him up.. Is he currently on the Card’s roster even and has he overcame his anxiety issues?

Greene is looking for a major league contract, but not much has been said about his anxiety order per se’. He is a free agent.

Thank You. Almost always count on help here.

Greene could be of use if he can overcome that anxiety problem, he had some terrific seasons with SD.

No point on getting Greene when the Padres have a superior player manning shortstop already. Cabrera is going to turn heads this year.

For a back up! Not to take over for Cabrera! The Padres have yet to pick up a utility middle infielder, considering Greene’s problems that could be a fit IF HE wants to play, all indications so far say he does.

I highly doubt any team RELIES on Greene for an everyday role.
