Red Sox Likely To Activate Alex Bregman Tomorrow

By Anthony Franco | July 10, 2025 at 9:26pm CDT

It looks as if Alex Bregman will return to the Red Sox tomorrow. While the team has yet to announce the move, Chris Cotillo of MassLive reports that the Sox are optioning second baseman David Hamilton to Triple-A Worcester. That’d open the necessary active roster spot to reinstate Bregman from the 10-day injured list.

Boston’s star third baseman has been out since May 24 due to a significant quad strain. The Sox promoted Marcelo Mayer when Bregman went on the shelf. The 22-year-old has been the primary third baseman. He has a modest .272 on-base percentage through his first 37 big league contests. Optioning Hamilton suggests the Sox intend to give Mayer more runway, likely moving him to second base in the process.

Bregman had been on a tear before the injury. He’s hitting .299/.385/.553 with 11 home runs across 226 plate appearances. It was shaping up to be his best season since his MVP runner-up campaign in 2019. Bregman has a career-high average exit velocity and hard contact rate. He rejoins the Sox as they’re riding a season-best seven-game win streak. They’re in an important four-game series against a direct competitor in the Rays. Boston erased a two-run deficit to claim the first game of that set tonight.

This run has pushed the Sox to 50-45 and into possession of the American League’s last Wild Card spot. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has maintained the front office sees the team as buyers despite the Rafael Devers trade. Unsurprisingly, a team official told Sean McAdam of MassLive yesterday that the club isn’t interested in trading Bregman regardless of his contract status.

Bregman is playing on a three-year deal that allows him to opt out after either of the first two seasons. He’s very likely to retest free agency next winter unless the sides hammer out an extension in the intervening few months. Bregman and agent Scott Boras have each said they’re open to the conversation, but the team unsurprisingly has more pressing priorities with the amateur draft and trade deadline approaching. WEEI’s Rob Bradford reported tonight that the sides have yet to open extension talks.

    Not a surprise with Hamilton.

Let’s hope Cash continues to give gifts to the Sox this weekend!

The David Hamilton Experiment comes to an end—for now. FINALLY. They shouldn’t stop there, they should release this scrub. He’s totally useless.

Gotta love the Moron’s with idiotic takes here……….

Hamilton is not useless….. what he is, a fast guys that can play decent defense that is a product of what happens to guys that if they don’t get consistent AB’s…. he struggles. Put him on a team like the A’s or Marlins and he plays everyday he will hit between .240 and .270 with 40+ SB’s….. hit you 8 to 10 HR’s and drive in 40 to 60 Runs. All solid for one of those teams.
The amount of people that give up on these guys just because they struggle to find consistency, don’t understand what it actually takes to be successful.

It was about time. He has received far too much playing time for someone who has not contributed either offensively or defensively. We need to say goodbye to him. Wish Campbell had done better.

If not traded, he’ll be back in October as the 26th man if the Sox are in the playoffs. Glad Mayer got that key hit tonight. He’s on a long leash by default, Hamilton has not been good in the field or at bat and neither has been Campbell who is not yet hitting at Worcester. Rafaela should in my view be playing 90% of the time, just about all of it in center. I can though a situation happen if Mayer doesn’t turn it up where if an OFer is not dealt that he plays at second down the stretch in September to get all the lefty OFers in.

Wait – So you’re saying make Yoshida nothing more than a pinch hitter the remainder of the year? Then might as well release the guy and eat the ~$45M now since he won’t be rebuilding any trade value that way. LOL

That’s a real problem, isn’t it? You can bench those guys one at a time in rotation, messing up the top of your order every time you do so, but it is clearly less than ideal. Yoshida isn’t a better hitter than Duran, Anthony, or Abreu. So maybe you play a shell game over the next two weeks and then trade him for whatever you can get? But what I listed would be the goal that I’m aiming for.

Maybe somebody gets injured and resolves the dilemma that way. Not rooting for that though.

Wait – I’ve been on a roll with Story and Giolito, so I’m gonna double down on Yoshida ….. I say if he stays healthy he will put up an OPS between .850-.875 which would indeed be better than Duran and Abreu (not gonna include Anthony because I’ve got big expectations with him).

Yeah, I would expect an OPS south of .800 from Yoshida. If he can hit your range, that would be excellent. I just don’t see him as being in the same ballpark as Devers or Olson.

From 2023-2025, Abreu has an .806 OPS and Duran has a .810 OPS. Yoshida is a solid step behind them at .780, so he has a lot of catching up to do.

Wait – I have total confidence in him if he can stay healthy.

Remember, 14% strikeout rate in 2023 …. 5th lowest in the league

Then last year he improved to 12.4% ….. 8th lowest in MLB

His two years have been challenging because of the adjustment to America/MLB, the fatigue from adjusting to a more demanding MLB schedule, the thumb injury he played through and the shoulder injury he played through.

FTR – Seiya had a .770 OPS his first season, he’s improved by 100 points.

Matsui had a .788 OPS his first season, he got it up to .912

Rafaela, 19.4% K this year. Amazing progress for the kid.

Abreu with 16.7% K over the last two weeks (going back to the Toronto series) while slugging .718.

Seems the team is finally understanding the value of putting the bat on the ball and letting their athleticism take over. Story was talking about that the other day.

If they are no longer emphasising the home run swing, can they please get the cosplay Wally Head removed from the dugout? Nothing worse than a kiddy celebration because someone hit a solo HR when trailing by 6+ in the 8th inning. Its not very dignified when hitting a game winner, either. Seems more like a prank.

No, it’s “first 104 at-bats in MLB”. Process is more important than results at the moment for him, and if you actually watched the games you would see he actually has a pretty mature approach at the plate. He is capable of going oppo, making decent contact, seeing a decent number of pitches in his at-bats. The numbers aren’t there yet, primarily because he’s struggling mightily against big league lefties, He’s actually doing alright against righties. Nothing that profiles as a cause for concern at the moment. Cora needs to quit hiding him and let him play every day, and I am confident before long he will get more comfortable and his stats will begin reflecting that.

No. My issue is that they’ve got him trying to learn center field and first base WHILE he is struggling that hard at the plate. Teach him new positions during the offseason, or after he has figured out how to adjust to pitchers having adjusted to him. AAA is where he needs to be right now, but he should be doing nothing but 2B or DH.

Concur – Cora is simply the liaison between the field & the analytics, data hounds & Breslow.
Very few teams employ genuine field managers in this new Sabermetrics era of data collection to analyze, predict player potential and performance …as well as dictate & execute on field strategy.

Interesting, but Mayer has to move anyway. Moving Story would mean effectively moving two guys.

But more importantly, we are finally getting the Story that we paid for. I wouldn’t do anything to mess up the mojo.

In some sense Mayer makes more sense at SS because he has the stronger arm, but I totally agree with you that it doesn’t make sense to mess with this mid-season. That’s a swap you might consider in Spring Training.

I don’t get all this mistreatment talk. Campbell played 59 of 66 games at 2B in Boston. The rest were in the the outfield. He played CF and LF in the minors. That was not new to him. He did some drills at 1B, but never played there in a game. I don’t see mistreatment of Mayer either. Did the Red Sox mistreat Mookie when they brought him up and moved him to RF? You may be right, but I don’t see it.

Joe – I’m considering the long term construction of the team.

I doesn’t make a lot of sense to me to have Mayer be a SS in the minors, slide to 3B due to bregmans injury (not a *huge* adjustment considering your still reading the ball off the bat similar and making the same turns and throws), then have him learn 2B on the fly in the majors, when we know story is just riding out the end of his deal.

Mayer is around many more years than story. To me, makes more sense to get the kid settled in to his permanent home ASAP.

2B didn’t negatively impact story before. I wouldn’t think it all of a sudden would now.

It’s one thing if a guy shows a clear aptitude for handling multiple positions. Mayer has, Mookie did. Campbell wasn’t exactly tearing it up defensively either before he got sent back down. Now they’ve been talking about making him take reps at first and center in addition to second. Why? Clearly the biggest reason he was sent down is because he needs to focus on improving his hitting. Perhaps I’m wrong but that feels like they’re just throwing way too much at the kid all at once. They need him to hit enough to justify a 26-man roster spot, so why would they not give him the benefit of sticking with the position he is most familiar with so he can spend all his time honing his skill and approach at the plate? I hope my concern proves to be unfounded but that just feels like organizational malpractice to me.

I think playing the outfield is easier than playing the infield. So, I don’t see a problem with putting Campbell in the outfield occasionally like they were doing. His bat was improving after struggling for a month and I kind of wish they kept him up like they did with Rafaela last year which I think paid off. However, I’m guessing they envision him as a future 2B and he was making too many errors there. I can’t say for sure what is going on, but I doubt it’s something horrendous.

When Cora and his coaches told Mayer and Anthony to work on changing their swing to more of an uppercut for better launch angle, they both refused.

With KC, he does whatever he’s told, even when he’s not comfortable with their orders.

KC needs to man-up and demand they stop jerking him around.

People expect instant results from these young players. It took Duran 3 years to get there. Anthony probably had doubters when he was 5 for 45. Rafaella took 1/2 of last season to become more disciplined at the plate. He was hitting around .200 or below at this time last year. Even Pedroia took a couple of months while people doubted him. I think Campbell was rushed too soon, and I hope he gets it back in Worcester.

Just like this year, he heated up middle of last year ….. .813 OPS in July.

Wasn’t thrilled with it…. but understand this is what they have to do with the current roster construction.

What pissed me off is that Roman Anthony sat out on Friday… after Cora stated emphatically that he is playing everyday…. which one is it Cora?

This team is coming together just as intended. It looks like taking the Devers drama out of the equation has allowed the kids to flourish. They just need another quality SP and there is no reason this team isn’t a championship contender.

Well, playing the Nats & Rox for 6 straight games didn’t hurt, but this looks like a better team without Devers. On paper, we’re worse, but on the field, it looks better.

Past that, I’d like another RP as well. I’d bet a guy like Soroka would cost nothing but a lottery ticket and salary relief. And his numbers, imho, are better than they look.

IRT to adding an SP, I’d go outside the box and ask Cleveland about Bieber. They’ve paid for his rehab, and he has negative value to them this year, unless they get hot the next two weeks. They are on the hook for about $3M this year, a $4M buyout on the 2026 player option. If I were Cleveland, I’d save myself the $7M and trade him for a lottery ticket. For the RS, $7M is a lot for maybe 6 weeks, but if we get into the playoffs, he Bieber would get a lot more valuable.

And Gallen has sucked YTD, but been great in his last two starts (19/1) K/W).

We need Mayer to lock down the 2ndbase position. The Sox defense at 2ndbase has been terrible this season. Romy should have had an error there last night. He looked very smooth at 3rd. 2ndbase is his position going forward. ( barring injuries) It’s his time to cement his case as a major leaguer.

cdc – The NESN guys said a few days ago the Fenway scorer has been very hard on the Sox fielders, so I’m not surprised they changed what was an obvious error into a hit last night.

I also think whether or not it results in unearned runs is a factor. Buehler probably didn’t care about the scoring change because it didn’t affect his ERA, pitchers don’t care about their WHIP or BAA.

It would have been a very close play at 1st with Simpsons speed . Still should have been an error.
Buehler pitched OK-ish again. Murphy has been very good. Merloni said Whitlocks only going to go 1 inning going forward. Chapman, well done . Excellent come from behind victory.

cdc – This is where my analytical skills paint a different picture. I know for some people every win is a “good” win, but when looking a little closer some wins are more lucky than good.

The Rays came into the game scuffling, having lost 7 of their previous 10 games.

Their starting pitcher, Taj Bradley, came into the game with a 4.79 ERA and had given up 21 earned runs in his last 27 innings.

And what happened? He pitched 6 innings allowing just 2 hits and just 1 run.

It was the same anemic Red Sox offense we saw right up until they faced crappy Reds, Nats and Rox pitchers.

Then Cash made the hilarious decision to pull Bradley after just 88 pitches and bring in Baker, who was coming off a brutal pounding just 2 days earlier and had been traded just a few hours earlier.

A clearly unsettled Baker walked the first two batters and gave up a double to the third batter. Did he get pulled at that point? Nope, he was left in to give up the lead. As Merloni repeatedly stated, absolutely horrific managing by Cash resulted in a gift win for the Sox.

I’m not surprised about Whitlock, you just can’t plan to use him for 2 innings every 3rd game. You need to use him when he’s needed, not based on an advance schedule.

I want to clarify , I don’t want to trade Duran,.He is the most exciting player on the team,IMO. I truly enjoy watching him play. Also he is a dynamic leadoff hitter who turns singles into doubles/triples. I believe his teammates love him too. Right now the outfield is a position of strength. Can we obtain a # 2 starter without including a Duran or Abreu? Is it feasible to keep Duran, Rafaela, Anthony, Abreu along with Yoshida & Refsnyder for 3 outfield spots and DH ? Would a combination of Campbell ,Jh. Garcia, Arias, Tolle, ect. get a #2 starter.? I am a big fan of Tolle. I’m not down on Campbell,he is going to need time to get readjusted.

And keep in mind, with 5 OF and a fulltime DH, there’s only one backup infielder which takes away a lot of flexibility.

And before he was drafted duran played 3 years of college ball at 2B.

While rafaela spent a bunch of time at SS, and, had pretty poor results. (And was a international free agent, different level of experience than 3 years college on the bag)

Look at how long mookie was away from 2B and picked it back up due to years of it as his natural position. Duran may be similar.

Ceddane was a fish out of water in the infield. Of the two, you might wind up with better offensive alignment and defensive alignments switching duran on a trial basis…. let him take some grounders in practice at 2B, see how it feels and comes back to him is all I’m saying.

KC can maybe become a Brock holt type instead of hoping he learns 2B at a high level

GaSox – Mookie played 230 games at 2B in the minors, I don’t think college compares to pro ball.

When you convert a player in the majors, it’s often based on need and another player blocking (as Pedroia did with Mookie).

When you convert a player in the low minors, it’s likely because you suck at the position you played in college. LOL!

BTW – 50% chance of thunderstorms Tuesday evening, could be a long night. I just hope it’s not rained out. If it is, would they even reschedule for Wednesday? Even with the extra day off now, the union is a lot stronger than it was in 1969 (last time it got rescheduled).

Once he got to the higher levels in the minors Mayer had pretty consistently struggled against lefties. I’m not sure why people think he’s going to get better at that at the major league level. It would be nice if he did, but when you have an option on the bench like Gonzalez who can play 2B and crushes left handed pitching you kind of have to go with that option when your goal is winning games.

There are many examples of players turning perceived weaknesses into strengths. They mature, and make adjustments. Exposed to a higher level of coaching and video. I like Romy’s bat ,not his glove at 2nd. It’s Mayers time.

Maybe. Maybe not. Toro is a switch hitter. Against a tough on lefties lefty starter I can see Toro at 1B and Romy at 2B. Granted Toro doesn’t hit great from the right side of the plate but it’s still better than Mayer. I wouldn’t necessarily do that against every lefty starter, but definitely when it makes sense.

Ken – I get what you’re saying, but the difference between Toro and Mayer vs LHP is negligible and it’s important for the Red Sox to evaluate whether Mayer will improve vs LHP or if longterm he will ultimately be a platoon player vs RHP only.

If he doesn’t improve vs LHP over the next 3 weeks, perhaps he gets included in a trade for someone like Ryan.

Fever, Mayer isn’t going anywhere. You just don’t trade a player like him you’ve been developing and invested what they have in him.

You give a kid a season in the bigs of everyday playing, 500abs or more. it’s impressive he’s still hit while sitting 4 straight games due to lefty’s and being thrown around the diamond. Mayer is special, he’s going to win GGs. He also has shown he’s a big market brain, nothing bothers this kid and I’m so impressed by these young kids ability to handle Boston.

Last night was the first time I said hey, these guys could be really legit franchise players for years to come, and not just hoped.

cdc – I’m a busy guy so there are days I don’t visit here, especially on weekends. That’s why quite often I’m one of the last people to comment on new articles. And unless I can post something really short, I don’t use my phone. It takes me ten times longer to type on my phone, plus it’s difficult to pull up resources while doing so.

When I’m in Atlanta I won’t have my laptop with me, that always stays home ….. so whatever I post won’t be too long.

Yes it’s difficult to keep up with conversations, especially because I frequently have more than 10 unread notifications which means they start dropping off without me getting a chance to even see them. That’s partially on me though, I’m far too active than I should be and I’ll probably be posting less often here … but still too often for some people’s liking. LOL!!

I don’t mention my other places here, that would not be cool to use this place to promote other places (mentioning is a form of promotion).

I think tonight’s game was more meaningful, Crochet’s first complete game shutout and against a team that doesn’t suck! Zero walks and 9 strikeouts, absolutely brilliant! One thing is certain, he needs to be well rested. They should give him an extra day off at least a couple times a month. He’s not pitching again until next Sunday, so that’s a full 7 days off and he will not pitch Tuesday which I’m glad.

Yes Rafaela has been great, I thought it was funny last night in the 9th he was just trying for a single up the middle ….. see that’s the new hitting approach, I love it! Let’s hope he can stay above .750 OPS all season, that’s all I ask. I know opponents will soon adjust how they approach him, hopefully he will be able to make adjustments to their adjustments. LOL

You’re preaching to the choir here, I’ve praised Marcelo many times for his defense, versatility and calm demeanor. Him and Roman are my kind of players, both very intelligent and mature for their age. I don’t want either to go, but as you know it’s a business … and Mayer’s injury history is always lurking, just like it is with Casas.

It wouldn’t reflect poorly on the Sox because he would opt out 2 months later anyway.

          si.com/mlb/red-sox/boston-red-sox-news/red-sox-off…

Per Ken Rosenthal: “The possibility of the Boston Red Sox trading third baseman Alex Bregman is remote. So remote, you’d sooner see a certain 5-foot-4 reporter in a bow tie dunking on the 7-foot-3 Victor Wembanyama.”

New – I disagree, they didn’t do that with Campbell. But hopefully we won’t find out.

They let Rafaela stay up and struggle last year and it looks like it is paying off this year.

Campbell should have never made the team coming out of ST, and M. Mayer should have been the 2B on Opening Day. He did everything he needed to do in ST to earn that job.

New – I totally agree on that. Plus Mayer had a lot more minor league games under his belt than KC.

But we all know KC got picked because he was the only one willing to take a very team friendly deal.

Campbell made the team because he was a Right Handed Bat…. plain and simple.

Mayer is the best infield defensive prospect for the last couple decades. Pedroia was a gold glover at 2B, but could not stick at SS or 3B. Mayer is smooth whether at SS or 3B, and is quite likely going to play in some all star games along the way. There is zero chance he is traded. The Red Sox have excess outfielders, so if there is a trade expect it to come from there, and not infield or catcher.

Bregmans going to be a big boost. I never like Bregman when he was with the Astros, though I thought he was a great player. I didn’t realize he was such a team player and so good with the younger players. They need to lock him up I just hope its not at an outrages cost. The sox may have jumped the gun on Campbell, but only time will tell. I highly doubt the big three will pan out to all be super starts,…it usually doesn’t happen that way. I hope it does though!

Do you think $40MM per year is outrageous? That’s his going rate while he has spent 1/4 of the season on the IL.

        Styme – He’s getting $31M this year, not $40M.

While many of us are circle jerking a Seven game winning streak…we should keep in true perspective the quality of the teams we beat – Next Up – Tampa, Cubs & Philly should be a decent litmus test for this teams ability to consistently compete & succeed at at playoff & championship level……

Frank – So you think the Dodgers will be easy to beat? Interesting.
