The Yankees’ needs as the trade deadline looms aren’t exactly a well-kept secret. Gerrit Cole had Tommy John surgery before the season. Clarke Schmidt looks headed for the same fate. Luis Gil still hasn’t pitched due to a lat strain, and Ryan Yarbrough landed on the injured list late last month as well. DJ LeMahieu was released this morning in the wake of Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s move back to second base. Half a bullpen’s worth of relievers are on the injured list.
Given that slate of injuries and poor performance, it’s not a surprise that general manager Brian Cashman made clear when addressing the media yesterday that he plans to pursue upgrades in the rotation, in the bullpen and in the infield (link via Brendan Kuty of The Athletic). Pitching was highlighted as a particular focus.
“Whether it’s bullpen guys or starting pitchers, it’s just all of it,” said the GM. “That’s the area. We have people that are capable, but I think it also needs to get some help.”
Yankees starters rank eighth in the majors with a collective 3.69 ERA, but that includes 78 2/3 innings of 3.32 ERA ball from Schmidt, whose season is very likely over. It also includes 40 innings of 3.83 ERA ball from Yarbrough, who’s on the shelf due to an oblique strain. The Yankees have gotten terrific performances from high-profile free agent additions Max Fried and Carlos Rodon, but rookie Will Warren has a 4.70 ERA in 19 starts and fellow prospect Cam Schlittler just made his MLB debut yesterday. Veteran Marcus Stroman only recently returned from the injured list and has a 7.45 ERA in five starts (albeit with better results post-injury than pre-injury).
In the bullpen, the Yankees have lost Fernando Cruz, Mark Leiter Jr., Jake Cousins and Yerry De los Santos within the past three weeks. Cousins’ season is over before it truly began, as he’ll require Tommy John surgery. Cruz has a Grade 2 oblique strain and is looking at a long absence. Leiter has a stress fracture in his fibula. While Cousins hasn’t pitched this season due to his injuries, the other three have combined for 87 1/3 innings of 3.30 ERA ball with 21 holds and four saves.
The need at one infield position has been apparent since the offseason. Chisholm can play both third base and second base but is a better defender and more comfortable at the latter. He voiced as much recently while still being careful to make a team-first, “wherever they need me” caveat. The Yankees moved Chisholm from the hot corner back to second base and designated LeMahieu for assignment yesterday. LeMahieu, whom Boone suggested is not physically capable of handling third base right now, has seen his glovework at second base decline as well. He was released this morning.
Chisholm should be a plus all-around option at second base, but there’s no such certainty at third base. Oswald Peraza is a former top prospect and a sound defender, but he’s hitting .152/.220/.254 on the season. Jorbit Vivas, recalled when LeMahieu was designated, has slashed .156/.255/.267 in 53 major league plate appearances and .286/.409/.393 in Triple-A. Backup catcher J.C. Escarra has logged two games at third base as well but isn’t a frequent option over there. The Yankees could use some help and have already been linked to Ryan McMahon, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and others.
Any acquisitions the club makes will count against an ominous financial backdrop. The Yankees are third-time tax payors in the top penalty bracket, meaning they’re paying a 110% tax on the average annual value of any incoming players. That’s on top of said player’s actual salary.
For instance, Sandy Alcantara is perhaps the most oft-speculated name on the starting pitching market, but he’s making $17MM this year and guaranteed another $19MM beyond the season. He’d cost the Yankees $12.5MM for the final two months of this season alone, plus next year’s $17MM salary, any subsequent taxes, and at least a $2MM buyout on a 2027 option. Yankees fans frequently ask about Jacob deGrom in the chats we host at MLBTR, but deGrom has a $37.85MM AAV on his remaining contract and a $40MM salary in 2025. He’d cost the Yankees a ridiculous $27.1MM just for the final two months of the season, before even considering the $75MM he’s owed in 2026-27 (and any taxes they’d pay on that sum) and/or his full no-trade clause.
The extent to which ownership is willing to further bump payroll remains unclear. The Yankees ran up against some clear financial limitations late in the most recent offseason. Managing partner Hal Steinbrenner has publicly and famously indicated that he doesn’t think a $300MM payroll is sustainable on an annual basis. The Yankees aren’t far from that threshold right now. Cashman said yesterday that Steinbrenner has told him to present any and all scenarios, regardless of cost, and cautioned not to assume that a player or players are too expensive. Those decisions will be made by ownership on a case-by-case basis.
The Diamondbacks have what the Yankees need. One of Kelly or Gallen. One of Beeks or Miller if Miller is healthy and Suarez for 3b.
And the Yankees have what the D-Backs need…
Which is what, exactly?
Lombard and a bunch of A League prospects? I don’t see the Yankees moving their #1 prospect, so I guess the trade return is lottery tickets.
I always appreciate trade scenarios which boil down to “we get 3 major league players… and you get …. something.”
I’m happy for you that you’re upbeat about your team’s farm system, but if the Yankees had MLB ready prospects, this article wouldn’t be about how the team is targeting starters and relievers. I’m assuming, then, that you’re saying that the Diamondbacks should be super excited about sending over some proven Major League talent, in exchange for some unproven kids who have a decent chance of putting up quality numbers two or three or four years from now.
It’s a common fallacy to believe that everyone else’s favorite team is “building for the future”, and ownership wants nothing more than to exchange their best current players for promising prospects. This idea that 5 or 6 teams are free to cherry pick everyone else’s best talent is fanciful.
Want me to “do better”? Okay. The D-Backs probably don’t want Lagrange (High A), Cunningham (High A), or Hampton (AA), and they have no need for Spencer Jones, because they have plenty of outfielders, and they don’t need a Bobby Dalbec clone swinging at pitches 2 feet outside.
So what’s your package, since you’re prepared to “do better”, that provides the Diamondbacks with guys who aren’t 3 or 4 years from the bigs, and crapshots, all?
YanksPhan, why so hard of a comment when the truth is Jones’s value has declined and other clubs with similar needs have more to offer. They may be able to get one player but three, especially when Lombard seems to be off limits from what I read.
Dewey: Jones is presently pillaging AAA. He definitely has K issues but he’s a 4 tool player who can stick in Cf. I’m not saying the Yankees have this massive trove to trade from but you’re 4 weeks too late throwing dirt on Jones.
I’m a prospect hugger, that’s why I hate leaving the team poorly constructed and needing to empty the farm for impact players. I’m much happier when the shopping list is something like a backup catcher and a setup man.
Kidding , you’re appointed commish of delusionary league of mlb trade rumors !
🤣
The Yankees don’t have pitching, which is exactly what the Dbacks need.
And the Dbacks are 46-47, not great, not terrible, but somewhere in the average section. They won’t to reload for next year, not take on a bunch of lottery tickets who are 3-5 years out. They aren’t the Nats, Pirates or White Sox.
In essence, the Dbacks have everything the Yankees need/want but the Yankees don’t have anything the Dbacks need/want.
The Yankees have good prospects. Something could be worked out.
Spencer Jones probably holds appeal to Arizona.
The Dbacks current outfielders include:
Carroll, Lourdes, McCarthy, Thomas.
In the minors, they have:
Waldschmidt, Druw Jones, and Caldwell.
Why would Spencer Jones hold appeal for the Diamondbacks who have a OF logjam?
TJ Rumfield was a rule 5 player unsure how he passed through the draft, he is a good hitter.
.292/.377/.469 at Scranton, doesnt have the tremendous power that Jones has but doesn’t strike out as much.
6’5 Lefty, takes a good number of walks.
I like Jones, I think he is going to hit 40 HRs a year in the bigs, but Rumfield is a nice option too.
McCarthy and Thomas are 4th outfielders on a good team. They were young for awhile but we’ve seen large samples of these guys.
Druw Jones is nowhere close to ready. Gurriel will be a FA by the time he is. If he ever gets there. He’s not tracking like a guaranteed MLB starter.
Even if McCarthy and Thomas aren’t world beaters, they provide gold glove caliber defense. You’re not going to be 99 grade at every position but OF is absolutely not a concern in the desert.
Pitching is their concern. The farm almost has zero quality. Their best SP prospects have debuted and haven’t shown rotation quality.
The Dbacks would be stupid to sell Suarez, Gallen, Kelly or Naylor without getting quality MLB ready pitching in return.
Imo, the best SP prospects get the haul from Arizona. And I’m not bashing Jones, I’m just saying it’s not one of Arizona’s needs, especially for a team that was in the WS in 2023 and still has an elite offense. They need pitching.
The Yankees have good pitching prospects. Look them up.
I agree 100% that pitching needs to be part of the return.
The Yankees have Will Warren, who isn’t a prospect anymore but he comes with 5 years of control. There’s pieces there that could make a deal.
I have to push back on the Dbacks not needing offense though. They’re good on offense today but Naylor and Suarez are gone after this year (or deadline)
I don’t think a controllable player like Jones wouldn’t appeal.
The Diamondbacks need very specific things on offense they need corner infield help and thats not really what the Yankees have. Lombard makes some sense but they really need a 1b more than a 3b.
It’s going to have to be a package. But the Yanks have Will Warren and Cam Schlittler as MLB ready arms to add.
There’s other teams in the league that are buying so where these guys land up is anyone’s guess. But the Yankees do have players that the Dbacks could use.
Jones is a beast, Yankees shouldnt trade him. Jones and Judge will be awesome together.
TJ Rumfield could be a good option for a team like the Marlins and Cal Quantrill could be a good option for a team like the Yankees. Rumfield and Jesus Rodriguez for Quantrill and Luke Bachar could be a good trade.
Spencer Jones still has the serious K issues. He’s has huge power if that doesn’t derail him. He’s interesting and AZ would be a nice launching pad for him. But he’s certainly appealing.
If the Yankees are willing to deal Warren, Schlittler, etc., then I believe a deal can be made but I don’t think the Dbacks would be interested in farther from MLB prospects even players like Jones straight up. Just doesn’t make sense for them.
Last time I checked, Jones is an OF and doesn’t play 1B or 3B.
Not if they don’t need OF.
I wouldn’t trade either Warren or Schlittler for Zac Gallen or Merrill Kelly.
D’Backs dont have much leverage with rental pieces, they could definitely get TJ Rumfield and Jesus Rodriguez and that would be a good get for Gallen.
They might get Chase Hampton.
Kelly
Gallen
Beeks
for
Rumfield
Rodriguez
Hampton
Grosz
Carr
that would be a big return for AZ
With a 33.1% K%?
I wasn’t even necessarily penciling Jones in as a full time outfielder. He’s a bat to DH as well. With no Grichuk,Naylor, or Suarez next year they’ll have DH abs open as well as OF time.
I agree that they’ll be targeting pitching but if Hazen thinks the bat plays I don’t think he’s not appealing as a piece in a trade w/ the arms the Yanks have to move.
I don’t think anyone is coming cheap this year with very few clear sellers.
& it feels like half the MLB SP’s are on the IL. Yanks should be able to get any rental with what they have. They just don’t have the chips for a guy like Mackenzie Gore.
The problem is teams are reluctant to give up quality pitching from any level. I will be shocked if Arizona gets quality pitching at the trade deadline; too many teams recognize how difficult it is to get, so they keep it when they have it.
Cam Shlittler isn’t going anywhere as he’s needed currently in their starting rotation.
I know you didn’t just cite druw jones as part of a logjam. The only major league cornerstone is carroll. Mccarthy keeps getting sent back to aaa for a reason, and what exactly have lourdes or alek done to prove they are any better than solid at best?
I’m saying they have plenty of OF on the MLB roster and in the minors. To think they’d want another OF is short sighted unless the Dbacks trade Lourdes, McCarthy and/or Alek Thomas. I wouldn’t be opposed to them trading any or all of those like you said, they are not world beaters. BUT trading for another OF only makes sense in that scenario to me.
How about Gallen and Suarez for Cole and a huge pile of cash.
Yankees are definitely not going to do a ton in October, but are they a playoff team with all of these injuries?
There’s a lot of AL teams competing so this might be a gap year like 2023 for New York
Why would it be a gap year when they currently have a 3 game WC lead? Anything can happen in the playoffs.
The Yankees have a legit two headed monster in fried and rodon and a deeper line-up than they went into the playoffs with last season. A 3-4 starter (whether in trade and/or an effective return by luis gil), a couple bullpen adds and ideally a 3b bat who raises the floor at that position and they can definitely compete in october.
Who would have thought the whole season would crumble on a Clarke Schmidt injury, but that seems to be the case.
Clarke schmidt’s been a good, above average mid rotation starter for a while now so it’s not a surprise that an injury to him is a significant concern. The season is far from crumbled though.
It’s interesting that several outlets have mentioned that DJ’s defense has declined, yet he was posting a +7 on DRS this year at 2B with a decent sample size. Are these metrics not to be trusted?
I personally do not like DRS. If you stand too far in less plays will count against you. Trea Turner was once asked how he fixed his DRS mid season (i forget the year) and he said that he simply stood 3 feet closer and the algorithms liked him more.
Yankees need to realize that after Cole went down, this season wasn’t going to be good. What top pitching is available for free agents? Yankees have very few top prospects left. Don’t trade them out of desperation. The Gallo, and Montas trades were huge mistakes and gave up too many descent players. Smith and Duran could help the Yankees now and Spears in Montas trade could help them now as well. Unless it’s a difference maker like DeGrom or Bringing back Michael King don’t even bother with mediocre players. The Yankees have several of those types now
Smith, Duran, Sears, etc. none of them are difference-makers. Duran is hitting 143; Sears is a back end rotation guy. Smith is a decent player but no All Star. He has a 730 OPS and isn’t considered a good fielder at any position. The problem isn’t that the Yankees traded them. The problem is wasting those trade bullets for a poor return. Gallo and Montas failed miserably but not because the guys they gave up for them turned into anything special.
Yanks could use a josh smith right about now
Gallo is out of baseball at 31. Montas is a journeyman who’s now on his 6th team — the one in Queens.
Gallo’s in minors attempting a conversion to pitching
Well, Gallo certainly knows enough about strikeouts! Let’s see how it translates.
He played in 45 games total. Started 35 of them. I don’t think starting less than 25% of a full season counts as a decent sample. Poor range. Poor arm. He made the plays he could get to. But if we are going to look at DRS then he was pretty bad last year in the same amount of games at both 3B and 1B. I think him being +7 this year is just small sample noise.
I thought DRS was an adding stat, not sure we can subject that to SSS like a batting average. even if you applied standard deviation its probably still positive when it shouldnt be
SSS. You can tell by eye-test that he’s not quick enough for range at 2B anymore.
Yeah, it’s not really defensible – DJ’s legs are shot. Unfortunate because he seems like a good guy and respected teammate, but part of being an athlete is having the curtain drop at some point.and not getting to necessarily choose when that happens.
can any marlins fans explain whats happening with Sandy? why such a drastic fall off?
I’m not a Marlins fan, but from what I’ve read, his locating is off, but that’s to be expected after TJS. It’ll take him a little while to get all of that back, but the stuff is still there. He’s still striking out 5-8 batters a game, but he’s making mistakes on location.
Decline in K’s, up in BB’s, more hard contact given up, and hitters are not chasing at his pitches.
Keller for Dominguez. Key for Volpe
There’;s nothing all that special about Keller.
You’re insane if you think Mitch Keller fetches a blue chip prospect like Lombard
That’s nice, still not good enough to include Lombard. Elite prospects only get moved in deals involving established stars
That’s not true, Ronk. Last season, to acquire Jack Flaherty (2.5 fWAR, 3.12 FIP) the Dodgers parted with Thayron Liranzo (50 FV, FG’s 45th ranked prospect) and Trey Sweeney, a MLB ready 45 FV shortstop.
Lombard is a 50FV guy and ranked 39th on FG’s prospect list. So it seems like we have a comp and Lombard isn’t enough.
Keller is not the best SP available and using stats for a 20 year old in AA tells me all I need to know about you. There’s a reason he’s a consensus top 50 prospect
Contracts aside, Flaherty has a much longer track record of success than Keller and was in the middle of a strong season at the deadline last year. Liranzo is a bat first prospect who probably DHs in the big leagues and Sweeney is a janitor. Lombard is and elite defender and all around athlete with a lot of raw power. There’s no comparison
“using stats for a 20 year old in AA tells me all I need to know about you” Okay, what about last year, when he had a .693 OPS in over 350 plate appearances at A-Ball? I’m not saying that Lombard won’t ever be good, but since the start of 2024, the only good stretch of games he’s had was at the start of the year at High-A, and he realistically probably should still be at High-A.
Keller is one of only 11 pitchers since the start of 2022 with at least 630 IP (644.1), an ERA+ over 100 (106) and a sub-4,00 FIP (3.82). He also comes with 3 more years of control under $60 million in total. He’s an average or better pitcher who is reliable for 30-32 starts a season at an affordable price. If you’re trading that, I’d like to see a return for a top prospect who’s at least showing something at Double-A, even if he’s only 20.
The Pirates might find some sucker to overpay for Keller but that team will not be the Yankees
A 106 ERA+ is a decent 4th starter. It’s not going to bring back a top 100 prospect IMO.
105-110 ERA+ is like a solid 3 starter.
Yankees said last month that getting Gil back would be the equivalent of a deadline deal. He pitched a simulated game Tuesday and is set to make a rehab start for Double-A Somerset on Sunday the 13th.
I’m afraid Gil is about ready for TJ surgery. He’s delaying the inevitable. Yankees truly needs to do a better job at drafting pitchers. Yankees are not trading Volpe or Dominez. However, I would consider Volpe for Hayes on Pittsburgh, especially with Lombard coming soon
Gil hurt his lat; not his elbow. But I also don’t think they should just bank on him returning to a rotation horse in August. Any setback or ineffectiveness then their “deadline aquisition” becomes worthless. Why would the Yankees trade a no-hit, good glove SS on a rookie contract to a no-hit, good glove 3B on a decent sized contract? Hayes is also always hurt. Volpe rarely misses a game.
Why because he pulled a lat muscle?!
Nonsense.
They can have Dylan Cease for a bucket of balls.
@James – LOL, I’d take that deal.
His peripheral stats don’t look far off from his career norms. Sold and Grish will throw in a couple of torpedo bats!
Silly take. They’re not getting under the tax next season even if they sold off.
Just ask for Keller and IKF. Pittsburgh is easy to fleece
Do you always comment on things you know nothing about? Look at the history of Prates-Yankees trades. Pirates came off very good in those trades.
Are you basing your comment on Delgado’s decent start to the season? Because let’s go through some of the recent NYY/PIT trades over the last decade. The Holmes Trade? Did any of the guys traded for Taillon really turn into anything? I think PIT got about half of a good season out of Roancy. Maybe it was the fleece by PIT on the Johnny Barbato trade?
I’d love for them to flip goldy and belli, bring up jones (I’d say he’s the only untouchable) who looks seriously primed and ready. I watched him the other night and that guy is just different. I think it’s BS that he’s rated the number 2 behind Lombard…you can’t even compare the two.
More silly takes to punt the season. Jones has had a whopping 49 AAA plate appearances and yet to manage his strikeouts. He’s more of a possible Sept. call-up. The rankings don’t matter as long as both are progressing.
Playoffs are a total crapshoot every intelligent (focus on that word) fan and front office person knows this. If you don’t agree it’s because you aren’t the word you need to focus on.
All the gms in the sport must not know either, Michael Kay he’s the Yankee announcer if you didn’t know you probably don’t, he must not know anything either.
Cardinals thought Goldschmidt was finished. He’s playing a solid 1B in The Bronx and was a finalist in the All-Star fan voting.
Bellinger was a salary dump by the Cubs — he’s hitting .281 with 13 HR and, more importantly, a left-handed hitter. You always need left-handed hitting to win in Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees are not the 1997 White Sox who waved the white flag at the trade deadline while the team was in contention.
Kick the tires on someone like Joe Ryan or MacKenzie Gore.. Should be good to go. Maybe even Paul Skenes but he’s more of a #4 or 5 starter if anything…
You want the Yankees to trade for an untouchable when the Buccos have everyone else available?
@ChuckyNJ
How is a #4/5 guy untouchable? 😀
Skenes is one of two untouchables in Pittsburgh.
Skenes is over the hill anyway.
Diamondbacks are a funny team, They always have a bad 1st half and a strong 2nd half. I wouldn’t be surprised if they add pitching and go for it.. Judging by the last 9 games, the Yanks are scoring tons of runs with Peraza playing 3rd it’s the relief pitching that’s losing games for the Yanks. I would love any kind of an upgrade at 3rd but I think we need pitching
Time to sell off more farm pieces because Hal refuses to go all in on payroll. The team’s shooting for the usual goal… make the playoffs and get exposed. Time to call the pirates and try to get IKF and some arms. Lord willing we hold onto Jones, Schlitter, and Lombard. Everyone else on the farm is available.
Agree on the “untouchables” but IKF isn’t going to a difference-maker. Peraza is a better defensive third baseman.
Bleacher: You’re right about him not being a difference maker. But he’s pretty good with the glove and not a zero with the stick. Peraza seemed to have so much promise, but after his first exposure, his hitting has been terrible. I’s settle for decent D and a league averish bat just so 3rd isn’t a black hole. I’m also intrigued by Hayes, he can field for sure, and if you squint, you could see him doing a Brosious and becoming a nice bottom of the order bat.
Jersey John longs for the good old days when the NYC tabloids were wrapped up in the George Steinbrenner Personality Cult. Hal is not his father and the Yankees aren’t going to make a LOL trade.
Chucky: You seem like you’re trying to dunk on me. I already acknowledged the Yankees don’t shoot for championships any longer. They will definitely make some moves, very likely make the playoffs, and end their run with errors, bad base running, and Boone mismanaging the pen.
What’s a soon-to-be 38 year old 1B on the short side of a platoon owed 6 mil the rest of the year worth? The Yankees would be lucky to get a prospect that falls within their top 25; Belli is a very difficult trade because of the opt out. Selling while Judge is going to be MVP and Fried could lead a playoff rotation is nuts. Especially when the return will be nothing but lottery ticket prospects
Belli is right now earning his salary and his future options value. Plenty of other teams could also use Goldy at 1B on his salary even with platoon splits.
Please take a look at the last 10 trade deadlines and tell me what an aging expensive 1B like Goldy gets you. Is it worth trading him for their #25 prospect?
Every single MLBTR article and fan chat mentions that any player with an opt out is difficult to deal. If he gets hurt then he’s opting in. If he mashes then he’s opting out and is just a rental. Again, you’re not getting something great in return. At best a top 15 prospect. So another lottery ticket prospect
Well it’s a hypothetical sell-off to shed payroll as low as possible. Why would they be expecting a top prospect for rentals?
Because it’s the Yankees. Selling just to shed payroll shouldn’t be on the table. If they want to sell to infuse the team with high end talent then fine. But I highly doubt they can obtain high end talent with their pieces to sell. So no thanks to punting on the season just to save a few bucks of Hal’s money and acquire low-ceiling prospects
Nick Martinez will be a yankee , reds will be sellers
@wrich
Padres aren’t making it to the WS. Yankees need someone to throw a no-hitter against the Dodgers/Mets.
Suarez and Gallen or Kelly from the DBacks would be incredible but I’m not sure how well the teams match up. Reid Detmers is a bullpen target that intrigues me. He has a lot of potential and could be stretched out to be a SP again next year.
As far as 3b, the Yanks signed Jeimer Candelara last week to see what he could do; I’m surprised they didn’t do the same with Drury, who was scorching the ball in ST before getting hurt – just signed by the Angels. Pitching is more urgent but they seem abhorrent to go much deeper into Hank’s wallet. I’m sure Houser could be had cheap; Colorado should move German ASAP; Arizona Kelly…
Depends on how the Diamondbacks look in the next week or so. Suarez would be a big boost to the offense and be the 3B the Yankees need.
They’ve Hensley Meulensed third base
Remember,,,Judge do not hit at all in october and this is a problem
The Yanks will trade Trent Sellers and he isnt that bad of a prospect.
Cards have relievers. They also have infielders.
JP Sears would be on the all star team now if the yanks had not given him away
Everyone talks about the yanks getting IKF but the media and fans did nothing but piss on him when he played for the yanks
Because we passed on a bunch of FA’s and turns out he’s a bit stretched at SS. Playing him in the outfield while a good team first move just pissed fans off more. He doesn’t hit enough for regular reps in the outfield. Plugging a black hole at 3rd with a good glove and a hollow .270 average will seem like he’s a savior if he comes back
The same fans who booed Aaron Judge last year will piss on IKF if they get him
Adrian Houser from the W Sox has been really good this year and he’s super cheap. Houser for Everson Pereira
Rays are going to finish 3rd in the division with a .500 record and miss the playoffs. Cheap ownership never makes the deals to put them over the hump, and I’m sure Fairbanks, Brandon Lowe, Yandy Diaz, Littell, and Rasmussen are as good as gone in 3 weeks with a few no-namers who can’t hit but are fast and good at defense coming back in return. As a Rays fan, I can’t wait!!! Thanks $ternberg!!!
Some Pirates fans are wondering why Skenes has been getting pulled early recently, but this is (obviously I dare say) why. Trying to protect him from blowing out his elbow; protecting him AND protecting his trade value when he ultimately becomes available. He and other great players deserve their paydays in this modern baseball system (I know that “fair” pay is arguable in our society). The Brewers and Tigers face the same issue with Miz and Skubal, respectively. Strasberg…what happened to him? Cole was great for the Pirates until the inevitable trade and ultimately free agency: he was lucky to have gotten his contract before the elbow went. I pose a question: Will pitchers be better protected by a system where innings are reduced by pitching two “starters” per game through six or seven innings and turning to the pen? Should the active roster be expanded to accommodate that?
Would do the following
Nyy
Anthony Volpe
Mid level prospects
TBR
Ha Seong Kim
NYY
George Lombard
Ben Hess
Chase Hampton
SEA
Bryan Woo
NYY
Cam Schlittler
Everson Perera
STL
Erik Fedde
NYY
Spencer Jones
Giancarlo Stanton
Oswald Peraza
Bryce Cunningham
LAA
Mike Trout
Yusei Kikuchi
@Billy very good observation the Yankees wasted their bullets on the wrong players. They do the same in free agency. Trading for Stanton when the following year Harper was destined to be a Yankee. They signed Rizzo over Freeman. The Yankees spend the money but always on the wrong players, just like trading prospects on the wrong players.
Lol. That’s way over on fedde who hasn’t done anything of note this year. Arte Moreno isn’t going to trade trout, nor are the mariners going to trade Bryan woo. And Kim coming off a significant injury is in no way a bankable upgrade over volpe.
The Mariners laughed before hanging up.
4 either horrible and/or unrealistic ideas. Congrats
White Sox Yankees trade coming
Unless the White Sox trade one of their starters, not much to pick up on. Houses maybe?
Houser and Rojas.
3B? Nolan Gorman is “trade from depth” because the Cardinals can’t find a buyer on Arenado.
