Hunter Dobbins’ 2025 season is over, as the Red Sox placed the right-hander on the 15-day injured list due to a right ACL tear. Right-hander Richard Fitts was called up from Triple-A to take Dobbins’ spot on the active roster.
Dobbins was only just activated from the 15-day IL yesterday, as the rookie right-hander had been out of action since June 20 due to what ended up being a minor elbow strain. His return start was cut short in the second inning, when he hurt his right leg while covering first base on a Chandler Simpson grounder. MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo reported earlier today that Dobbins was believed to have “a significant knee injury…potentially with ACL damage,” and unfortunately the worst-case scenario has proven to be true.
This is the second time Dobbins has torn his right ACL, as he told the Boston Globe’s Tim Healey and other reporters that he sustained the same injury while playing high school football. Between that previous ACL tear and a Tommy John surgery during his college days at Texas Tech, Dobbins has a lot unwelcome experience in managing long-term injuries, and he’ll now face another extended absence. His recovery process will keep him sidelined for at least the start of the 2026 season, though a more definite timeline may be difficult to establish for now given Dobbins’ past knee issues.
An eighth-round pick for the Red Sox in the 2021 draft, Dobbins steadily climbed the ranks of Boston’s farm system and made his MLB debut this past April, as injuries thinned out the Red Sox rotation and opened the door for the 25-year-old. The Sox moved him up and down between Boston and Triple-A Worcester a few times in April before recalling him in early May for an extended stint in the bigs, as Dobbins had done plenty to impress the organization.
Dobbins has a 4.13 ERA and 17.6% strikeout rate over his first 61 innings and 13 games — 11 of them starts — in the majors. While he isn’t missing many bats, Dobbins is doing a good job of keeping the ball on the ground (48.4% grounder rate) and keeping opponents from free passes (6.6% walk rate). Dobbins has relied mostly on his 95.5mph fastball as his primary pitch, but his heater has helped set up batters for slider and curveball, which have significantly higher whiff rates.
Essentially the only minor silver lining for Dobbins is that he’ll continue to accumulate big league service time while on Boston’s injured list. The Sox will shift him to the 60-day IL as soon as 40-man roster space is required.
Injuries have impacted Boston’s starting depth this year, as Kutter Crawford was also recently lost for the season due to wrist surgery. Tanner Houck has missed two months due to a flexor pronator strain but is on a Triple-A rehab assignment right now and is expected back soon. Fitts has pitched pretty well over parts of two big league seasons and is the best bet to fill in for Dobbins right now. Kyle Harrison is likely the top rotation depth option at Triple-A, as the former Giants top prospect has yet to make his Red Sox debut since being acquired in the Rafael Devers trade.
The All-Star break will give the Sox some extra time to figure out their rotation picture, yet the more obvious answer might be to add a new pitcher prior to the trade deadline. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said even prior to yesterday’s game that the Sox were going to explore the market for both starting and relief pitching options in advance of the deadline, and that need has only grown greater in the wake of Dobbins’ injury. Boston’s ongoing eight-game winning streak has revived the club’s playoff chances, and put the Sox more firmly into buying territory as the deadline approaches.
Well boo. So sorry Hunter hopefully a speedy recovery.
This kid has some seriously bad mojo luck following him. He should sacrifice a chicken thigh or stuffed animal or something.
or…
Is First Base at Fenway cursed? Casas, now Dobs…Bury 1B under salt.
Better yet… Make Cora stand there! Hah
DBH – Remember when ERod sustained a serious first base injury trying to catch a bad throw from Swihart who Cora was experimenting with at first base?
There’s a long, long history of bad things happening at first base.
Ground all to Buckner…and the Mets are gonna win!!!!
Yes… that would be one of them….
I’m confused because Will Fleming made it sound like an ankle issue.
Any recent news on Kutter Crawford?
He’s done for the year
I guess Will is an idiot
bass – I wouldn’t trust anything Will Flemming says.
He’s one of the best in the building, just not a doctor.
Will Fleming was likely just taking a guess about what happened from the radio booth.
Interestingly enough, the Redsox are 3 games over .500(12-9) since trading Rafael Devers, whereas the Giants are 2 games under .500(10-12) since acquiring him.
Red Sox are .609 (14-9) since Devers left.
Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves we played the Rockies and Nationals too.
I was just correcting a mistake. That record also includes games against the Blue Jays, Rays, Reds, Giants and Mariners. Not sure why you only want to point out the bad teams. Last time I checked, every team plays last place teams.
If memory serves me right the Jays, Rays, and Angels killed us. I think SF also took 2 out of 3. That road trip wasn’t a good one.
Strange, now youre only noticing the teams that took series from the Red Sox. You skipped over the Red Sox taking series from the Rays, Red and Mariners, teams that all have winning records.
At the end of the day the Red Sox are 14-9, correction 15-9 since Devers left. Those games were played against good and bad teams. Just like every team plays.
Im not worried about the teams they supposed to beat. If you can’t win against the division leaders ya gonna be a quick October exit. So Reggie not all wins or losses are created equal.
No team is “suppose” to take 6 straight games from any 2 teams and thats ignoring the spanking they are putting on the Rays right now.
You wanna be negative go ahead, its a free country.
Did you not see the three wins in a row with the Rays? They are not just beating bad teams.
Reggie Smith
No team is “suppose” to take 6 straight games
==========================
If you are a 75% favorite, the chances of winning 6-6 in only 18%.
Yes but games you’re supposed to win…tougher second half schedule, a lot of away games…
last time I checked the R.S. record against the Rays and Yankees is 14-3, not too shabby ,Reggie .I am happy to see you are speaking up ,you rock my man!!
look at the schedule coming out of the break. if they can play 500 vs those teams it would be a huge win for them
At this point we don’t know what they are fully capable of. I would have liked to see more higher scoring wins against the Rays, but having the offense back and pitchers rested puts them in a good place to build on their success. I don’t expect them to win another 10 games in a row, but think they can be competitive even against good teams and without home field advantage.
As of 11:50pm EDT on July 12th the Red Sox are 15-9 since the Devers trade on June 15th. After the game vs the Yankees they were 37-36. They are currently 52-45.
Probably the Yankees fault. The curse of the Bambino.
Dear Hunter.
Oh, the bad karma. Oh never mind.
Dobby!
Get well soon HDob!
Damn!!! Basketball, Football but rarely seen in Baseball… tough break really loved this kids make up… Next man up!!!!
get well soon young man
i’m extremely curious to see how the red sox approach the deadline
Buy Mortimer buy!!
dasit – It’s very difficult to predict because we rely on logic and the Red Sox absolutely do not.
Some win for the Saux last night, walking it off against Fairbanks. Rafaella has been dynamite for Boston.
miller – One thing the NESN announcers said last night that is 100% true, Fairbanks has those cray-cray eyes. He’s not a guy you’d want to run into in a dark alley.
I dont know – Fear can make you sad, fear can make you angry. Fear can make you anxious. Fear can make you vengeful. It’s normal to process fear in those ways.
I wear a flashlight on the bill of my hat in the case that I find myself in a dark alley. It looks sort of dorky but it comes in handy on occassion.
miller – If anybody makes fun of your hat, just tell them you’re a miner.
Perhaps the Yankees will offer him a contract.
Perhaps you’ll discover Liquid Intelligence!!
It’s just so easy.
Cora wins manager of the millennium for having this beat up team in the playoffs. Guys go down and he fills in the cracks with whatever he’s got handy. One of the best managers in baseball.
Nice try Alex – give the kid back his IPad!
Whyhazee…. what are you smoking?
Are people still thinking this team will come up short like they were at the beginning of the season?Patience wins out. This guy sucks, the team sucks, now i am figuring that Fenway is full capacity to see this team. There goes the protests of how management is running the team.
Red Sox fans aren’t happy unless they’re unhappy. It’s been that way since I started following them in 1964. After 2004, they got a bit giddy and arrogant. Spoiled by success instead of being used to failure, they’re back to being miserable about everything.
hayzee – I’ve always known you’re just mocking the aforementioned portion of Sox fans who become arrogant whenever the team experiences some success.
Yep, they are on their way to 111 wins and Rafaela will be World Series MVP and there will be a Cora statue erected outside Fenway where the trashcans are picked up by WM ;O)
Fair weather fans…front runners…
And how do those Cedanne ,Bello and Crochet signings look today ,skeptics?!? Romy and Toro are good role players, place holders and Hicks and Alcala as well to a limited degree. Overall,I think Breslow has done a good job with this roster and the fine tuning could be a little risky. I read where they were looking at the Nats Bell as a long term power hitting first baseman. The Sox finally have some momentum, lets enjoy this fun to watch group and LETS GOOOOO SOX!!!!
Coop – It’s Hayzee’s shtick, he’s entertaining us, just go with it ;O)
Perfect example yesterday, Crochet throws a 100 pitch shutout, an dthe game takes 2 hours and 8 minutes, That time won the New York City marathon one of the years I ran it. Would you rather the game take the 3 hours and twenty one minutes it took me to finish? No thank you.
Meanwhile, the Cubs take out Boyd after 8 innings and 85 pitches. It takes TWO pitchers to finish off the game and it take 2 hours and 32 minutes. Completely unneccessary.
Yes, Cora does overuse some guys but nowhere near what Dr. Boonedoggle does, who is an absolute master of burning out his pitchers. So I’ll take Cora.
Hayzee – Another moron manager is Cash. All his decisions are pre-planned based on analytics. Not a surprise he can never win the big games. What he did with Bradley/Baker Thursday was 2020 World Series with Snell all over again.
Good observation, they should give him a lifetime contract.
Would love to hear from Sox fans with info & opinions of Tanner Houck. What’s been wrong in ’25 and near-/long-term predictions/feelings…
There’s a story in the Athletic that covers him and the other Saux SPs.
Also, Quinn Priester is having a better season than Kyle Harrison. Breslow is an absolute genius.
Boston’s Alignment
Also, Quinn Priester is having a better season than Kyle Harrison.
===========================
What does Priester have to do with Harrison?
Players traded this year maybe. If so, Crochet is having a better year than Priester.
Bring up Harrison. Interesting watch for a Giants follower. I want to see.
Harrison has been lit up at Worcester to the tune of 11 ER including 5 HR’s allowed in 13 innings. He should not be called up right now
Oof. I didn’t know that. That’s no good for anyone. Sounds like I’m waiting a bit longer.
Harrison was never expected to give immediate dividends. The real reward in that trade was getting rid of malcontent Devers and that bloated contract.
It takes time to reshape a Harrison, he is a good candidate to return to form, you can`t teach a 97mph fastball and btw the results with Fitts and Dobbins and others has been very good ,don`t you think?
Absolutely bergy.
Fitts and Dobbins became noticeably better once here. Add to that list Cooper Criswell and even Quinn Priester. Priester was brought in for Nick Yorke and less than a year later was traded for 2 minor leaguers and the 33rd pick in todays draft. Quite an improved haul for such a short turn around.
The pitching staff, up and down the organization, knows how to take potential and turn it into production.
I don’t really think the Sox care about Harrisons results right now…They are “retooling” hin, so to speak…
Absolutely, he’s a good reclamation project with a high ceiling.Potential to be a #3 or #4 in the rotation.
Harrison is working on a slider. You can’t get a new pitch ready for the majors in just a few weeks. His previous “slider” was more of a slurve, usually categorized as a curveball these days.
Devers may be going on IL with back injury. Our DH have hit better than he has since the trade and we are playing better without him. Breslow’s best move so far.
The ol’ addition-by-subtraction misdirection event worked, eh? Give it time to marinate before we start jumping to conclusions, of course…
It worked only in the sense that a needless distraction was removed and the rest of the team can go on with their lives. Beyond that it’s still a wait and see. It does bear to admit that without Devers at DH the Sox can have Anthony, Abreu, and Yoshida in the lineup at the same time
Devers is
1) Overpaid
2) Not producing
3) Not helping his team win
4) Injured
5) His ego is causing more problems in SF
How long do we have to wait before we are allowed to jump to conclusions?
Ah dunno Reg, 4 years maybe? Could be sooner, could be later… from the periphery it would seem that the Sox are winning the trade, and that’s with zero current contributions from Hicks and Harrison. Not bad.
Buster Posey didn’t do his due dillegence. If the Dever’s trade is a bust because Devers packs it in its Posey’s mistake.
If Devers is pulling up lame in response to management’s insistance that he make an effort at first base – if he has taken the stance that I am not going to play first base because of how this entire situation has developed from the beginning – because he now views it as compromising himself in some way – I support his stand. Its been a power play since the beginning with Breslow and Henry and its about money and control.
It will be difficult for Devers because he is the one who gets the bad wrap for not compromising but if he feels it is bigger than just moving over to first base and feels like he shouldnt compromise himself because it is opening the door to something he doesn’t accept than good for him, don’t compromise yourself and stand your ground.
If nobody can see it your way, and it seems like the entire world is against you, don’t compromise yourself to gain their acceptance or their friendship because friendship like that isn’t worth it. I support Devers.
bwmiller:
“Its been a power play since the beginning with Breslow and Henry and its about money and control.”
The Red Sox are/were trying to become a pitching-centric team and good defense is a must to help the pitchers they have and attract new pitchers. Logically, they wanted to improve the defense from 2024 . The three glaring problems were C (-14 DRS), SS (-7) and 3B (-8). Wong was replaced at catcher, Story was returning from injury and that left Devers needing to be replaced at third. Devers with a $300M contract already in pocket, handled it like a petulant child.
Where’s the “Power Play”? What does that even mean?
Reggie, Devers was not only the worst defensive 3B in MLB, he was injured at the end of 2024 and came into camp with both shoulders injured to the point he could neither play defense at any position nor swing a bat. The Red Sox had no choice but to play someone else at 3B to start 2025.
When it became clear that they could sign Bregman, negotiations that came together over a 4 day period according to Breslow and after Devers showed up at spring training physically unable to play the position, the path forward was crystal clear.
Then Devers handled the situation like a petulant child even though he knew he was physically unable to perform at 3B in time to be the Red Sox 3B the first month or more or the season. That sealed his fate in my eyes and it was only a matter of time before he was traded. If Yoshi had been healthy, Devers may have been traded before the season started.
Red Sox were looking at better defensive third basemen well before Devers showed up to spring training. Here’s two stories that contradicts your timeline.
mlbtraderumors.com/2025/02/cardinals-red-sox-have-…
mlbtraderumors.com/2025/01/red-sox-interested-in-a…
However Arenado and Bregman’s prices (trade and FA) were too high. After he reported to ST injured, the Red Sox went the extra mile on Bregman and signed him. Had Bregman been cheaper in FA, or the Cards asked for less for Arenado, Devers wouldve been replaced well before ST.
———-
Everything else you said I agree with.
1st article says the Cardinals called the Red Sox offering Arenado.
According to Breslow as reported in MassLive, while the Red Sox did due diligence on Bregman the talks didn’t start to heat up until February 12th, the day Devers arrived at camp and took his team physical and also the day the Red Sox found out Devers would be unable physically to play 3B to start the season.
If Devers had arrived in shape to play, Bregman is playing elsewhere today.
It’s only working because Roman Anthony is now playing up to his pedigree and Rafaela seems to have made the jump to all-star quality outfielder the last 6 weeks. They filled in the offensive gap and now that Bregman is back this team is going to score. The question is will we stop others from scoring?
King that was the whole idea…
Does this mean Isaiah Campbell stays? Sorry, Sox fans.
Sox depth is getting a little thin with Dobbins, Crawford, and Winckowski all out for the season. Harrison has been hit hard so far though Tyler Uberstine and Shane Drohan have been decent and one of them may be next in line
Rsox – This Dobbins injury has changed my mind on trade deadline needs.
If the Sox truly want to try and win this year, they need to acquire a solid starting pitcher. Now is not the time to experiment with guys like Ubie and Dro.
I wouldn’t do his Tommy John surgery if I was the last orthopedic surgeon on Earth.
Good call Doug. Stick to selling car insurance. You only pay for what you need!
Need to add a starter before the deadline if they can find anyone more than a rental that will fit in the bottom of the rotation. A solid 2 or 3 starter could be the difference maker. Sucks for Dobbins, he was showing great potential. Hoping he comes back strong next year!
Terrible news for Dobbins and the Red Sox. Crawford , now Dobbins , Houck I believe was more for being ineffective than injured. Hopefully Houcks “injury” heals up sufficiently, because we are going to need him at some point.
cdc – I replied to all your posts from yesterday, sorry I usually am out and about on Saturdays.
As for Dobbins and Crawford, sure they are losses but let’s be grateful our three best starting pitchers have been 100% healthy …. not too many teams can say that.
FPG
Yes,I read them . Thank you. I have written a couple of posts on here . I don’t think you’re going to agree , but look them over and see what you think. Lol. Cora and the front office doing a good job.
Could it be time to give Cora and Breslow some credit.? The team is playing well despite a rash of severe injuries to key players. Sticking with Story, when many on this site were calling for him to be DFA-ed. What is he hitting since he had those couple days off ? The off season pickups of Bregman, Crochet, Chapman (did not see this coming), as well as Narvaez, all performing exceptionally well. The removal of a malcontent as well as his massive salary to allow for greater roster flexibility. Granted you may have caused the situation by signing Bregman, but he is worth it . I’ll take Bregman over Devers. Lets give some credit where credit is due.
There is something you can take to treat that rash
The Red Sox are on a tear!
