Yorvit Torrealba Has Padres Offer

By Tim Dierkes | February 1, 2010 at 4:30pm CDT

Catcher Yorvit Torrealba "has a one-year offer from the Padres in hand," tweets ESPN's Buster Olney.  Olney adds that Torrealba "would like to engage the Mets, but to this point the Mets have indicated they don't have any money available to make something happen."  Previous reports had indicated the Mets were turning to Torrealba after missing out on Bengie Molina, despite Torrealba's grievance against them.  With question marks at catcher and in the rotation, Mets fans have to hope the team isn't out of money.

That said, the free agent catching market is bleak: Torrealba, Rod Barajas, and Jose Molina are the most notable names.

Mets out of money? I thought they didn’t have a set budget? This could get interesting.

Yeah I thought I heard they had like 15-20 million left to spend.

They’re $20 million under last year’s payroll… and yet they can’t spend any more.

    What the fluck.

This would be great for the Padres. But does Torrealba want to be in San Diego?

Looks like Omir Santos will be the Mets C. But I like this signing for the Pads. Loved watching him here in Colo with the Rockies. Clutch player and good leader.

Torrealba would be a great primary back up for SD and could continue the tutelage of the two young catchers in SD Dusty Ryan NOT Allen and Nick Hundley. Yorvit also is familiar with the NL West which should only play into the Padres favor with the young pitching staff and young core players, all around nice fit.

Hopefully the Mets are saving money so they can replace their entire front office and medical staff.

I hope they are saving to spend on V-Mart next off-season and Javier Vazquez.

me too span, cause they’d lose out on those negotiations too.

If Mauer gets locked up as reports are indicating, expect the Red Sox to hang onto V-Mart. But he can’t catch anyway.

i’m a red sox fan, i gotta ask though, seriously, how does a Mauer extension with the Twins mean the Sox are going to hold onto Martinez? Just curious

There were reports during the past year that the Red Sox were salivating at the prospect of Joe Mauer hitting free agency. They probably would have had to let V-Mart walk if they wanted to sign Mauer. So if Mauer does stay with the Twins, the Sox will keep V-Mart.

“Torrealba would like to engage the Mets …”

Kinda like “Fred Wilpon would like to engage Bernie Madoff”?

I wish I was little bit taller,
      I wish I was a baller
I wish I had a girl who looked good
      I would call her
      I wish I had a rabbit in a hat with a bat
      and a ’64 Impala

Sort of like “would like to engage”…I think Skee-lo said it better

I’m sure other players “would like” for certain things to happen too…but aside from the big names, the market is giving these FA a pretty stern dose of reality.

Give Torrealba 200-300 ABs and he can be plenty productive. And he’s got a significant amount of postseason experience. Would be a great fit in the Padres minds.

I’m not sure I want a player who WANTS to play for the Mets.

Bay only went there because he overplayed his hand.

Any chance the Coupons shut down the spending for the rest of this offseason in hopes of getting a Pujols/Fielders type in free agency? Saving up everything they can in order to beef up any contracts offered next year or the year after?

Sorry… just day dreaming at work. Lunch break soon.
