Odds & Ends: Calero, Beckett, Robles, Bay

By Tim Dierkes | March 1, 2010 at 1:45pm CDT

Links to kick off the new month…

  • The Mets "would have interest in Kiko Calero on a minor league deal," tweeted Ken Davidoff of Newsday yesterday.  Calero is holding out for a big league contract, which seems reasonable.
  • Scott Boras client Jacoby Ellsbury hasn't had any long-term contract discussions with the Red Sox, nor does he intend to, reports Joe Haggerty of CSNNE.com.
  • The latest GM's Corner video from Jim Bowden of FOX Sports is fifteen minutes well-spent, with appearances by Billy Beane, Jack Zduriencik, Mike Rizzo, Logan White, and Lance Berkman.  The video is all about scouting.
  • Check out Rob Bradford's in-depth discussion with Josh Beckett for WEEI.
  • Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times says the Mariners might have a nice find in hard-throwing lefty Mauricio Robles, who came from Detroit in last summer's Jarrod Washburn trade.
  • Baker's colleague Larry Stone talked to Jason Bay, who said the Mariners expressed interest but never made a serious push for him.
  • Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle notes that Brett Tomko and Jason Jennings will each earn $700K if they make the A's.

The less the Cardinals talk about Calero, the more convinced I am that we’ll sign him.

Roster is practically filled… Unless rich hill gets cut in the next few days and a
      25-man spot opens up.

For the Mets, a team that didn’t significantly improve itself nor go on a spending spree this offseason, suddenly everything is about looking for discounts and minor league deals – and they started this earlier in the offseason than most teams hoping for bargains. I gotta wonder if ownership really is in deeper financial “doody” than they’ve been letting on all this time…

mets improved on several areas….just because they didnt get a starter doesnt mean they didn’t improve. and outside of lackey and possibly sheets(which is understandable why they didnt go after him) there wasn’t any starter out there worth bringing in.

My thoughts went beyond starters, but we could debate endlessly about whether they improved meaningfully. My main point here is about the whole “discount” thing. It doesn’t look like a good sign to me.

I think if your an athlete represented by Scott Boras, you learned that you shouldnt take his advice, case and point, he is going to screw Ellsbury big time if Jacoby doesnt go long term early

Boras is good with getting players going their prime huge contracts.

I don’t understand why people bash Boras so much. You realize that he’s simply trying to get the player the most money, right? The other alternative is to have the team (owner) get the money. Doesn’t it make more sense to have the player, the person actually producing on the field, try to get the most money he can?

Boras is a master of presentation and conviction; key skills in his line of work. Not to mention he uses the media outlets to his advantage like no other agent does. We “think” a player may want 5 years and x amount of money, because that is the calculated and choreographed press release Boras has sent out. So when the player signs for 3 years, while the public may see it as a “failure,” perhaps that was the goal all along.

While there may be a recent backlash from teams, Boras will still more than likely get his client overpaid because he does his homework and presents his case in a way which has the GMs are eating out of his hand. Especially the big ticket guys.

You can call him greedy, but if he’s just trying to get his player a bigger piece of the pie from the team, I’m okay with that.
