Frank Catalanotto Will Likely Retire

By Zachary Links | May 13, 2010 at 8:22pm CDT

After being designated for assignment by the Mets earlier in the week, Frank Catalanotto says that "chances are" he will retire, according to Michael Obernauer, Matt Gagne, and Andy Martino of the Daily News.

The Long Island-native made the major league squad after signing a minor league deal with the Mets in January.  Catalanotto was brought aboard to be the team's left-handed bat off of the bench, but hit just .160/.192/.200 in 26 plate appearances.  On Monday, MLB.com's Adam McCalvy suggested that the 36-year-old could be a fit for the Brewers who are seeking minor league depth.

In 14 big league seasons, Catalanotto has a career .291/.357/.445 slash line.

He used to rake against the Sox when he was on the Jays. Someone will probably pick him up.

Catalanotto has been done for like four years, but just lingering around. But he’s the type of guy that comes to mind when you think of a “professional hitter”

If the Cat does retire, he will have earned $21,437,500 for his career according to baseball reference.

I will always remember the cat as being very clutch during his tenure with the Jays

Frank Catalanotto probably doesn’t read this site, but if he does and you see this Frank, in my opinion you shouldn’t hang them up just yet.

26 at-bats is really nothing, and to the guy who said he’s been done for like 4 years — Catalanotto hasn’t really gotten that many plate appearances in recent seasons and outside of his power, he’s been league average at around .270/.340. He was never a big power guy anyway (maybe he would have been if all the pitchers he was facing weren’t juice-heads).

As a Yankee fan who watched this guy for several years with the Jays, this guy was class and a good hitter who could square the ball up real good.

I liked his little stint with the Brewers last year. Loved the walk up song also! I just enjoyed rooting for the guy.

I nominate Cat to be the next Mets hitting instructor…at least the mets can use his book on all the pitchers in the league

He’s a beast utility guy in MVP Baseball 2005. Best of luck to Frank if he actually retires.

The Cat was one of my favorite Jays. Being the sentimental fool that I am, I’d like to see the Jays sign him to a 1-day so he can retire a Jay.

I would love to see Cat on the Cincinnati bench…..We need a really solid pinch-hitter. Miguel Cairo and Laynce Nix just arent it.
