Elias Rankings Update

By Tim Dierkes | June 21, 2010 at 11:12pm CDT

After the season the Elias Sports Bureau will take all players over the 2009-10 period, divide them into five groups for each league, and rank them based on various statistics.  Then each player will be labeled a Type A, B, or none.  Those designations and the possible accompanying arbitration offers determine draft pick compensation (click here for a refresher).

Eddie Bajek has reverse-engineered the Elias rankings, and he's providing that information exclusively at MLB Trade Rumors.  Here's a look at how the players rank for the period beginning with the 2009 season running through June 20th, 2010.  The Google spreadsheet has separate tabs for each position group.  The players have about three more months to change these rankings.  Since last time, Adrian Beltre and Carl Pavano moved from B to A.

Only Padres ranked are no surprise.
    A – Adrian Gonzalez
    B – David Eckstein

Bell and Gregerson are both Type A’s while Garland and Corriea are both currently ranked as Type B’s.

Same place as Eric Bruntlett’s beard.

At what point will they recalculate the ratings based on statistics that actually matter?

Will Jorge Cantu be classified as a 1B or a 3B? He’s most likely going to be a 3B all of this year, was a 3B for a fourth of last year, and was a 3B in 2008. I think you guys have him in the wrong section.

Cantu’s position will be based on position with most games played between 2009 and 2010. Because I need to spit out projections for 800 players in the matter of minutes and can’t take every single subjective position change into account, the projections use the cumulative games played numbers to date. Once he’s played more games at 3B than 1B, he’ll shift over in the rankings.

Do my eyes deceive me? Is that Sweaty Freddie I see as a type A?

I am not sure who you are referring to as Sweaty Freddie, but I have always though that name went with Freddie Garcia. And he is near the bottom of the AL SP with neither A nor B ranking.

Don’t think the Cubbies have much to worry about. Offer him arbitration at 12m already made in 2010 and they stuck with him again for 2011 and add him to the list of dead weight contracts piling up already on that team.

Isn’t Kuroda a free agent after this year?

Not a six year free agent, so no compensation I believe. I think he has to be non-tendered to become a free agent.

Any reason why I can’t see any list? I get the post but nothing appears in the box. I see the arrows up/down and across and the google doc /report abuse and updates every five minutes at the bottom but that’s it. Running under explorerer 8

I swear, damn near every Twin position player is on that list…

Type A: Mauer, Morneau, Hudson, Kubel, Cuddyer, Span…

    Not A: Hardy, Punto, Young

A few pitchers too. Pavano, Blackburn, Guerrier…and Nathan?

Not all of em are FAs next year, but still…

What is funny about these lists? the kid Daniel Nava, he who has *30* MLB AB’s is rated above around 25 or so players in the AL 1B/OF/DH category and it includes a few guys who had decent seasons last year and year before, or at least fair, like Mark Kotsay, Hank Blalock, Marcus Thames. not top FA’s by any means, but still…
