Rosenthal On Cubs, Pedro, Padres

By Zachary Links | June 12, 2010 at 4:28pm CDT

Let's check out the latest edition of Full Count from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports..

  • It's hard to imagine the Cubs as sellers, but if they go that route, lefty Ted Lilly would be a logical piece to move.  He's a potential free agent with some no-trade protection but they already have two replacements in their bullpen in Tom Gorzelanny and Andrew Cashner.  Meanwhile, Derrek Lee has been adamant about not waiving his no-trade clause.  However, hooking on with a contender would enhance his value on the open market.
  • The Phillies have kept in touch with Pedro Martinez's agent but GM Ruben Amaro says that he will have to be "really motivated" to pitch this season.  Rosenthal says that translates to the righty wanting more money than he was paid last season, roughly $1MM for six weeks of work.  Money may not be everything for Martinez though as he will be 39-years-old in October and is said to be content.
  • The Padres are confident that Ryan Webb could fill a set-up role if they move one of their strong late inning relievers.  However, the team is reluctant to make such a move with Mike Adams' durability in question.  That said, the Padres would listen to offers for Heath Bell if a club was willing to give them a hitter they could control for several years.  Rosenthal instead suggests that they  consider Cleveland's Austin Kearns as he is a cheap, affordable outfielder.
  • Boston GM Theo Epstein hates trading for relievers, but chances are the club will be in the market for bullpen help come July.

Move Lilly for what, exactly? Lilly isn’t going to bring back much, and we’ll have to pay his salary anyways. I’d rather keep him and collect a draft pick in the offseason. Or bring him back next year- Ted’s a bulldog.

Dont the Cubs have like 5 OFers? They should trade one of them regardless of buying or selling.

Move Lilly for an established minor prospect that would be ready to play at the MLB level sooner than any kid they they would draft with a compensatory draft pick, duh.

Why is it so difficult to see the Cubs as sellers? They are in 3d place and fading fast, having lost 2 at home to the Chisox.

I would trade Adams in a package for either of Corey Hart, Kearns, or Carlos Quentin (assuming he’s one of the players Williams has on the market).

Adams is a stud! Out of the players you names Hart would be the ONLY ONE that would even be remotely possible. I would love Corey Hart, but again not sure the Brewers part with him however, they are desperate for pitching and the Padres have SOME depth. They also just drafted a boat load pitchers with high upside and a mix of college and HS guys so who knows. Kerns could be had for a 2nd tear prospect. nobody is going to overpay for Austin Kerns. Quentin is not doing much in one of the most hitter friendly parks in BB, Im not sure Petco Park helps him translate better numbers or re-serge his career. You definitely wouldn’t give up Adams dealing from THE PADRES STRENGTH (pitching) for a struggling player ala Andruw Jones/Quentin etc. The Padre IF they are going to deal for ANY bat need a guy who is producing now, a player they can BANK on, not a guy they will HOPE will turn it up with “different scenery”.

I’m unclear how one can posit that the Red Sox will need bullpen help in July. July is still pretty far away, and near as I can tell they have 3 guys performing well and a couple guys performing badly. So… pretty much the same as almost any bullpen in the league. If Okajima and Ramirez start pitching decently again (ex. mid-3 ERAs), I don’t see any reason they’d have to pick up bullpen help. It just seems a strange thing to say that the Red Sox will be looking for an extra bullpen arm at that point, considering you could probably say the same thing about any contending team.

Who would give up someone equal to even a supplementary pick for Lilly? He’s a rental, and we’ll end up with a 26 year old 4A arm. I’d rather have Lilly than that, anyday. As for the 5 outfielders, it’s a pretty crappy situation. Fukudome and Soriano are being paid too much to be moved- Byrd is playing great for the Cubs, by far our best position player this year. Nady is the only one I see being moved. Def. not Colvin. But, if anyone wants Sori or Kosuke- please make Hendry an offer. PLEASE!!??

I’ve been saying for a couple of weeks that Kearns would be a good target for the Padres, his defense is good (right?) and his bat is on this year, and he’s affordable and won’t cost a lot in terms of prospects.
