White Sox Designate Jayson Nix For Assignment

By Luke Adams 2 | June 17, 2010 at 9:13pm CDT

Jayson Nix has been designated for assignment by the White Sox, according to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times (via Twitter). The move clears a spot on the roster for the 21-year-old Dayan Viciedo, who Baseball America ranked as the 61st-best prospect in baseball before 2009.

Nix displayed some power for the Sox in 2009, homering 12 times in 290 plate appearances. His performance this year has been disappointing though, as he hit just .163/.268/.245 in 57 big league plate appearances. In a second tweet, Cowley adds that Nix would like another shot at the majors, but if he clears waivers, his first choice would be to remain a White Sox.

thats a real shame he showed some good promise last season and was actually not that horrible this season, I like the move to call up Dyan I think this shows that Teahan is truly going to have to fight for his job back(he does not deserve it AT ALLL) But I truly think that they should have kept nix and DFA’d teahan, nix can at least play 2nd, SS, 3rd, and the corner OF positions..and play them just as well defensively if not better than teahan…

My real question is why Dyan and not brent morell who is killin it in AAA right now?

Morel’s not on the 40-man roster. Viciedo is. That’s pretty much the main reason why.

uh have you seen his numbers this year? Those aren’t horrible?

Brent Morel has been struggling since he got promoted to AAA, and Dayan is making $1.25M this year, so that’s probably why.

Nix was a poor defender and a poor bat this year. I agree that he showed promise last year and it’s a shame that he can’t outplay the 43 year old Vizquel this year.

YESSSSS, it’s about damn time. Dayan has shown he can step in and produce beyond anyone that can play 3rd for us, ESPECIALLY NIX.

    Doesn’t he play 1b?

Started off playing 3rd and played third his entire career in Cuba, but they moved him to first when they promoted Morel to AAA. Had 30 errors, 30(!) at 3rd last year but “only” has 8 this year so far. Hopefully he’s improved.

Thats not true, he was moved there cause the Sox seen his fielding and knew that he had problems. Morel was promoted during the year and Dayan was playing firstbase during springtraining and from the start of the year.

This move makes little to no sense! While Nix was not playing well, he was hardley playing at all, we are wasting Dayan’s growth as a hitter. He will sit on the bench and maybe get a game every 7-10 days. Does this make sense at all? Why bring a kid up when you already have too many players taking up the DH/1B spots?

It seems like a lot more prospects have been promoted to the majors this year than other years. I like it.

Wow, the Sox have no plan at all. Yes Dayan has improved recently but he doesn’t seem close to being major league ready. He doesn’t know how to take a walk and I’m scared of what his defense might be like.

I believe they are just trying to do what they can to see if they can get back into it. He hits left handers well so will likely be in against them. We’ll see what happens.

Who plays third? Omar? I would love to have Dayans bat in there each day. Dayan needs to learn how to get some walks.

Its to play third, though supposedly he’s not in the lineup friday.

this might mean the end of teahan, if he can have at the very least mediocre defense and an awesome bat he will do fine, much like aramis ramirez(sp?) for the cubs, untill recently he was a horrible fielding 3rdbasemen if your bat can make up for your defense you will be fine so hopefully thats what it means for dyan, OR…OR…OR it means Konerko is getting traded and they want to get Dyan as much time in the bigs as possible, no real need to worry about super 2 status due to it being late in the year and 2 years left on his deal after this season

Viciedo will be great at third, his body mass can block the entire left side of the infield.

This is a confusing move from a baseball standpoint. It appears to be all about economics. Time for this kid to earn his paycheck on the big league level. I actually think part of the recent resurgence has had a lot to do with having Vizquel in the lineup everyday. He solidifies 3b defensively, and allows Ozzie to do a lot of the things he likes to do offensively at the top of the order.

    I hope I’m wrong.

The recent resurgence has a lot more to do with who we have been playing imho. I am sure Vizquel has helped but the Cubs and Pirates are really bad.

and what about the series win over the Tigers? Yes the Pirates are really bad, but you can’t do any better than a sweep.

Sure the series win over the Tigers was nice and i am not trying to nay say the Sox or the recent change at third that put Vizquel there, I mean I love them. Even in the Tigers series we missed Verlander and beat up on Porcello which lets face it everyone has and Scherzer who had just returned from AAA and I think his 14 K outing or whatever it was more a fluke and not the norm.

I really really like the Sox but I want to see them beating good pitching and good teams before I feel confident it is in fact a resurgence due to personnel changes on the field and in the lineup.

I agree, but it all comes down to executing and beating who you’re suppose to beat, and sox have trouble doing that sometimes. Seeing them actually beat Pitts, the Cubs and (hopefully) 2 of 3 from the Nasty Nats could be really refreshing.

They didn’t beat Strasburg, Storen blew the game. Strasburg pitched a better game than Floyd, but they were both lacking…well, any offense whatsoever. Floyd pitched a good game, but Strasburg pitched a better one.

I wouldn’t assume he is going to play 3B. It makes more sense to be primarily a DH and fill in at 1B and 3B as a backup.

again i truly wonder if this means konerko is gone by the dead line, or yes he will be the primary DH and either jones or kotsay are DFA’d or traded

I don’t see Kotsay going anywhere. Ozzie loves him, and they can’t get rid of a lefty bat off the bench. The theory on Konerko, unfortunately, seems to make more sense.

Or it could simply mean they are calling somebody up do to an injury. But that makes too much sense right?
