Astros Claim Anderson Hernandez, Nelson Figueroa

By Tim Dierkes | July 21, 2010 at 12:14pm CDT

The Astros claimed infielder Anderson Hernandez off waivers from the Indians and pitcher Nelson Figueroa off waivers from the Phillies, tweets Alyson Footer.  She adds that pitchers Polin Trinidad and Gary Majewski were designated for assignment.

Hernandez was designated for assignment by the Indians three days ago, the second time they'd done so this year.  He's struggled mightily with the bat in the Majors and minors.  Figueroa cleared waivers and accepted a Triple A assignment in June, so I'm not sure what happened there.  The 36-year-old was excellent in the minors and decent in the bigs.

Trinidad, a 25-year-old southpaw, has a 4.55 ERA, 5.5 K/9, 2.5 BB/9, and 12 home runs allowed in 97 Triple A innings this year.  Heading into the season Baseball America ranked him 26th among Astros prospects, saying he "profiles as a No. 5 starter or long reliever."  Majewski, 30, spent most of the season at Triple A where he posted a 4.04 ERA, 5.3 K/9, and 2.8 BB/9 in 35.6 relief innings.

Ed must still be trying to get value from the Schilling trade.

Travis Lee and Omar Daal are unemployed, he should give them a call and have a reunion.

These moves could indicate that the Astros are indeed moving Keppinger and a pitcher. This is exciting…

Likely claimed Figgy as part of a deal with Philly. If something wasn’t going down, I would think Philly would have reclaimed him, and called him instead of Carpenter yesterday…

Figueroa is better than Carpenter and Baez. This was a mistake.

Maybe Figs takes up Oswalts spot in the rotation.

I can’t believe people think a minor league retread like Figueroa is going to be part of a trade for Oswalt.

We are talking about Ed Wade and Drayton McLane, anything is possible with them.

I wonder if Philly ‘made’ him available for Houston to grab to start a deal that send Oswalt to Philly. Doesn’t seem too crazy right?

Obviously Happ would have to be included in a deal for Oswalt, but who else would the Astros accept? They have the upper hand in these trade talks, as the Phillies are in obvious need of starting pitching. However, Ed Wade is the GM……

Houston is limited too. Oswalt has a big price tag, and a short list of teams he’ll go to that can 1) give a good return and 2) are willing to pick up his option for 2012.

Don’t assume Happ will be part of this deal, especially if a third team is involved.

I wouldn’t say it’s obvious…I see Werth going before Happ.

Well yeah, but seems like they are trying to make 2 seperate deals – with the Werth deal netting prospects to replenish the system. I thought the Stro’s were asking for a major league ready pitching prospect…

Could at least add an arm to the Astros rotation in the event they do move Oswalt.

Im pretty positive Happ is being moved to Houston in the deal. Astros top scouts were at his last start yesterday.

    From what People are saying
Rays Get: Jayson Werth Brett Myers and Astros prospects Koby Clemens and Chia Jen-Lo
Phillies Get: Roy Oswalt Jeff Keppinger Rays prospect Kyle Lobstein
Astros Get: Jarred Coasrt,Jonathan Singleton,Jeremy Hellickson,Wade Davis, Austin Hyatt and Matt Moore

That is a hole lot for the Astros to get Via Trade
    I seen this on Astros.com

Baez is horrible. Amaro is not big on cutting ties with people. he is a body they can go to for now. not a very good pitcher but they need arms. i would rather have scott Mathieson brought up and cut baez.

and i liked figgy too. i would offer Herdon back to his old team too. he is not doing to well either.

Hahahahaha. The fact that Houston thinks either of these two will provide any more value than Trinidad or Majewski could is entirely amusing.
