Olney On Hart, Bautista, Soria

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 22, 2010 at 8:46am CDT

The White Sox would love to trade for a big bat, but rival executives don’t see much depth in their system, according to ESPN.com’s Buster Olney. That may make it tough for GM Kenny Williams to create an enticing offer for Prince Fielder without including Gordon Beckham (that kind of offer just doesn’t seem likely). Here are the rest of Olney’s rumors:

  • Lots of teams are interested in Corey Hart.
  • Yesterday Olney reported that some executives thought Jose Bautista could earn an eight-figure salary through arbitration next year. We crunched the numbers and concluded that it would be a surprise to see him make much more than $6MM. Other officials contacted Olney to say that they would be “stunned” if the slugger made more than $5-6MM in 2011.
  • Rival executives say Joakim Soria’s contract is so team-friendly that it would be difficult for the Royals to trade him. The team has affordable options for 2012, 2013 and 2014.

I don’t know. If we’ve learned anything about Kenny, it’s that he likes to make a splash on the trade market.

I bet they’d part with Beckham if it got Prince.

I don’t trust Quentin’s health. He plays too aggressively, and is always getting dinged up. I’d move him if it brought me a similarly big bat that can actually be in the lineup everyday.

The Sox need to stick with their talented young middle infield of Alexei Ramirez and Beckham. They are showing signs up becoming something special.

Kenny would be a fool not to give up Beckham in a deal to net Prince, as long as he isn’t selling the farm. That being said I’d HATE to see them grab Prince…I love him in the NL way more and sure don’t want him in my division! lol

If Olney types it, I automatically discount it. This guy is wrong more often than the weatherman and yet he continues to be hailed as an “insider.” Inside his mom’s basement is more like it.

Real “insiders” are very few and far between, and rarely spill their info, because they’ll get cut off. Olney and the others just try to piece together speculation and various hearsay they may get wind of in the ballparks from various personnel.

It’s funny how one day Prince Fielder is almost certainly going to be dealt, and the next day everyone is saying he’ll still be a Brewer on August 1st.

You know I was thinking about the Soria thing again. Wonder if Joba Chamberlin, Zach McCallister, David Adams, + 2 lower level prospects would do the deal. I know, I know Joba is over-rated, he sucks, and god knows what others want to say. Fact: His stuff is still there. Velocity has not dropped a bit, in fact that has improved this season. He is what 23,24 currently. It could just be as simple as him not being the right fit in New York. You know, it happens. Truth is, there is still a lot of potential upside there. Wonder if the Royals would consider a trade like this. 5 for 1 with Joba being the header. The Yanks then release Chan Ho Park or trade for a C + prospect elsewhere. Yanks don’t need bench help in my opinion. They are deep with quality rookies or players like Miranda and Thames. I don’t think Wiggington or others would be a huge upgrade. Forget Dunn and his price tag. I’m really liking the Yankee team as is, however I would just like to see one more bull pen arm like Soria to be the full time 8th inning guy.

I am Yank fan bro. These are all expendable parts for the Yanks. I don’t think commenters on here realize just how deep the Yanks farm is right now.

The Yankees need another bench bat, but not one that will cost much.

I dunno, with how easy it is to hold onto Soria for such a long time, I don’t see how the Royals are inclined to trade him. Who knows-they could actually be competing by 2014.

Why would the brewers even want Beckham? Where would they play him? We don’t need anything but a truckload of pitching for Fielder.

If you haven’t noticed, Rickie Weeks kinda sucks at 2B. They’ve discussed moving him to the OF in the past, perhaps that’s what they are thinking about. Don’t think the White Sox should give up Beckham, however, for a rental.

If you haven’t noticed…Rickie is not the problem with the brewers. He leads the league in leadoff hitters in HR’s and RBI’s. He is streaky, i’ll give ya that. However, it is the terrible pitching that is preventing this team from ever doing anything. I’ll deal with his strikeouts and low batting avg. for a leadoff hitter in exchange for someone who can pitch and isn’t 35 years old.

Tybud, don’t you think his defense at 2B is one reason (just one of many, yes), why the Brewers’ pitching stinks? 2B is a really important defensive position.

His defense this year hasn’t been great, but it was above average over the past two seasons while he was healthy. He’s just making a lot of errors on easy plays that he should make like he did when he was younger. I expect him to play around average D going forward.

Even with his defense as bad as it’s been so far in 2010, he is still in the top 5 2B in terms of WAR this season.

Are you kidding? Where did I say he sucks overall? He’s got a great bat for a 2B, even if he’s not walking or stealing as much as he has in the past. But he’s a defensive quagmire, we all know it. He’s NOT a good 2B. You know that, I know that, we all know that. In other words, he sucks at 2B.

It’s obvious you didn’t bother to read my comments. Saying someone sucks at defense is different from saying he sucks. If you actually read my comment, you would understand that. Nobody is arguing about his offensive skill, but there is ABSOLUTELY NOBODY that believes he is a good 2B. I reiterate, he sucks at 2B. He’s great offensively at a thin position, but real baseball isn’t fantasy baseball. Brutal would be an apt description for Rickie’s defense.

Weeks is 17th out of 24 over the last three years in UZR/150, with a minimum of 1500 innings. This year, he is 22nd out of 25 qualifying 2Bs.

He strikes out a lot, hits for power, and I’ll agree that he is a bad defensive 2B. He shouldn’t be leading off, but the Brewers don’t have anyone better to lead off. The problem with his defense is, but where are you going to move him? If he is bad at 2B, then he can’t play CF or SS. McGhee and Braun are entrenched at 3B and LF, that leaves 1B and RF. I don’t think his bat is good enough to be an above-average 1B, and RF….i dunno. I think the best solution is to get him to improve his defense at 2B as best he can.
