Red Sox Asked About Jim Edmonds

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 30, 2010 at 5:15pm CDT

The Red Sox asked the Brewers about Jim Edmonds, according to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy. Edmonds isn’t sure that he wants to be traded to a contender, but has received assurances from GM Doug Melvin that the club will present him with potential deals before completing anything.

The 40-year-old is hitting a robust .289/.353/.513 this season with eight homers. Edmonds makes $850K this year and becomes a free agent after the season, so his contract will not be an obstacle for any team. Boston also has interest in other outfielders, including Cody Ross.

I think this would be a good move, low cost in a trade ,good D ,decent bat, and already accepted a bench role, I like this a whole hell of a lot more than overpaying for someone like Ross, or giving the albatross known as Hermida more playing time

when you it that way, i kind of agree. hermida is been awful since returning from the dl and outfield defense wasnt all that good the last road trip.

Ya after just dogging it on that easy fly ball Wednesday, I kinda gave
up on him, atleast ellsbury should be back next week, he makes that
catch every time, I’m not worried about the outfield as much as the
        bullpen and pedroia’s foot

I wouldn’t be surprised if Ellsbury gets moved, either by tomorrow or in the winter. Other clubs have been trying to get him for 2 years and whatever happened between him and the Sox brass over his injury this year might’ve just helped to expediate a move.

He won’t be moved this year, winter though wouldn’t shock me at all, especially if they get a good young catcher or power hitting OF

In center now yes, he is 40, but in the corners he’s top notch still,
and he can’t be any worse than hermida or Patterson out there

Exactly where he would play here, no 40 year old should play centerlol if Cameron needs a rest ellsbury would move to CF, Edmonds/ hallin LF depending on matchup

You just aren’t going to have both cameron, ellsbury, drew and edmonds in the same roster. Something is going to happen,Cameron might REALLY need to get surgery NOW and is just being a good soldier.

I don’t like the move because I don’t see them going anywhere this year and why in the hell would you want a 41 year old OF next year if he is still signed?!?!!!!

I’d rather watch Nava or McD in LF/CF …..even Kalish.

hes only signed this year, and I think hes perfect cause hes cheap,
and can spell drew cameron and ellsbury, but i hear ya none the less,
you just cant give up with so many games left and the guys they have
commin back IMO, not saying blow up the farm for fielder, dunn etc
just patch a few holes with minor deals and see what happens.

As for cameron God hes been brutal lately, especially tonight watching
a hanging splitter for strike 3, ugh the guy is so obviously injured
though so i’ll give him a break for showing some balls, when alot of
guys would have cashed their checks and called it a season

I agree. The Cards should have signed him this winter. He doesn’t want a starting job and would have been a good mentor to Jay and Rasmus. As a bench player he has been really good and can play the outfield corners and first base, and for $400,000 (if they would have signed him for the minimum – which he wanted), who could beat that?

while the yankees pick up berkman( which now makes that a really good lineup period.not that before it wasnt but still.) THEO, franCOMA and company ask about jim edmonds. THEO should just start selling becuase the red sox are done, big payroll but not ONE big bat in it. I mean look at the really big payroll teams(yanks, phillies, detroit and more) all have that big bat while the red sox have good players dont get me wrong they miss that big guy. ~Manny was thta guy and he was never replaced perod.

Sox better replace that BIG BAT I agree. Instead of the rebuilding projects, get a player that puts runs on the board. The pitching/defense experiment is a joke. They can get runs here and there but never any consistency.

We have scored runs basically every game only to watch okajima delcarmen and ramirez piss it all away, pitching and defense experiment??Is It not the goal of EVERY team to have a good staff and solid D????

I think you are the clueless one here sir. I said the pitching and defense experiement has been a joke IE not effective, and you basically said the same thing. So Shaddup. Next, in the 23 games the Sox have played in July, they’ve scored 4 runs or fewer in 16 of those games. Not surprisingly, they’re 11-12 this month. That won’t get it done. So 2nd in MLB in runs and what does that have them? 3rd place. So either score more and replace the heep in the outfield or get better pitching (which again supports my statement about P & D). Next time, read carefully before you pop on on someone.

Have people forgot that the Red Sox had one of the top 3 offenses in baseball until recently. They don’t need to add a major bat they just need offensive role players and relief pitching. Besides adding a huge bat since Pedroia and Ellsbury are coming back soon and have Martinez back. Edmonds would be an upgrade over who they have to play in right field with JD Drew out. And for all the Red Sox fans worried about the Yankees getting Berkman, in case you didn’t realize he is having a really bad year and has been steadily declining since 2006. He is 34 with a chance for injuries and is going to take up a spot that many Yankee veterans are going to need for rest on certain days. He was terrible for the Astros this year and will probably a less than average player for the Yankees with all the great pitching in the AL East.

Did Theo Epstein bring back Dan Duquette as a consultant? This harks back to the Duquette era, when the Red Sox routinely overpaid for players years past their prime. We have minor league players that will out perform Jim Edmonds going forward, starting with Nava and McDonald, who may not have the power numbers of Edmonds, but whose defensive ranges have to be far superior.

    Reply
  19. Flharfh

Would be a good deal for both teams. Red Sox get effective outfield help for cheap, though Edmonds is to old to play every day. Brewers get a prospect in exchange for someone that probably won’t be on the team next year, and free up a spot for Lorenzo Cain to come up from AAA.

You want nothing more than 2 mediocre prospects in the bottom 20’s of their organizational list for Ells? That’s crazy. Think Freddie Freedman, Jonny Vetters and Arodys Vizcaino, 2 top ten prospects and a young quality left handed reliever.

Jacoby isn’t going anywhere this season with his trade value being at an all-time low and with the Red Sox having the chance of making the playoffs. They are 5 or 6 games out behind the Rays but it can be easily made up in two months. I do hope they trade him and Papelbon in the offseason and go after Cliff Lee and Carl Crawford which could conceivably happen with the Red Sox getting tired of the Yankees getting every free agent. I’m going to bet that they pull a Yankee and offer an extra year or an extra $10 million just to get these players over the Yankees.
