Tigers, White Sox, Padres Have Interest In Hawpe

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 29, 2010 at 9:34pm CDT

9:34pm: The Tigers are interested in Hawpe, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (via Twitter).

5:03pm: The Padres and White Sox have asked the Rockies about Brad Hawpe, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post (all Twitter links). Chicago’s interest hinges on the pursuit of Adam Dunn and the Padres’ interest may have softened, now that they have acquired Miguel Tejada.

Hawpe, who hit his seventh homer this afternoon, began the day with a .259/.337/.439 line. The 31-year-old has about $2.8MM remaining on his contract this year. The Rockies have a $10MM option for 2011 with a $500K buyout. If the Rockies trade Hawpe, he can void the option.

Hawpe would be a good acquisition for the White Sox. His stock is low now, so he wouldn’t require much in return. He’s a good hitter that can play the outfield and first to spell Paulie, but would mostly be used as a DH, pushing Mark Kotsay to hopefully the minors.

Really? Brad Hawpe? Aren’t we supposed to be trying to add someone BETTER than Kotsay/Andruw Jones?

old comment but how exactly does some no name bum hit for more HRs than a guy that has over 400 HRs?

Hawpe wouldn”t come cheap as he is a type A Free Agent but he will not require a load. An all star a year ago, he is starting to find his stroke. He would be a good trade for the chisox and the rox need a few prospects not a power hitting 1B/Of that isn’t consistent

He wouldn’t be offered arbitration so type wouldn’t matter. It looks more like a salary dump.

Yeesh…how much of an upgrade over Kotsay is this? Only 7 HR in Colorado? I like the Berkman idea better as Plan B.

I would be happy if we added Hawpe but not if it comes at a price of hudson, viciedo, flowers, danks or morel. If ur talking Jon Gilmore and Johnny Nunez im fine with it

Hawpe is better than his current numbers. He wouldn’t be brought in (to SD) to hit HR’s. The guy can hit for average if he wants to, and has a nice all-fields swing that would be perfect in Petco Park…

There aren’t a whole lot of outfielders left on the market. Hart, DeJesus, and Werth are all gone. Boston may look to trade once Jacoby is activated but I can’t really think of anyone that is a decent defender that the Padres could acquire. Angels are trying to dump Matsui and Rivera and the Padres have been mentioned in Jermaine Dye rumors, so considering the alternatives, Hawpe would not be a bad pick up.
