Dodgers Consider Options

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 27, 2010 at 10:24am CDT

FRIDAY, 10:24am: Manny is not asking for an extension, according to Rosenthal on Twitter.

THURSDAY, 9:17pm: The White Sox will know by Friday afternoon if they can or will get Ramirez, reports Mark Gonzalez of the Chicago Tribune.

7:55am: The Dodgers and White Sox have have discussed a potential Manny Ramirez trade, but according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, Los Angeles has spoken to at least one other team about the 38-year-old. The Rays and Rangers are interested in Ramirez, though the Dodgers are not fully committed to making a trade.

Ramirez wants a one-year extension to waive his no-trade clause, a source tells Rosenthal and Morosi. If he clears waivers, Ramirez could have the leverage to make such demands, but if a team claims him, the Dodgers would only be able to negotiate with that club. The White Sox intend to claim Ramirez, according to FOX, though that won’t necessarily happen.

Teams have until the end of the week to claim Ramirez, who hit waivers yesterday. If he’s claimed, the Dodgers will have until Tuesday afternoon to work out a deal. Click here to vote on whether a National League team wil claim Ramirez and here for more detail on trading in August.

I don’t know about that, but if he does I wouldn’t be completely surprised. I just don’t want to say it yet but I will say this, if he does want an extension, he isn’t going to waive his no-trade

Why would it scare them away? If they claim him he has no leverage to make that demand. The Sox just say “come here or stay in LA”. No other team can claim him once the Sox make the claim. If Ramirez doesn’t want to come unless he gets an extension, then he stays in LA.

I totally agree. If Manny pulls this stuff and demands an additional year, the Sox walk away. He will come to Chicago without the extension because its in his best interest to do so if he wants to play next year.
Having him trip and roll around the outfield the rest of this year can only lower the money he will make next year. Hes the very definition of a DH at this point in his career and he knows it. He comes to Chicago, hits like he can, and some AL team will give him a deal after this season.

Yeah, like that time he helped Boston win two World Series!

He’s not gonna destroy a team in one month. If anything, he has extra incentive to be great, because of his impending free agency.

I never said he was going to destroy any team. My point is that his actions to get whatever he wants always takes precedence over any of his teams needs. He did help Boston win two series, but he also hurt their chances when he decided that an extension was more important than getting to a third series. He’s been great for the Dodgers, but he’s looking for another extension, and doesn’t care what team pays it.

have any of the NL teams in competition been mentioned as looking into claiming him? Atlanta has a combo of Ankiel, Hinske, Diaz, and Cabrera in the OF with Heyward. With this being Bobby Cox’ farewell tour, and so much of Manny’s salary being deferred, why wouldn’t the Braves be in?

For that matter, the Reds and Cardinals also have questions in their outfield. The Padres do as well, but I can see financial issues being a deterrent for them.

Cards could use him, but they probably wouldn’t do it because they’d have to move Holliday from left field. I could see the Braves doing it, especially now that the Phillies have their regulars back (not that it’s helping them much, they’re losing to Houston again as I type). He hasn’t been nearly the clubhouse disaster with the Dodgers that the Red Sox would like us all to believe.

I could see the Reds taking him, he can’t be much worse defensively than Gomes and he gives them another solid hitter besides Votto. Baker managed Bonds and Kent, so he could handle Manny. I could definitely see the Padres taking a chance on him as well. They could claim him and trade a prospect to the Dodgers to get them to at least pay the deferred amount. Gives them a better offense going into the postseason.

I wouldn’t mind a “quitter” that was hitting nearly .300 with 20 homers, and is one of the huge reasons your team won two World Championships after decades of futility. Boston has a strange way of rewarding their players -Nomar, Damon, Pedro, and Manny were all vilified after they left.

Manny will end up in Atlanta, they wont give him an extension, but he will accept the trade because he knows it will give him a better chance to build his value for a contract in the off season than staying in LA would.

And I would definitely be content with a 1yr-$10 mil contract.

Very interesting to say the least. If there was an incentive (Based on AB) laden contract offer, he could play for a host of teams. The production is there when he is able stay on the field. If Boras/Manny would agree to that type of contract, even the Dodgers might be interested in an extension. My take is that will not happen, and he will end up as a DH somewhere for 8-10 mil somewhere in the AL in 2011 or retire.

I can’t understand why teams still want to put up with the Manny act. It made some sense when he was an irresistible force. Now that he’s hiding from his mortality by heading to the DL before slumps can take hold, how is it worth any gamble with your clubhouse?

That was my point exactly. He isn’t a clubhouse problem except in the version the media tells, working out its own resentments. The media almost always turns on players who stop cooperating with them, and in some cases, tries to wreck their careers or force them out of town.

A lot of blame goes on Boston, both the fans and FO. The fans made Manny’s and his kids life a living hell. Literally. Imagine not being able to bring your kids to a game because you have to worry about their well being. Then try to play baseball in the frame of mind. It is the FO’s fault for letting Manny get away with things. Look, he was their 160M prize and that usually gets you special treatment. But the FO let it get really bad while turning their check the other way.

Kemp is a different topic all together. I will point out these two things. One, his BABIP is 50 points lower than his career norm. If you even it out to his career norm, he has a 291/345/478 line. If you leave his BABIP alone and only focus on the less number of linedrives, you will also be shocked. As of about two weeks ago, Kemp’s LD percentage was down to a level compared to last year where he should have 15 more LDs. Because 80 percentage fall in, hed have 15 more hits and be hitting 297. So chill, he has simply been unlucky this year.

Poor Matt Kemp the General manager, then the old school third base coach called him out for lacksidasical play. It is hard on poor kemp to make a full effort out on the field. Another Mondesi in the making a million dollar talent, and a two cent brain. Of course he is distracted by Rhianna, but the Mick was distracted by the New York night life. Anyway put Kemp on waivers for a few cases of baseballs.LOL

Now you seem to love the fact that the coaches are calling him out. If you want that, why didn’t they call out Loney, who is hitting barely above 200 since the ASB, Andre, who is hitting in the 250 range since the pinkie injury, or Martin, who was hitting something like 230? Why? Because they decided they wanted to make a point by going after the most talented player on the team. Bullshit. Guys with 30-40 years of expierence calling out the next young star because he is the same player as last year, except he is having a statistically unlucky year. Hell, why hasn’t Bowa come out multiple times when his coaching decisions cost us games? Yea, everytime a guy is thrown out 1st to 3rd or 2nd to home, it is Bowa who sent him. Hell, what about the game a couple days ago when Manny was out by 10 feet and the replay showed Bowa not only didn’t give him a sign, but then nearly ran into him? Or how about when he sent Reed Johnson and he was out by 40 feet? The sad thing is there are many people like you who think he did the right thing.

Or claiming that he had a bad knee and not remembering which one it was when taken to the doctors for an MRI was contrived. Being called out by Pedroia,Youkilis and his boy, Big Papi for letting a pop fly fall in left field and then falling and rolling on it ,was made up by the mean Boston media. You should just say ‘I love Manny’ and leave it at that.

If we trade Manny, it is them saying ‘the season is done and we are going to let guys get ABs, possibly prospects’. Lets say the Dodgers win tomorrow and come within 4 games…. if they dont like what whatever team won the claim is offering, they could very well pull him back. This is a different team with Manny.

As for the trade, it will either be a prospect who isnt on the 40 man roster, or if it is a guy on the 40 man(for example, Dayan Viciedo from the Sox… not saying we will get him to the Sox fans who will read this and freak out, but the Dodgers need a 3B prospect and I believe there were rumors the Sox dangled him at the trade deadline for Manny), he would be a PTBNL and would be officially traded in the offseason, when he no longer needs to clear waivers
